I noticed the same thing, but couldn't really put it into words, very well done. As you said "settle" is very different from "settle down" and I think your point is spot on.

And this is why even the feminists who do manage to end up married don't lose any of their bitterness and anger, it's because they didn't end up with their first choice. They settled.

What an unreal level of entitlement, she's offended that you asked if it was important?! She's basically saying "EVERY PHONE CALL I MAKE IS IMPORTANT HOW DARE YOU!!" What an idiot. Then she segues into more rationalising about her orbiters, sure he's going to a lot of effort to travel and help you sell a car because he's your 'friend', what was that about? Dodged a bullet there. You should have replied with a skeptical face to make fun of her.
