Not because he's a terribly great opponent in any objective sense, but because of his skin color. If he rises too high it will be awfully tempting for the GOP to give him the nomination. I mean, just imagine the glowing PR the left wing press will give them...for a week or two.
I know people get my meaning so I won't genuflect with the "not in a racist way" nonsense. It's about moral signaling and the members of this forum recognize that.
Just adding that because I've realized I don't need to qualify myself a whole lot here. Which is great.

There are a lot of Republicans who like to signal how not racist and not sexist they are by pushing people like them. They bent over backwards with Michael Steele, for instance, who went on to be a total disaster. Their transparent pandering also didn't win them any votes or respect from the left, whose frame they slavishly buy into.

Their reasoning goes like this:
- Trump is anti-establishment - many voters are starved for an anti-establishment president
- this under-served need is why Trump has attracted HIS voters earlier than others
- mainstream voters are not as active yet, so the people who feel more comfortable with a mainstream candidate have not yet made up their mind about the nominees to the same degree as the anti-establishment voters
- as candidates start to drop out though, their supporters will rather go to one of the mainstream candidates
- say the nice doctor Ben Carson drops out, his voters would rather join Camp Bush than Camp Trump
- this is why Trump's lead will not hold - his poll numbers will stay high but stagnate as the numbers of his eventual biggest competitor (most probably Jeb) will come closer to his
- once he loses the big lead he currently has, it will be hard for him to keep up the "always winning" storyline which attracts a significant part of his voters
I still think he has a very good shot at the presidency, but the current numbers just don't mean that much - nobody becomes president before election day.

If you look at his rallies or footage of him campaigning, its him and a bunch of white people. They like him, and its not because they don't wanna be considered racist. They probably like trump too but they might be turned off by some of his rhetoric. There is a section of Conservative voters that are very G rated. These are the extremely polite, church going, soup kitchen volunteering types.
...
Trump still has the highest odds of winning though, Carson's supporter's second choice is still Trump.

YEP... these are all good points, and I think also that polls show that if Republicans were so short-sighted as to choose Trump as their candidate, then almost any Democratic runner would likely easily beat him (at least at this point in the unravelling of events and sentiments)...

Where are these polls that you speak of?
The ones I've seen have Trump besting both Hillary and old man Bernie head to head.
You've seen recent polls showing Trump easily losing to them?
Post them. I haven't seen them yet.

One poll that I was considering, when I wrote my post, was one done at the end of July, but I had NOT recalled that such poll was so old (about 6 weeks ago), and Hillary has been sliding since then.

There may be some more recent polls, let me look a little further.
I am NOT trying to be disingenuous here or in my earlier post, but I have a hard time believing that a bombastic and caustic person like Trump would really have any meaningful chance at winning the presidency. He has little to NO substance, except to make everything about him and his stupid ass reality shows - but NEVER say NEVER in this strange world in which we are living because one of the difficult things to predict is the future.

Quote:On Tuesday, talk radio host Glenn Beck accused the Tea Party supporters of GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump of being racists.
While he questioned whether Trump’s supporters are genuine Tea Partiers, Beck said of them, “If you were a Tea Party person, then you were lying. You were lying. It was about Barack Obama being black. It was about him being a Democrat.” Although he later identified fellow talk show host Sean Hannity as a Tea Party supporter who thinks Trump is “a great guy,” Beck said that he simply disagrees with Hannity about Trump.
Beck’s comments came as part of a discussion of Trump’s rally in Texas yesterday before a sold-out crowd of 20,000. Beck stated, “The media’s making this look like [Trump’s supporters are] Tea Party people. I don’t think these are Tea Party people who are following him. Some of them may be, but I think these — I mean, you can’t — if you were a Tea Party person, then you were lying. You were lying. It was about Barack Obama being black. It was about him being a Democrat, because this guy is offering you many of the same things, as shallow as the same way. If you said to me that it bothered you about his past, you said to me, ‘Hey, what about his relationship with Jeremiah Wright? What about what he’s done here, here, and here?’ You’re not bothered by this guy, and it’s exactly the same thing.”
Later, after discussing reports of The Blaze being left off the list of media outlets given passes for Trump’s rally in Dallas (although they were eventually allowed in), Beck said, “People will not even say that’s concerning. His supporters will not even say that’s concerning.” Beck noted that Trump makes him, rather than a booker, cold call Trump to get an interview with him, something which Beck says he refuses to do. Beck added, “I’ve seen this movie before. This is exactly what Barack Obama does.”
Beck also stated, “Well, we can’t figure out, there’s a lot of people that we know, that we just cannot figure out. They say they were for the Tea Party, I mean, you know, I’ve had an open conversation with Sean Hannity. He is — he swears he’s a great guy, and everything else. I just disagree with him, on that. Sarah Palin is another one, who had him on the show, and just fell all over him, and just loves him. I don’t understand that.”
Beck said that he did understand why people who didn’t want a politician were supporting Dr. Ben Carson.
“I cannot understand the Trump thing, and it scares the hell out of me,” Beck added. “If there’s anybody who would like the Greek columns, and the gold and the glitter, it’ll be Donald Trump.” He continued that Trump saying his name may be on the wall between the US and Mexico is “what a dictator says. I mean, remember, it was Leningrad, and then it was Stalingrad. That’s what dictators do. That’s what dictators do. And we are — if it’s not him, it will be someone else, that steps into that role, if we don’t stop this right now.”
He concluded, “This guy is just a TV star. That’s what’s happening. He’s a TV star, and people just want to win, and they’ll take anyone.”
