This is the Political Correctness versus Sanity election.
A woman VP would have undermined that.

I liked... the kindly black fellow whose name I have already forgotten.
But BLM is obviously out for blood and loot.
May as well have courted the muslim vote, for all the good it would have done.

As for the pick, just call him Inoffensive Pence.
He's not overtly PC, but he is more polite than Trump.
It's a re-balancing for what has been a fiery campaign.

I think two of the main reasons that Trump chose Pence was to A) Unify the party and B) He had the least baggage out of everyone he was considering.

When Reagan ran and won in 1980, many of the Republican establishment hated him and were saying and behaving similarly to the way they're behaving now against Trump. Reagan decided to choose Bush who was the establishment choice to unify the party. My guess is that Trump is doing the same thing here since there are quite a few Republicans who still haven't signed on to Trump. He needs them in order to win. This along with the events of the last night should more or less solve that problem.

From what I've heard and read, Pence doesn't have much in the way of baggage that the Democrats can take advantage of. As a few people have said here, a VP won't win you an election but they sure can lose you one. You want a boring, capable guy or gal to be VP so as to keep the focus on the guy who wants to be president. Pence seems perfect for this role and my guess is that Manafort convinced Trump of this. Plus, the VP doesn't normally do a whole lot during a presidential term anyway. Can anyone tell me what that asshole Biden has accomplished in 8 years of being VP? Exactly.

Now you have a seasoned, competent, boring establishment guy with a decent record in Indiana who wont take any attention from Trump. With Newt or Christie, they would have been undisciplined and difficult to manage due to their oversized egos. Plus they both have a shitload of baggage. Newt with his screwed up personal life and Christie with his mediocre record in NJ and his hugging Obama two weeks before the election. Bottom line is that Trump is running for president so Pence will come to Trump's views, not the other way around. Not the worst choice by any means, just a boring, uninteresting choice. Boring is good here.

There's a reason why the father's of Western thought actively discouraged this empty style of arguing. It just becomes a dick measuring contest and doesn't accomplish anything.

But hey, man, if you really want to be "right" and prove how "wound up" I am, have at it.

My points are very simple:

1) Trump vetted all the candidates extensively. He knows much more about them at this point than anyone outside of the campaign.

2) Trump is highly intelligent, has shown great judgment throughout the campaign and is being advised by Paul Manafort, an expert political strategist, as well as the rest of his highly competent inner circle.

3) The VP selection choice was an extremely dangerous landmine for Trump, and the biggest challenge in the campaign thus far. There was an enormous amount of thought and strategy behind the choice for this reason.

4) VPs historically never win campaigns, but they will lose it. Therefore a "safe" VP pick is the logical choice.

5) It is entirely possible (likely even) that Pence was not Trump's first choice. The vetting process might have turned up some skeletons in the preferred choice's past that Trump didn't want to deal with.

6) Trump would not have picked Pence if he did not firmly believe that Pence was either totally on board with his agenda or at the very least would be an effective asset for him.

7) The "best" VP choice is ultimately the one that contributes the most toward winning the election. Nothing else matters if Trump does not win. The most loyal, competent and ideologically pure running mate means jack shit if he's never sworn into office in the first place.

8) All of these things considered, there is a reason that Trump decided to choose Pence. He did not do so on a lark. This was a deeply considered and strategic decision. If you support Trump and believe in his executive ability, then you must understand that a decision which at first glance may seem wrong to you might actually be the right one. This is especially true in situations like this where Trump has access to much more detailed information on the potential VPs than you or me or anyone on the outside.

Please consider these points, none of which are corny, empty rhetoric, dick measuring or smoke being blown up your ass.

The fact Pence supported Cruz is actually a good thing, it shows Trump is willing to reach to the other side of Republicans and he isn't ignoring them.

Now, when Ted Cruz endorses Trump at the Republican Convention in 5 days, it will sound like a believable endorsement (UNLIKE BERNIE) because Trump has Pence on the ticket, who is socially conservative and previously endorsed Cruz during the primaries.

If you ask me, Trump is doing the right things to get Cruz voters without actually placing Cruz on the VP slot. Cruz voters will be essential in Ohio, Missouri, and Utah.

Trump already has tight game with independents, so he needs to make sure there is no Republican backstab revolt that could fuck him over in traditionally Republican states. Plus Ohio and Missouri are very nice to have.

I was talking about the portion in bold, hence why I put it in bold.

I'm done with the discussion at this point. Pence is the pick. Let's move on.

OK, I'm on board with Pence. I know next to nothing about him to be honest though, except he is against all of the Donald's proposals like building a wall, and banning muslims from entering the country. And he is for TPP. Basically, he is the anti Trump.

How much do you wanna bet he's going to make a public statement in favor of a wall, banning Muslims, and creating new trade deals soon?

I think this is highly probable.

For the record, I think this is an excellent pick when you take into account demographics and the fact that Pence shores up the establishment/evangelical vote.

Samseau, stuff like this is what makes you the man. I have to admit I didn't reason it through like that and it sounds right. And indeed let's trust the man that has single-handedly nuked the entire power structure.

I like the Pence pick.

The VP choice isn't for the people who are already in for Trump (like the majority of us here). It's to shore up support elsewhere.

Plus Pence seems pretty safe.

There are still some #NeverTrump tards over at Red State who manage to find the shit lining in everything, and probably will until the bitter end, but so far response seems to be all right to the Pence pick.

28 pages linking the Saudis to 911 are out, vindicating Trump.

Thread worthy.

Agree with others on Pence. Not sexy, but Trump doesn't need sexy now. He needs 1) Midwestern votes 2) articulate (can defend policy) and 3) 'safe' for #NeverTrumpers.

Thread worthy.

There are volumes about how the Sauds 'exported' and bankrolled their radicals (esp OBL) in order to preserve their monarchy...knowing they would terrorize the West. Vast majority of 9/11 attackers were Saudis.

Agreed, worthy of a thread, if one doesnt already exist.

I got an email with a Trump/Pence logo that had the "T" going through the hole in the "P". Looked purposely gay if I had to describe it.

Is that the "controversial" logo?

Did anyone notice that Trump's body language and everything wasn't great? There was a reluctance there.

Pence seems happy as a clam but Trump seems wishy washy towards Pence. Thoughts?
