Not saying it CAN'T be done, just that it hasn't. I'll get on the horn to NASA and we'll settle this

The globe rotates at nearly 1000 mile/hour at the equator. Clouds move between 10 to 100 times slower, roughly. It would be like watching someone move inside the isle of a high-speed train streaking by.

RE: The Flat Earth Society - still going strong!
Thanks Merc,

My next question is this, pulled more accurately from this article:

Quote:Today I found out about a man who fairly accurately estimated the circumference of the Earth well over 2,000 years ago: Eratosthenes of Cyrene.

Born around 276 B.C. in Cyrene, Libya, Eratosthenes soon became one of the most famous mathematicians of his time. He is best known for making the first recorded measurement of the Earth’s circumference, which was also remarkably accurate. (And, yes, people at that point had known for some time that the world wasn’t flat, contrary to popular belief.)

Eratosthenes was able to accomplish this in part because of his education in Athens. There, he became known for his achievements in many different fields, including poetry, astronomy, and scientific writing. His activities became so talked about, in fact, that Ptolemy III of Egypt decided to invite him to Alexandria to tutor his son. Later, he would become the head librarian of the Library of Alexandria.

The mathematician must have been thrilled to have this opportunity. The Library of Alexandria was a hub of learning at the time, attracting scholars from across the known world. Eratosthenes was able to rub shoulders with the likes of Archimedes while continuing his own learning.

It was probably in the Library of Alexandria that he read about a curious event that took place in Syene (now Aswan, Egypt) at the summer solstice. Syene sat to the south of Alexandria. At high noon, the sun would shine directly overhead and there would be no shadows stemming from the columns. However, Eratosthenes realized that at the same moment in Alexandria, columns clearly did have shadows. Being a good mathematician, he decided to use this knowledge to do a few calculations to figure out the circumference of the Earth.

To do this, Eratosthenes measured the shadow of an obelisk on June 21 at noon. He discovered that the sun was about 7°14’ from being directly overhead. He realized that, because the Earth is curved, the greater the curve, the longer the shadows would be.

Based on his observations, he hypothesized that Syene must lie 7°14’ along a curve from Alexandria. Furthermore, he knew that a circle contained 360°, which meant that his calculation—7°14’—was roughly one fiftieth of a circle. Therefore, Eratosthenes thought, if he multiplied the distance between Syene and Alexandria by 50, he would have the circumference of the Earth.

The missing information was simply how far away Syene was from Alexandria. He measured the distance in stadia. There isn’t an exact modern day conversion to stadia, and it isn’t perfectly clear which version of the stadia Eratosthenes was using, but regardless, from what is known, his estimation was remarkably accurate.

There are two theories as to how Eratosthenes figured out the distance: first, that he hired a man to walk there and count the steps. Second, that he heard a camel could travel 100 stadia a day, and it took a camel about 50 days to travel to Syene. Whatever the case, he estimated the distance between Syene and Alexandria was 5,000 stadia. If that was the case, then using his formula, the earth was 250,000 stadia around.

Due to the uncertain distance that stadia represents (and particularly which stadia he was using), historians believe that Eratosthenes’ conclusion was between .5% and 17% off the mark. Even if the latter case was true, it was astoundingly accurate given the limited technology he was dealing with at the time. But many scholars think it likely that he was using the Egyptian stadia (157.5 m), being in Egypt at the time. This would make his estimate only about 1% too small.
http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/...tosthenes/

As we all know C=2 pi r.

How was Eratosthenes able to determine the circumference of the Earth using shadows and the angle of the sun if the planet is truly flat?

How do any of us know Eratosthenes was correct ?
They tell us that's the circumference...but I haven't walked, flown or navigated the whole earth with a personal Odometer so I can't be sure.
For distances between cities and countries his theory might work....but for the entire planet ? How can you and I check this without going into outer space ?

In any case, here are some ideas about the shape of the earth related to the movement of the sun and the shadows it creates:

Under a flat earth model the sun moves in a kind of circle above the earth within the dome firmament.

However some people think that the rising and falling of the sun and the movement of shadows would mean that the earth isn't totally flat...meaning there is some curvature, so other people put forth the model of a kind of mound. Like the top part of a ball.

Other people have tried to theorise that the earth is actually concave.

Thing is I don't know if the earth is really flat or not.
What I do know for sure, is that what they show us of the globe from space all looks fake and doesn't tally with what they tell us is up there, nor does it match with what you see when you look up at the sky in the day or night time.

Read the North Korea Thread - Mercenary is not only insisting Earth is flat (or concave or whatever just not round) - he also insists North Korea is the Good guys and a hidden paradise.

So I have a new theory - Mercenary is a NK patriot who believes North Korea is the center of the Earth with Etrnal leaders birthplace in the very center - so Earth must be flat Big GrinBig GrinBig Grin

Flat Earthers can't explain this.

They don't explain it. They deny it. They claim noone ever takes the Santiago/Sydney flight. They dismiss all tweets, selfies and Facebook posts from people actually on and taking the flight.

I notice all the things the Flat Earthers dismiss, are things that would take a minimum of $10,000 and some time and aggravation to prove to yourself... and then the flat earthers would still discount it. They have no objective standard of truth.

These two pet theories are way too strange frankly.

My statements about the globalists are based on their own accounts and on books and commissions - books written by CFR historians, Stanford historians, congressional commissions and by observations of daily life that confirms it all.

Why do masons always draw the pillars with the sun and moon in the same size with the big G on top ?

I don't trust astronauts I believe they are all initiated actors. Just go watch the bloopers and inconsistencies its ridiculous. Armstrong says the sky was pitch black in space, the others say it was a light show. Zero consistency from Nasa always flip-flopping. The deception of the Appolo missions is nothing but homage to their pagan (satan) gods which they also named the planets after. Flat or round, there is a lot of misinformation and fakery about space. How do you get past the Van Allen belt ?? You just don't in my opinion.

What do you guys make of Airy's failure experiment to test if the earth is moving?

Lol, what bullcrap

Light does not slow down in water, instead what happens is that upon changing mediums light gets reflected in different angle from surface, this happens precisely so that light would not have to slow down so it changes angle to proceed trough medium with maximum possible speed.

This is high schol physics - so many guys have missed class and now believe this bullshit.

You are right I dont have the science background. I am approaching this topic with an open mind from a metaphysical point of view. Here is what happens when I google "does light slow down in water"

First result: Does the speed of light change in air or water? Yes. Light is slowed down in transparent media such as air, water and glass. The ratio by which it is slowed is called the refractive index of the medium and is usually greater than one."

Light does not slow down. It just spends more time in the medium. The speed of light doesn't change - but because of light spends time bouncing off (popularly speaking) atoms of the medium it doesn't travel in as straight a path in a medium as in vacuum and so it spends more time in the medium and it's path becomes distorted, by a certain angle. The angle is such that light would have to spend the smallest time possible in the medium. This is why images trough water look distorted. Images are also distorted by air because it is also a medium and not vacuum. You would have to align the telescope even with no earth movement because air distorts light my some small amount. Every time light enters one object and exits other on the surface between them the picture gets distorted - sometimes even masses of cold and hot air function as different objects for light to break angle between - that is behind phenomena of mirages and similar stuff.

You can observe water breaking light and distorting images at any glass of water or your own bathtub.

You don't have to have a scientific background to know this - it's high school level knowledge.

In religion - you pray and then nothing happens.

In science - you do things properly and great things happen from flight to curing of illnesses. Or horrible things. Doesn't matter good or bad - but there is certainly cause and effect.

Yes because everyone has memorized their physics book right?

"Speed of Light May Not Be Constant, Physicists Say. Einstein's theory of special relativity sets of the speed of light, 186,000 miles per second (300 million meters per second). But some scientists are exploring the possibility that this cosmic speed limit changes. The speed of light is constant, or so textbooks say.Apr 27, 2013

"Scientists have long known that the speed of light can be slowed slightly as it travels through materials such as water or glass. However, it has generally been thought impossible for particles of light, known as photons, to be slowed as they travel through free space, unimpeded by interactions with any materials."Jan 23, 2015

"Slow light is the propagation of an optical pulse or other modulation of an optical carrier at a very low group velocity. Slow light occurs when a propagating pulse is substantially slowed down by the interaction with the medium in which the propagation takes place."

On speed of light in water:"As an approximation, it is about 3/4 of its speed in a vacuum, or 225,000,000 meters per second. As Dipen said, you'd really need to know the index of refraction which depends on its temperature, etc. The index of refraction of water is about 1.33, so the speed of light in water is (c/1.33) = 2.25E8 m/s."

To me it looks your high school knowledge needs to be updated and science hasn't settled on the matter.

Ironically there is a list of major contributors to science, covering everything from mathematics to antiseptic surgery, who happened to be religious specifically bible adhering Christians. The number of groundbreaking scientists who believed in a higher power would be too long to list here.

I will just leave you with the tombstone from father of modern rocket science and Nasa chief architect:

Try abstaining for 30 to 90 days from the most powerful addiction you have without any external help or medication (Examples: unhealthy foods, sugar, smoking, alchohol, sex, porn & mastubation) and then tell me how far you get.

After failing, try conquering it again with the help of prayer and religion. Any established religion.

Report back when you finally manage to hold out for 30 to 90 days, and then tell me again "You pray and then nothing happens."

I've abstained from nearly all of those for that amount of time or longer, at one point or another, some permanently- and doing so involved zero medication or prayer. Millions do the same. Dozens of men in the wagon thread here alone.

Of course prayer and other forms meditation can often be helpful to some people in some ways, but it doesn't make flight possible or eliminate lyme disease.
