Alvarez/Liam Smith has been agreed to for September 17, probably in Las Vegas, although no official announcement has been made as to the venue or even the city. Black Sabbath is playing the M.G.M. Grand on that date, so the fight won't be there. T-Mobile Arena is likely and Mandalay Bay is possible, if not already booked. As soon as the venue is announced, I will book my flight and hotel, as long as the fight is in Las Vegas. Smith isn't bad, but he doesn't move his head or his feet, so Alvarez won't have too much trouble catching him with some hard shots. Odds on a straight bet will be ridiculous in favor of Alvarez, but I'm thinking I can make some money on the Alvarez by knockout prop, if they even allow it.

Edit: Some idiot just put on Box Rec that the fight will be at the M.G.M. Grand. No. Black Sabbath is playing there that night.

watching shawn porter workout videos... it's pretty funny how his approach to training with his father is super scientific but once he gets into the ring everything just falls apart and he relies on pure strength and conditioning to win fights (0% skill). he's up there with tyson fury for having the ugliest style in the game right now - but who am i to say anything since they're both winning.

i've never been impressed by keith thurman. he's a great athlete but there seems to be something missing from him. he's explosive and awkward, but doesn't have A level skill, razor sharp reflexes, or killer instinct for me to jump on the bandwagon.

what do you guys think about the fight tomorrow? i think we'll see what we always see with shawn porter. he'll be in tip top shape but will fight ugly and wild as shit smothering his punches. i see keith pot shotting him for a couple of rounds while also getting tagged a bit due to the amount of punches shawn is gonna throw. if keith catches him clean i don't think porter will be able to take a good shot, but thurman's conditioning has never been stellar either. 50/50 fight. i'm thinking thurman just due to his better skills.

i don't see any of the welterweights in this class filling the void with floyd and manny gone. none of them have that X factor or super star quality about them.

50/50 fight. Thurman by decision is the most likely result, but I wouldn't be surprised by any result. Both guys have knockout power and Thurman's chin and defense have yet to be really tested. Overall, Thurman gets a slight edge due to his power, accuracy, and output. It's fights like these that I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. No smart bet in this one.

They keep building up Thurman, but i've never seen him look truly impressive. Porter has looked impressive - and he can also look terrible! A lot of this fight is going to depend on which Porter shows up. By the way, this is the first prime time fight on CBS since Ali fought Leon Spinks...in 1978! How many of you lads were born in 1978?

thurman needs to spend a lot of time on the double end bag. fluidity, mental quickness, and reflexes would set him apart.

I thought both guys fought really well, but there are definitely things that Thurman needs to work on. It was one of those fights that people would be unhappy with any decision, including a draw.

Golovkin/Kell Brook, September 10 at the O2 in London. I didn't see that one coming at all.

Thats a tough fight for GGG. I can't wait for Sept 10.

I'm thinking Brook will become a good boy around round 8. Golovkin will have much more trouble catching him than he has had with most of his opponents. I see an Alvarez/Khan type result.

Are you being serious? GGG runs through real MW's and probably most Super MW's. Brook isn't even a Super WW or Junior Middleweight. He is going from 147 to 160 that is a big jump. No way this fight goes the distance. It ends between 6-8 rounds at the most.

Ray Leonard was a welterweight who gave a fearsome middleweight, Marvin Hagler, a very tough fight, and walked away with the decision. Ray Robinson stepped up from welter and dominated for a decade and a half. Generally, weight matters a lot, but often talent counts more. Don't compare this to the horrific weight mismatches we've seen recently - Canelo-Khan, Mayweather vs. Marquez, etc. Khan has a glass jaw at junior welterweight; of course Canelo would knock him out. And Marquez has the worst style to defeat Mayweather; a counter-puncher can't beat Mayweather. A TALENTED welter with the right style can be legitimately competitive against a middleweight, if the styles match up. Brook has skills. I can't say how talented he truly is yet because he hasn't been tested. But if Brook is the real deal, he may end GGG's KO streak. Could even take a decision. GGG deserves credit for taking this fight and not just waiting a year to cash in on a Canelo fight. Also makes Canelo, who ducked Brook, look like a wimp.

I saw an interesting documentary about Sergey Kovalev. The guy killed someone in the ring in Russia, and will have his next fight in the same arena. Yahoo Sports interviewed him and his entourage about it :

Kovalev is one of the most exciting fighter right now (with GGG and Canelo), and I look forward to his fight against Ward.
The Father 路 2016-07-11 22:54:00 路 #1115
Strong showing by Kovalev. Yes, he got hit too often with the jab, and got taken the distance, but Chilemba is a skilled opponent who never has been knocked out. Most importantly, going 12 rounds against a skilled boxer will be EXCELLENT prep for an Andre Ward fight. Ward hasn't looked good in his two comeback fights after sitting out all those years (his prime?) in a contract dispute. If he looks slow again in his Aug 6 tune-up, I think Kovalev becomes the favorite in that fight.

I somehow forgot the Kovalev fight was even happening. I will consider going to T-Mobile to see Ward/Kovalev. If I go, I definitely won't bet. That fight is the toss-up of all toss-ups, even more so than Thurman/Porter. I'm thinking ringside seats for Alvarez/Smith will be cheap and really available.

I wouldn't put my money against Ward. At that elite level, the smarter fighter usually wins.

I wouldn't put my money against either of those guys. They're both too good. As things presently are and after seeing Kovalev's last fight, I'm giving a very slight advantage to Ward, but I still think it's a toss-up.

As for Golovkin/Brook, there are only two ways I could see Brook winning. The first is that Brook holds him for twelve rounds, is somehow able to finish out the fight, and gets the edge on the scorecards. The problem with that scenario is that Brook's punch output isn't that great and he is not a sharpshooter like guys like Mayweather and Alvarez are, so he would be lucky to land 150 punches in twelve rounds, actually extremely lucky. The second way that I see Brook possibly winning, and this really concerns me, because I plan on placing a bet, is that if you notice, sometimes Golovkin gets caught up in the heat of the moment and keeps hitting a guy after some part of his body touches the canvas. I'm concerned, especially with him fighting in Brook's home country, that he could do that and get himself disqualified. Roy Jones did that in his prime and Golovkin could also possibly do it. In any event, Golovkin by middle or late round stoppage is by far the most likely result.

I booked a ten day trip to Las Vegas for September. This will allow me to bet on Golovkin/Brook, Alvarez/Smith, and maybe make a smaller straight bet on Jacobs/Mora. I'm thinking Golovkin by knockout will be a good deal if they even allow it and the under rounds will also be good as long as they are set at 9 1/2 rounds or more. Brook's holding, toughness, and elusiveness may keep him in the fight for longer than many people think. The fight will be on regular HBO, so I can watch it at the LVH, and possibly the Wynn and places like Hooters and Blondie's. Alvarez will be on pay per view, so I will try to catch it at Blondie's, a movie theater, or wherever they are showing it. Smith is better than many people think, but he doesn't move his head or feet enough and it shouldn't be too hard for Alvarez to counter Smith's wide punches. The Alvarez by knockout prop should be offered and it will probably be a good deal. What do you guys, especially those from the U.K., think?

Does anyone know anything about these rumors that Golovkin is really sick and Saturday's fight might be called off? If he really is sick then I don't understand why he is so prone to getting sick right before fights. I just checked downstairs and apparently there was some heavy money bet on Brook today, making the odds a little closer. As far as props, one place has the over/under at 7 1/2 rounds with basically even odds and another place has them set at 9 1/2 rounds with the under being -195. I think the 9 1/2 is a good deal.

I've seen Eddie Hearn saying that Golovkin looked pretty drawn. Brook deserves serious respect for taking this. He's a pretty big welterweight, with good power that should carry up. Everything I've read has brook walking around at about 180lbs, whereas Golovkin walks around at the weight outside the ring. That said, I think Brook will do well for the first few rounds, but he's not slick enough to avoid getting tagged, and that'll pretty quickly add up. I think Brook will be out of there by the middle-to-late-middle rounds. How do you see it Merenguero? You betting on this one?

Golovkin in nine or less, with the fight being very competitive. I'll put something on Golovkin and something on the under rounds, especially since I found a place that has them set at 9 1/2 rounds. 7 1/2 would be too risky. 9 1/2 gives Golovkin until half way through the tenth round to get him out of there.
