RE: Official Boxing Thread for Videos, History, Interviews, Analysis, etc.
The fight that I'm really tempted to go bet on is the Daniel Jacobs/Jarrod Fletcher fight. Jacobs winning by knockout is very likely. When I was in Las Vegas a few days ago, this fight was the only one of the three title fights on the August 9 Barclays card that you could bet on. The Danny Garcia/Rod Salka odds would be off the charts and they should be posting odds on the Lamont Peterson fight very soon, if they haven't already. Odds on Jacobs ranged from about -500 to about -650 in favor of Jacobs. If they allow a proposition bet for the over/under rounds, it may be a smart choice to bet the under rounds. Because the fight is not in Las Vegas, no MGM Grand sportsbooks will allow any proposition bets. The other sportsbooks may or may not allow bets on the over/under rounds, but I am thinking that they will, because this was the only fight on that card which had any odds posted when I was there. They seem more interested in this fight than the others. If they allow such a bet, the odds will not be posted until the day before the fight. Fletcher isn't a bum, but I can't see him going the distance with Jacobs. Fletcher was knocked out before, but it was by Billy Joe Saunders and I believe the stoppage was premature. Saunders would have knocked him out at some point, but I can't really say that he was unable to defend himself at the time the fight was waived off.

Garcia/Salka isn't much of a fight...more like an execution and an easy win for Garcia after his last (close) fight...still, tickets were cheap and I'll be there ringside. Boxing is a weird sport to watch live...if you can't be in the first 10 rows, its better to watch it on TV. It's not like football or hockey or baseball where the field of play is huge. You're talking about two (often little) guys in a 15 foot ring ...there's not that much to see from 20 rows back, let alone the third deck! But if you can be close, even a blowout like the Salka fight is fun. Sometimes you can see a guys eyes roll back into his head after a shot, and that's not something you see every day. At least I don't; I don't know where you folks live! :/

I used to say, "If I'm not in the first five rows, I don't want to be there." The last two events I went to (both very recently), I was in the very first row. I think anything else is a step down at this point.

What do you think about Jacobs/Fletcher? There is little information online about that fight and what little information there is seems to predict a Jacobs knockout. Last week's bet was really a slam dunk. I have a feeling I'll be sweating a lot more if I bet on Jacobs and make a separate bet on the under rounds.

Funny, I had the opposite experience: I sat in the 2nd row at a big card and said "I want to be in the first row". But recently, I've sat in the 1st, 2nd, and 5th rows at recent cards and concluded there isn't that much difference. I even turned around to see how far back i could be and still be happy...I think 8-9 rows. Beyong that, you can't see. If helps if the floor is slightly pitched, like section 5 at MSG.

What DOES make a difference, I've found, is to not spend so much time with my camera trying to get the perfect shot and just enjoy BEING there. This is especially true with big punchers like Golovkin, Kovalev, etc who can end the fight with one punch...just relax and take it all in; you don't need the pictures to remind you you were there.

Don't have strong views on Jacobs/Fletcher. Don't like either one. Jacobs looked second-rate against Dmitry Pirog, who promptly fell off the face of the earth, and Fletcher got stopped by a light puncher in 2 rounds. The only way these two guys could be in an interesting fight is if they BOTH fought Golovkin, at the same time, in a 2-on-1 fight. Neither Jacobs nor Fletcher would be allowed to hit each other - only Golovkin. You could bet the over/under that he takes out BOTH guys in 4 rounds!

GGG actually sparred Shane Mosley in 2013 and Mosley said GGG hits like a light heavyweight

Interesting. I didn't know that. I'm a huge fan of GGG, and Sergei Kovalev, and I sometimes wonder what it would be like if GGG moved to Light Heavyweight to fight Kovalev! Somebody would be going down. And they'd get paid $$$. Still, I'm not sure I'd recommend that to GGG - one fight against a much bigger guy can age a 30-something fighter and ruin your body - just look at how Sergio Martinez declined after the JC Chavez Jr. fight.

^yeah the sparring match is actually on youtube. he also sparred chavez jr but both fighters didn't look like they were going 100% and i'm sure in both matches they were probably wearing the 20 oz winning sparring gloves... so pretty much fighting with pillows on their hands.

I know some of you guys are talking about attending boxing matches.

But man Kovalev just got a tko in the second. I know there are other fights but reminds me of some comedian's joke about Tyson. Guy is making his way to his seat, excuse me, pardon me, sorry and as soon as he sits down, it's over.

I saw the Klitschko Lewis fight in LA. Thank god it went long enough for me to watch a few rounds to get my money's worth.

Edit: Fuck Hopkins is almost 50 and going to fight Kovalev next? Damn...no excuses for not staying in shape. LOL, Hopkins just called himself an alien.

I just placed a pretty heavy bet on Jacobs. The odds are now horrible and there are no bets on the over/under rounds. I don't think any sportsbooks are taking bets on the Garcia or Peterson fights.

Good luck! Jacobs beat cancer so I guess he can beat Fletcher. I'm rooting for him just because of the cancer angle (I know, I'm a pussy, what can I say). I'll actually be there, ringside. Tix were cheap despite having Garcia on the card (because the competition is so weak). I'd much rather spend $300 to sit in the first couple of rows and see a great fighter win easily than spend $1,500 to sit in the middle of the MGM Grand to watch Floyd win easily in an over-hyped mismatch like the Canelo fight. But that's just me.

I see Rigo's career going the route of Winky Wrights' (to a lesser extent Andre Ward/Goosen)

Supremely skilled fighter that no one really wants a piece of...

Inactivity killed the 2nd half of Winky's career and Bob Arum was ATTEMPTING the same "freeze out" shit on Rigo

Very telling that Donaire didn't ask for a rematch, and he "returned to form" only after getting the Rigo treatment

I finally saw the fights from Saturday last night. Three obvious mismatches, especially the Garcia fight. I made less money on the Jacobs fight than I did on the last Golovkin fight, but I still did okay on Jacobs. I'm considering flying in for the Mayweather fight and placing both a straight bet on Mayweather and a proposition bet on the over rounds. Does anyone have any thoughts on that fight? Surprisingly, a lot of flights and hotel rooms are still available.

Great win for Kell Brook last night, fight with Amir Khan on the cards, British boxing is on the up. Quite a few names getting up there and winning world titles.

I thought Brook won pretty convincingly. His style is effective, athough I don't see him winning over many U.S. fans with that constant clinching. He should be able to beat Khan and any other European welterweight.

Golovkin is likely fighting Marco Antonio Rubio in Southern California in October. Although Golovkin should stop him, I see Rubio hanging around for at least a few rounds. The guy can take a punch better than possibly anyone in the sport. Kelly Pavlik and David Lemieux, both hard punchers, hit him with their hardest shots over and over again and Rubio kept coming back. If they allow a bet that the fight doesn't go 11 1/2 rounds, I will take it in a heartbeat. If the bet is for under 8 1/2 rounds or something, I may have to think about it a little bit.

He totally gets Rubio out of their in less than 8 rounds. The guy is 34 now - and its a ring-worn 34. The last good fighter he fought was Chavez Jr in 2012. Pavlik took him out...in 2009. And Pavlik doesn't hit like Golovkin. Also, Golovkin is a very aggressive fighter who seeks the KO even though he can outbox all the guys he faces; he KNOWS that his ticket to large PPV paydays are through his consecutive knockout streak. I expect he'll bounce Rubio around the ring for 5-6 rounds and Rubio's corner will stop it. Biggest risk to Golovkin is that he cracks a knuckle.

He made Porter look amateurish, the way Julio Diaz did. Still I thought Porter might be too strong for Brooks, but Brooks proved himself to be pretty tough. Would love to see him fight Khan, or even JMM. Then we'll know how good he is.

I agree with you that Pavlik didn't hit like Golovkin. Pavlik was more like an Alvarez type in that his power wore guys down rather than floor them with one punch. Lemieux, on the other hand, does have close to as much power as Golovkin and Rubio was able to withstand the attack and eventually stop Lemieux. Although Lemieux has power, he also lacks defense and a chin, both of which Golovkin has. I realize that Rubio's skills have probably deteriorated somewhat since the Lemieux fight. If they let me place an under rounds bet on the Geale fight, they should let me do the same for the Rubio fight if it happens. It will just have to be at a non-MGM Grand sportsbook.

Brook doesn't normally fight like that (as in, holding a lot). Watch the two Carson Jones fights for example.

Ironically, a lot of boxers (Euro and U.S) will have seen the effectiveness of the clinch from American fighters like Ward & Hopkins. Not sure why you specified that he could beat "any other European welterweight", as Brook beats Thurman and Alexander too in my opinion. Marquez also, provided he gets off the PEDs!
