You don't have to be out betting all the time. But every once in awhile something pops up and you go for it.
You can bet on anything here in the UK - personally I think politics is one of the easier fields to bet on. But is annoying since you can mostly only bet every 4 years or so.
I agree. Everyone in the history of boxing who has ever bet on Mayweather, Rocky Marciano, Joe Calzaghe, or Andre Ward has made money. Those guys have never lost. There is no reason to get overanxious. I understand that as well as anyone. If I didn't, I would be flying to Las Vegas every weekend to bet on something. I only bet on the fights that I am really sure about. Betting on Obama to win the election would have been a really safe bet. I didn't think about it at the time.

It is interesting here in the UK. Some of the major soccer teams (such as Man United) are floated on the stock market.
It would be an interesting graph to see which makes more money.
Bet on Man Utd to win each week.
Or spend the same amount of money on just buying stocks in the club.
There should be a link between the results on the pitch and the share price. And I am curious to see if that link is better expressed in the share price - or just by betting on matches.
Anyway - that reminds me. For you Man Utd fans - here is Jim Cramer discussing whether or not to buy shares in the club.
RE: Official Boxing Thread for Videos, History, Interviews, Analysis, etc.
I snuck into a Mike Tyson fight once at the MGM in Las Vegas.
The morning of the fight, I was walking through the casino. I saw a sign that said "Employee Laundry".
I went down some stairs and found myself in a laundry room. There was an armed guard.
I told me friend that when I distracted the guard, I wanted him to grab 2 MGM "uniforms" and casually walk away.
I went up and talked to the guard, I was sure to block his "line of sight" towards my freind.
Hours later, we put the uniforms on and walked to the front gate of the boxing arena. We grabbed a table from each end and starting walking towards the VIP entrance.
2 police officers opened the gate for us and told people to get out of the way!
We went to the bathroom and took our "uniforms" off and threw them in the garbage. We had suits on underneath. We found two open seats in the upper level.

Yeah I made approx. 300% gain off S&P puts that week.
Don't wanna de-rail, but next budget/debt "crisis" that rolls around, or any potential situations for shenanigans like the government shut down, the volatility will create some nice opportunities.

Mayweather is in South Africa to "resuscitate boxing" there. First time ever in Africa. Gave a press conference. Will announce his next opponent within the next week.
Quote:FLOYD "Prettyboy" or "Money" Mayweather Jnr is in South Africa, but the American global megastar boxing champion does not know why he is in the country.
That emanated from his response when asked during a press conference a few hours after touching down OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday afternoon.
Speaking freely at the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee’s (Sascoc’s) offices in a relaxed mood, shrugging his shoulders, something he does with ease and guile to avoid punches inside the ring, Mayweather, said: "I really don’t know. I’m just happy to be here. I just hope for the best. This has been one of my dreams to come back to the motherland. It has taken me 36 years, but I am here."
Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula, who is behind Mayweather’s visit, said the multiple world champion, who has won eight titles across five weight divisions, was in the country to spearhead the "Reawakening the Giant" boxing project — an initiative that was launched during the Sports Indaba last year.
"He is the idol who cuts across all barriers and represents the very best example of overcoming the odds to achieve greatness. Boxing is ingrained in sports legacy, but it needs to be nurtured and made strong again. As the best fighter on the planet, Mayweather can shine a light on us and inspire the youth to achieve excellence. The spinoffs of his visit will be felt long after he departs," said Mbalula. "His visit to South Africa is priceless."
Mbalula also announced that a gala dinner will be held at Emperors Palace tonight where selected items, including Mayweather’s boxing gown, will be auctioned. "Proceeds will go towards uplifting the Dube Boys Club, which famously produced the late Jacob ‘Baby Jake’ Matlala, among other top boxers," said Mbalula. He said Mayweather will travel to Cape Town on Saturday.
The anticipated trip to East London, the mecca of boxing, is off Mayweather’s initial programme. But no one was at liberty to give details regarding the change of plan.
Mayweather — the highest-paid pugilist in the world — was also asked how much he was paid for the visit and who bankrolled it. He dodged that question, the way he has done to remain undefeated after 45 fights in 18 years as professional boxer.
Asked about the possibility of fighting in South Africa, Mayweather said he had been getting offers via e-mail.
"I just hope that we will do it one day," he said. Asked who he looks up to, he said: "I admire what other fighters have done, not only Sugar Ray Robinson, there is a whole lot of them, but I’ve always wanted to the first. I’m TBE — the best ever."
Mayweather praised Phillip Ndou for being a tough competitor, though he stopped Ndou in the seventh round for the World Boxing Council lightweight title in 2003.
He made it clear that proper guidance to fighters must begin from the early stage of their careers.
"I was promoted by Bob Arum for eight years. I then started my own promotion. Why fight for someone who will pay me what he wants when I can promote my fights and keep 100% revenue? Fighters must pay managers, trainers, cut man and a percentage to boxing commissions and how much is a fighter left with? Lots of promoters do not pay.
"We, at Mayweather Promotions, believe that the fighter must win when all is said and done."

What do you guys think about the Pacquiao/Bradley rematch, which is now apparently set for April 12? I've never been extremely impressed by Pacquiao, but I don't see how Bradley can either stop him or outland him, especially on power shots. Pacquiao by a competitive, but unanimous, decision. I think Pacquiao will be at least a slight underdog, somewhere between even and +200. Since I have to be places on both the Friday before the fight and the Monday after it, I plan to fly to Las Vegas on the morning of the fight, place just $5, 000 on Pacquiao (Yes, you read that right. The guy doesn't really impress me), then fly back on Sunday. Since my schedule's then clear until April 24, if Pacquiao wins, I will go to Playa del Carmen, El Salvador, or even the Dominican Republic after I do what I have to the Monday after the fight.

I'm glad Broner got exposed. Golden Boy are trying to make stars out of far too many fighters too quickly. I can't see the re-match being any different. I suppose if I were him I'd go down to 140 where he might just be able to hold his own with the second tier guys. I wouldn't go to 135 though, as guys like Gamboa and Terrence Crawford will dominate him with ease. I can even see someone like Prescott giving him big trouble.
I really hope Mayweather doesn't fight Khan but it's looking like he will. Mind you I don't see many fighters at and around 147 giving Mayweather much trouble. Erislandy Lara and Pacquiao are the only two off the top of my head.
I like the Pacquiao Bradley fight though. I thought Bradley looked much improved against Marquez, so hopefully that one will be interesting.
RE: Official Boxing Thread for Videos, History, Interviews, Analysis, etc.
The card in May may be Mayweather-Khan as the main event and Maidana-Broner as the co-feature. There is some question as to whether Maidana will want to return as early as May due to the fact that his girlfriend is scheduled to give birth in mid-March and I don't believe he will be training between now and then. That would give him at most something like six weeks to train for the fight.
RE: Official Boxing Thread for Videos, History, Interviews, Analysis, etc.
If Amir Khan were to beat Floyd Mayweather he would win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year (a big sporting award handed out each December to what the public vote as being the best British sporting achievement that year).
As such - instead of betting on him to beat Floyd Mayweather - you would be better off betting on him to win the Sports Personality of the Year.
I just looked it up - he is currently 50/1 for next year's award. Anyone wanna' guess what his odds would be in the fight against Mayweather? Do you get genrous odds in boxing matches? Since it is a two horse race (so to speak). I always imagine the odds are never that generous - since you are only dealing with two outcomes.

RE: Official Boxing Thread for Videos, History, Interviews, Analysis, etc.
Back in October 2013 - odds of 16/1 were been touted for Khan to beat Mayweather.
So there you have it.
Would you bet on Khan at 16/1 to beat Mayweather? Maybe not.
But you can get essentially the same bet with odds of 50/1 by simply betting on Khan to win the Sports Personality award for next December. Since if Khan surprised the world by beating Mayweather - I am very confident that no other British sportsman would pull off a more impressive feat in 2014.
Andy Murray could win Wimbledon again - I suppose. But even then - Khan would still be in with a very good shout. And with odds at 50/1 versus 16/1 I think it makes for a better bet.

If Khan beat Mayweather I still don't think he'd win SPOTY. Boxing doesn't resonate with the public on a large enough scale IMO. A lot of them just think it's two brutes going at it and aren't aware that it's a skill.
Edit: Joe Calzaghe won in 2007. However, people don't like Amir Khan in the same way. Is it because he's of Pakistani descent? I think it has something to do with it.

I disagree. I think Pacquiao will be the betting favorite in that bout and I'd be surprised if it was otherwise. Most people who watched their first bout had Pac as the clear winner and he is still the bigger name so I would think more action on him. I agree with your assessment that Pacquiao wins by close, but unanimous decision.
Out of curiosity, why have you never been impressed by Pacquiao? He's not Mayweather good but few in history are. He makes great action fights, stays busy and hasn't looked bad in any fight over the past 7-8 years.

Bradley is several spots ahead of Pacquiao on the pound for pound list, he has had two impressive victories since the Pacquiao fight, he is undefeated, and Pacquiao has been knocked out since they fought. Pacquiao does, however, have a much better name. All things considered, I see Bradley as a slight favorite, but I think Pacquiao has a better chance.

What about his work rate (the amount of punches he throws)? His physical conditioning? His athleticism? His combination of speed, power, and balance?
The grace and class that he carries himself with?
None of those things have impressed you?
Just curious..
What current fighters have impressed you and why?
(excluding Mayweather -- he is impressive for many obvious reasons)

RE: Official Boxing Thread for Videos, History, Interviews, Analysis, etc.
Khan has a weak chin. But I don't think Mayweather will land many clear hits since he is not aggressive enough.
Khan can be terrible sometimes - and brilliant at other times. And I just sense that Mayweather is due an upset. For instance - how many people would have predicted that Pacquio would have lost 2 of his recent fights?
But like I say. I don't have much to go - just a gut feeling. Styles make fights - and I think Khan will be looking for a war with Mayweather. IN boxing - when you get into a war - it tends to even the differences between the fighters.
@Teedub - I hear what you are saying. But the British public do tend to reward outstanding achievement when it takes place. And I think beating Mayweather will grab the public's imagination. Particularly in a year when British sporting success will be thin on the ground elsewhere. Amir Khan and Joe Calzaghe have similar levels of fame. And if Khan beat Mayweater - it would outrank anything Calzaghe did.

I'm not cardguy and I don't think Khan will win, but I think he'll do well early on due to his speed. He's the quickest fighter Floyd has fought in a long time, and if I remember correctly one of Floyd's closest decisions was against Jose Luis Castillo - who was quick. Some think Mayweather actually lost that night.
However he's far better now than he was then either way. Nobody is his weight class can win against him IMO. They only way he loses is if he has to fight someone a lot naturally bigger. They're pushing for a possible GGG fight, but that's a step too far. He might be able to beat some of the light punching middleweights though. Nothing would surprise me though with Floyd!

There are LOTS of pound for pound lists. Some have Bradley above Pacquiao (ESPN, Ring Magazine), some have Pacman higher (Sports Illustrated, some of the HBO guys on the "Fight Game with Jim Lampley". Personally, given that their first fight wasn't very close (despite the judges scoring), I'd have to make Pacquaio a solid favorite. But I do think Bradley will come to FIGHT because he was so disheartened about how unpopular he became after their last fight. I think he will want to be a crowd pleaser and will brawl with Manny so that, win or lose, he'll still be an attraction.

I've thought that, as well. I mean, Floyd is still a HUGE favorite. But Khan has two attributes that could make this interesting: One is that he has quick hands, and the other is that he has power. We know Floyd can be hurt, and a guy with fast hands who can land a solid shot just MIGHT make things interesting. Khan's biggest weakness in this fight isn't his soft chin; Mayweather doesn't hit that hard and certainly won't want to bang with Khan when he can outclass him. His biggest weakness is CONSISTENCY: Some nights Khan looks great, other nights, like a bum. He better bring his A-game against Floyd or he's toast.
