I finally saw the fight (I fell asleep just before the opening bell) and am not sure why Walters quit. He didn't look hurt at all and although he was losing pretty bad, he has really good power and could have landed something big.

Rather surprised Walters quit as well.

That last round he looked befuddled & frustrated, but rarely if ever do we see an unbeaten champion flat out quit

In the leadup to the fight, HBO played a piece about Walters having adopted Panama as new training home. Sure I wasn't the only viewer who found irony in him saying "No Mas"

The real HBO version of the fight with the HBO commentary is on you tube. I really doubt it will be up much longer.

There's a slim chance, maybe a really slim chance, that I will be involved in the negotiations for Lomachenko's next fight, for the non-Lomachenko side. If it happens, you guys might not be hearing from me anymore.

I think Loma just broke Walters mentally because he couldn't land anything...

Man, Walters quit because he was fighting a shadow. He wasn't hurt, he was whupped. I have complete sympathy. Give me a physical beating over that any day - Walters was humiliated.

We'd be very sad to miss your input here Merenguero. Sounds like a great opportunity. Being on the non-Lomachenko side could be a rough place to be Wink

Walters didn't want to get knocked out. He didn't want to face that humiliation on worldwide television.

(some fighters would rather face the shame of quitting, with their face and brain intact -- Rather then continue fighting and risk serious damage)

I was so impressed with the athleticism and instincts of Lomachenko! He is a master of space (distance) and time. What a fighter!

Walters stayed right in front of him and make it easy for Lomachenko. I would have liked to see Walters use more movement, more faking, more foot fakes, feigns, lateral movement, etc.

If you let a great fighter fight as his rhythm and at the angles he likes, it's tough to beat him... You must do something to disrupt him.

--

Ward was the same way with Kovalev...

He stayed directly in front of him. This made it easier for Kovalev. I was expecting more athletic movement form Ward. Staying directly in front of a heavy puncher is a dangerous move.

Kovalev controlled Ward with constant feinting, feigning, and bluffing. (followed by serious power shots)

Ward did recover in the last 6 rounds. Kovalev got a little tired and it cost him.

I had Kovalev as the winner -- 114 to 113 -- But, I think a "draw" would have been fair.

Ward was very good in the last 6 rounds. Showed his class and conditioning.

Rematch should be good.

Ward offering to fight GGG at 175: http://www.boxingnews24.com/2016/11/andr...ight-175/. Doubtful it'd happen but it'd be interesting to see the line on a fight like that, especially after Ward's "win" over Kovalev.

Golovkin came into my restaurant last year and the guy was a class act - ended up signing autographs and taking pictures for 20 minutes before we finally asked the crowd to let him eat... his crew was almost finished before the guy got a bite in but he didn't complain or grumble at all. Very polite and well mannered.

I feel so much better putting money on GGG than all of the the bets I put on Mayweather - feels good rooting for someone I admire AND I end up winning money.

I saw the talks about Lomachenko vs Rigondeaux next. My two favourite technicians, I hope it happens!

I'm watching tonight's Saunders fight right now on youtube. I have no idea how it was uploaded so fast. Everyone is saying that Saunders looked really bad. If that's true, I have to seriously reconsider my plan of betting half on Alvarez and half on the over rounds if Saunders does end up fighting Alvarez in 2017.

Golovkin/Jacobs, March 18, Madison Square Garden. Take the under rounds regardless of what the number of rounds is and what the odds are. Somebody is becoming a good boy within eight rounds and I'm not even sure it is Jacobs.

What a sad way for Hopkins to go down and end his career. Hopkins got beaten up badly by Father Time (and a ton of punches from Smith). I guess 51yo is too old, even for a boxer as disciplined as Hopkins.

I'll forget about last night, and remember Hopkins for his other great performances (Trinidad, Tarver, Pavlick, Pascal).

I think he will become a good coach (if he decides to go that route). His ring IQ is one of the best, and I'm sure he can pass it to young boxers.

Too bad Hopkins didn't learn from Muhammad Ali or Roy Jones Jr. and has tarnished his career by staying in it for way too long. He should have retired after the Kovalev fight, at least then he got beat by decision against a top 5 P4P fighter, not a journeyman like Smith.

This is why I still admire Rocky Marciano who IMHO is the greatest heavyweight of all time (Not Ali or Joe Luis)...he knew when to quit and quit at the top of his division having defeated almost all challengers by KO.

Agreed, except for the part about Smith being a journeyman. The guy could hold his own against Ward and Kovalev and maybe even pull off an upset again either of them.

It will sell out fast. I won't be there. I'll probably be at the Tilted Kilt in Las Vegas feeling a little nervous.

What do you guys thing about these three fights, all of which will happen within the next few months: Golovkin/Jacobs, Pacquiao/Jeff Horn, and Alvarez/Chavez?

By far the most likely scenario in Golovkin/Jacobs is Golovkin by stoppage in the early to mid rounds. It most likely won't go the distance. Jacobs could knock Golovkin out, but it is unlikely. This one seems like the easiest to predict out of these three.

As for Pacquaio/Horn, odds should be excellent for Pacquiao by knockout. I think there is a good chance that Pacquiao stops him and that there is also a good chance that Pacquiao wins by decision. The fact that Pacquiao has not knocked anyone out since he knocked out Cotto in 2009 will definitely make the odds better for anyone betting on a Pacquiao knockout. The reason why I think it is a good bet is that Horn looks slow, hitable, and very easy to counter. Also, Horn has been knocked down by C and D level fighters. If Pacquiao does not stop him, it is 100% that he will knock Horn down at least once.

Alvarez/Chavez: I think Alvarez's management was extremely stupid for agreeing to, or worse yet, proposing a 164.5 pound catchweight. Alvarez is the A-side and he could have earned a huge and safe payday by giving a rematch to Cotto, who clearly wants a rematch with Alvarez. Alvarez shouldn't have even thought about making any concessions in this one. I would say 160, take it or leave it. That being said, Chavez has not weighed in at under 167.5 for any fight since the Martinez fight in September 2012 (yes, you read that right). He will struggle like hell to even make 164.5, which I am pretty sure he will do and he will have a one million dollar per pound penalty for every pound over the weight limit he is at the weigh in. If he makes weight, the first thing is he will likely be very drained, and the second thing is that his training camp concentrated mostly on him making weight and not on boxing. If he misses weight, he likely didn't train hard enough.

Overall, Chavez is a wild card. He looked excellent in the Andy Lee fight, especially after the first two rounds. Unfortunately for him, that fight was in June 2012 and he has looked absolutely horrible since then. In the Martinez fight, he barely threw any punches and took a crazy amount of punches. Freddie Roach was talking about stopping the fight and another referee may have done the same as he took a huge amount of punishment. This fight also took place when Chavez was, or should have been, at the height of his career.

I say Alvarez by late round stoppage here, but wouldn't be surprised by Alvarez by decision. I don't see Chavez doing any better than he did in the Martinez fight and he was completely destroyed by Martinez. In this one, he is more shopworn, has been largely inactive since 2012, is fighting a guy who attacks the body more than Martinez and probably hits harder than Martinez. I will say that Martinez was higher volume than Alvarez, is a southpaw, and is more athletic and faster than Alvarez. I'm thinking the Alvarez by knockout prop will be a really good deal.

I saw Vinny fight an over the hill Roberto Duran (2nd fight) in 95.

Cool part was Donald Trump entering, just before the main event.
The crowd went fucking wild. (fight was in Atlantic City)

The Donald just turned, and nonchalantly gave the crowd a wave, and they
got even louder!! Met Roy Jones that night too... Very good times, for sure.

So Angel Manfredy will be teaching a seminar near me. Do you all on here think it would be worth attending at $25?

When I get a chance, I might answer this question via P.M. I'm not sure I'm comfortable even doing that. I will say that Lomachenko isn't presently signed to fight anyone, so the short answer is no.

Also, and I'm completely surprised by this, it seems like over half, maybe well over half of people, including people in the boxing business, are picking Chavez over Canelo. Am I really missing something here? Back in September 2012, I saw that a lot of people were picking Chavez over Martinez. I was 100% sure that Chavez didn't have a snowball's chance in hell and caught a flight to Las Vegas, a place where I had never been in my life. I put a heavy bet on Martinez, thinking the fight would be somewhat close. Chavez got completely destroyed in that fight and he was supposed to be in his prime. What makes anyone think he will do any better against Alvarez under the present circumstances?

Now there's yet another thing that baffles me about this fight. I just saw the first online prop bet posted today. The odds are presently -230 that the fight won't go the distance. The vast majority of people making predictions are predicting that the fight will go the distance. So, we have -900 odds for Alvarez despite tons and tons of people predicting that Chavez will win and now, somewhat heavy odds that it will go the distance, despite the fact that people tend to think that Chavez with his iron chin and size will be on his feet after the twelfth round. The only explanation I can come up with is that the people who are picking Chavez are a bunch of broke idiots who can't put their money where their mouth is because they don't have any.

I say the most overused term/concept in this sport is having a strong chin. Does a strong chin protect you from body punches? Does a strong chin keep you from getting cut? Does a strong chin prevent swelling around the eyes? As far as I can tell, all a strong chin really does is protect you from one punch knockouts to the chin. What percentage of knockouts/TKOs/stoppages are from one punch knockouts to the chin? 10%?
