RE: The Movie Thread
I didn't like Nocturnal Animals.

The main point was the journey of Amy Adams, and I don't care about her epiphanies.

Sending a novel to some chick who rejected you years ago is painful to contemplate, and another reminder that learning about the true nature of men and women make most movies unwatchable.

Because of what you now know, you would just say next in your mind, and that would be the end of the movie. So the whole movie is based on someone not knowing to next a chick, and somehow thinking that you can passive aggressively send her something in the mail, she will read it and feel regret for what she has lost or something? What a gay idea, even if it works, which it won't in real life. She will just think, ha ha, he is still thinking about me.

And what is your big revenge? You plan a date with her and not show up? That is your thunderbolt from Olympus? Fruity Fail!

The next thing I hated about it is the story itself. The last thing I want to see is a man humiliated by other men in front of his women. That is not entertainment to me, and I get no pleasure in some dude wallowing in his failure for years, and feeling emasculated until some hick alpha dude goads him into going feral.

So, the framing story is a gay guy's idea of revenge, oh snap hunny! And a novel about a man's emasculation and regret over it. He even fucks up his revenge.

Not entertaining. No lessons.

The protagonist is the chick, and the change in her character is she somehow realized what she lost or something? Who cares about her, the dude is humiliating himself in person and in fiction.

The dude who sent her the book that she read is nothing to her or the filmmaker, just another disposable dude out there to help a woman learn a valuable lesson that never gets explicitly stated so all the girls watching it can project whatever lesson they feel like learning onto it.

Title sucks too. Nocturnal Animals. So deep. Probing the unconscious are we? Rescuing our souls from cold moms and violent rednecks? Clunky. Boring. No.

"On is off and off is on. We confuse the language."

RE: The Movie Thread
Rewatched Stalingrad (1993) again last night. It's one of the greatest war films I've ever seen. I don't think the extent of that battle could ever be recaptured, but this film does a great job. Highlights include the bond developed between the German soldiers, and the fact that the Russians aren't dehumanized or cast in a bad light, even though they were the enemy in the German perspective. The ending is literally chilling.

I felt like watching another WW2 film afterwards. After some searching, I came upon Come and See (1985), a Belorussian film, covering a segment and perspective of the war that's almost entirely overlooked and neglected.

This movie has a 95% on RT and it's no mistake. I think it's a must watch because I don't think the horrors of war have ever been portrayed so effectively on a screen. Better said horrifically. It's not a movie to watch for cheap thrills, but it's one to give you perspective. I don't think any modern hardship could even come close to being a fraction of what the boy had to endure. It's heartbreaking to see his innocence give way.

It's a depressing movie, so don't watch it before a night out. It has some slow moments. But like I said, it's not a piece of entertainment. Really makes you reflect.

Any hardcore Kubrick fans around?, Just watched his last film last night and It managed to creep me out a bit. I really enjoyed 'Eyes wide shut' a lot, is full metal jacket and dr strangelove just as good as this one?

It had way too much comedy and some of the characters I hated like Drax and Kurt Russell's character. I got out of it seeing a little while ago.

My favorite director of all time. He never made a movie under five stars after his early movies in the 1950's. He is the best director ever . . . period.

"Eyes Wide Shut," while very creepy, is probably the weakest effort on this list:
Spartacus
Lolita
Dr. Strangelove
2001: A Space Odessey
A Clockwork Orange
The Shining
Full Metal Jacket
Eyes Wide Shut

And for those of you who want to argue the point, just remember: "Gentlemen. You can't fight in here. This is the War Room!"

If you liked Stalingrad try watching Talvisota (or The winter war in english). Long, and I think the single most expensive film made in Finland, but I found it very good.

They couldn't add in any bitches that could double Ellen Degeneres, so they settled for Harry Styles. No biggy, gonna watch the fuck out this movie.

Just stumbled upon this -

Seems faithful to the overall feel of its predecessor, just hope it's not nonstop action with zero introspection. Which I don't think it will be given its October release date (ie after summer blockbuster masturbation is wound up). Anyway, will definetly spend $15 to watch in theaters and probably even tack on some $10 nachos to my tab.

Cool. Movie re-makes typically suck, but this is actually a sequel to the original "Blade Runner." Harrison Ford even reprises his role as Rick Deckard. And Ridley Scott, although not directing this time, is the Executive Producer. I like the odds.

BTW: In reference to my earlier post, if you are a Stanley Kubrick fan, you will really like most movies directed by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner; Gladiator; Black Hawk Down; Alien; Prometheus; etc.) and Darren Aronofsky (Pi; Requiem for a Dream; The Fountain; The Wrestler; Black Swan). Great directors all.

Nolan is often accused of being a closet conservative, many of his movies have some way of attacking the left, in The Dark Knight Rises the movement that takes over Gotham controlled by Bane is based on the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Yeah that new Blade Runner movie looks like it will be pretty good.

And it has this super fine cubana in it.

Another thing that Blade Runner has going for it is Roger Deakins. So the cinematography will be absolutely amazing, to say the least.

I did not like the camera work at all. Part of it looks like they strapped go pros on the cast members. Some of the scene cutting decisions were bizarre. No real feeling of danger during fights. They replaced Merlin with a chick. I suppose all older men guiding younger men instances are verboten on screen.

The first Lego movie had some funny moments, but only in the sense that it made it watchable for the parents rather than a complete waste of the admission price for anyone other than kids.

It's nothing I'd ever sit down and watch by myself.

Character flaws are the whole point of movies.

Movies about fully self-actualized individuals who go about life doing exactly what they should do to maximize their bliss are boring.

Neither the jilted lover nor Amy Adams are presented as any sort of role model. If there's any consistent theme in the film is that relations between the sexes are dysfunctional, which should resonate to red-pillers.

I'd say, pound for pound, that the jilted lover kind of "wins" in the end because in the process of writing the story, getting her worked up reading it, and then giving her a dose of her own medicine, he probably wound up exorcising his demons. It would have been nice if he were not tempted by revenge at all, but as far as identifying with characters, who here hasn't wished for some sort of justice against someone who dumped us?

I thought it was more likely that he'd try to kill her than to simply flake on a dinner date. The fact they didn't just have him pull an axe out ala Christian Bale was a nice twist, and showed that he's not just a stereotypical psychopath. You never really know how much of what he wrote in that story was purely done to manipulate her vs. him desperately needing a psychological outlet. That's the whole point of the film, that authorial intent is subjective. Those close to authors will always see themselves in the writing whether it's truly there or not. And guess what, smart authors know this, and can play with it. It's like that in music too, like Carly Simon You're So Vain. That's the power of artistry, is filing off the serial numbers enough that you never have enough ammo to really accuse them of basing it on you.

I saw the new Alien, it was ok. Wasn't that scary, but did have more lore. Great visuals, but again plagued by supposedly smarr people making stupid decisions. Just once I want to see a new horror movie where people do things by the book but still get fucked anyway. Oh, and there is a robot on robot gay kiss which was weird as fuck. It wasn't a bad movie, but wasn't that good. I like Prometheus better.
