Recently saw "Arrival" (2016)





Decent movie. The plot is reminiscent of Interstellar. Don't want to spoil it, but you'll see if you watch it.

Same director from Sicario, Enemy, and Prisoners.

Watched "Hacksaw Ridge", "Patriots Day", and "Silence".

Hacksaw Ridge, about a conscientious objector who never held a gun, but rescued a whole bunch a people off a jap held ridgeline. Really good movie, fairly slow at a few times, but the action scenes were pretty dang explicit. Based on real life dude.

Patriots Day is about the Boston marathon bombings, pretty good at showing the events, but I did not follow it closely in real life, so I'm not sure exactly what was wrong or right.

Silence is about roman catholic missionaries in Japan, very poignant cinematography at times, some scenes made me feel stuff. I enjoyed most of it, some parts seemed to drag, "yeah I get it, message conveyed, let's move on!" Not sure how much of it is true, I don't know much of that history.

This movie was fine until it lost its nerve. It was very red pill in its treatment of younger women and their lack of innocence.

We have Reeves' character, a family man living his life and trying to do the right thing, and put in a situation of extreme temptation, and succumbing to it.

We have two young women who are already masters of psychological, sexual, and emotional manipulation, pulling the man's strings, making him jump around like a puppet, and finally seducing him.

If you have ever been in a relationship where you are the head of a family, and you spend a lot of your time sacrificing your time and your needs and your opinions to make the whole thing work, you can't help but identify with Reeve's character, and know that your own fidelity is the result of never being put in a situation that pushes all your buttons and plays on all your weaknesses.

So, as a study of the dynamics between men and women, especially older men and younger women, and let me tell you, as a man who has been there, there are a lot of younger women who come into your life casually and test your self control by flirting outrageously when no one is looking.

They know intuitively how hard you are working to be a good man, and they know you would like to just do something for yourself, something you want to do, just this once, and they tease and challenge and flirt in a way that makes your life very difficult.

They want to see if they can either fuck you or make you squirm.

Ok, so far so good. The movie shows this whole dynamic playing out.

This is where spoilers commence, so if you want to see it fresh, stop reading now.

This is where the movie totally fucking loses its nerve.

Why were the girls doing what they were doing? Was it because all women are like that?

No. It was because they were especially evil women. Because no normal woman or girl could ever be like this right? This weak twist is all a sop to female hamsters everywhere. These women are super smart, super capable, super violent gender vigilantes, who beat up the main character, a guy, kill his best friend, another guy, and reveal that they spy on married men in hopes of finding someone who is too good to be seduced by them.

All a weak weak weak plot twist.

The only reason they are playing super twelfth dimensional chess with all sorts of men is that they are especially evil, because NAWALT.

Would have been far more interesting without that fucking Hollywood cliche turning point.

Also, there is that point, completely false emotionally if you have seen the whole movie, where Reeves character, in trying to defend what he did with the girls, keeps saying it was like free pizza!

Because that is what guys are like, right? First the filmmaker had to exaggerate the evil of the girls so women in the audience could say to themselves, "I'm not like those evil girls," and then they had to paint Reeves as a typical neanderthal man, like all men, for whom having sex is just like getting free pizza.

Like this guy didn't love his wife, or his kids, or care about anything but his dick, and was waiting for a chance to sneak away and have a threesome with a couple of nubiles.

This again was a concession to the sensibilities of the women in the audience, because God forbid we depict women realistically or men with sympathy, and come up with an awesome movie.

Nope, turn the badness of women into caricatures to let other women off the hook, and exaggerate and misrepresent the character of the man so no one in the audience will have sympathy for him, and tie everything up into a neat little bow where the secretly evil, in other words normal, man gets exactly what he deserves.

Weak! Could have been a good one.

I really liked "Sicario." I loved "Enemy," which was a real freakout. It has been called one of the scariest endings of any film ever made. I would more accurately say: highly disturbing and uber-creepy. It features Jake Gyllenhaal. I have been a big fan of Jake Gyllenhaal ever since "Donnie Darko," which is a great sci-fi mystery film. Of course, he was also in "Nightcrawler."

I just watched a French-film titled "Cache," which is a Hitchcock-type mystery thriller. The ending leaves you guessing. So, you will either love the movie or hate it.

Watched Arrival last night. Minor spoilers follow, I guess.

There were plenty of good things about it. This was one of the most interesting portrayals of an alien first contact I'd seen on film, and a welcome departure from boring rubber forehead aliens. It also lacked any real leftist agenda (that I noticed) and felt like classic science fiction, from that point of view. It had a female protagonist who actually seemed like a woman instead of a man with boobs.

But the movie suffered from two major problems:

1) Characters. I didn't care about anyone in this movie. Especially not the main chick. She had all the charisma of soggy cardboard and I never cared what happened to her or what the deal was with her kid (which was a lame plot twist, by the way.) Considering that they managed to make a female protagonist who seemed mostly devoid of SJW agenda, it's a shame that she's so dull and uninteresting.
2) People acting stupid. It really strained credibility to think that the governments would act so pointlessly hostile toward aliens who showed zero sign of aggression, based almost entirely on a single message that easily could have been misunderstood. It felt like the powers that be were forced to act stupid because the plot demanded it, a hallmark of bad writing.

Despite these problems I still thought it was a pretty good movie, but I doubt I'd watch it again.

Lion was really good. A man on a mission. Very good story.

Arrival sucked. Way too sappy. Light on the science and the sci-fi.

I saw John Wick 2 the night of release. While I was watching it, I was worried that the second one would be a let down and not come any where near as good as the first one. It as dreadful, I didn't want my heart to be broken and my image John Wick to be forever tainted.

I was overly impressed by the end.

They bought back so many of the funny parts of the first movie and the action scenes were fantastic.

Really do recommend anyone that loved or even just enjoyed the first movie to watch it.

I feel the same way, but I think they did that with all the characters in the movie. Everyone John fought and killed were built up in a way. It's just the movies way of showing that John Wick is the god of war in their world. No mortal can beat him or kill him, despite their own success.

Yeah, it was excellent. Fight scenes were great with medium wide shots and less cuts than most action movies.

The owner of the Continental got more screen time in this one and he's great.

One of the best action movies of all time.

Just to reiterate what everyone said Jon Wick 2 is just amazing. Even outside the action the tone of the movie was spectacular. The final scene in the park really resonated with me and what a great way to start the movie as well.
