RE: Health: Juicing
Holy shit.

Just made a juice including:

Carrots
Beets
Lemon
Apple
Tangerine
Celery
Cabbage

It was disgusting to drink, but tolerable. Not as bad as ACV.

I feel like a superhuman.

RE: Health: Juicing
^ Good question.

You can't juice bananas. It will just form a mush that will clog your juicer.

You can't juice pineapple with the skin off (although pineapple is delicious).

If you juice berries, you won't really get any juice out of them. They'll just sort of spin out into the pulp bin. It's a waste of money.

You can juice parsley and other herbs. You need to use this trick, though, or else you won't get much juice out of them:

How to Juice Parsley.

That's really all that comes to mind off the top of my head.

Stick with the juicing recipes and you'll be fine.

MikeCF:

I agree with everything you said when it comes to attempting to juice some of these products - if your definition of juicing is to separate the juice from the fiber and/or pulp.

On the other hand, if a guy wants to include these kinds of fiber and/pulp items into his conception of a beverage, he could blend them in, and in that regard, a Vitamix works well for combining nearly any food products.

Personally, i do NOT buy into the juicing philosophy that separates the pulp and the fiber b/c I want to keep pulp and fiber into the end product that i am drinking - b/c I am of the belief that these fiberous and pulp aspects are good for our nutrition and well being. Therefore, I use a Vitamix. I think Blendtech is another powerful brand of blender that is frequently used by guys who engage in this alternative mode of "juicing" that includes leaving in the fiberous and pulpous parts of the foods.

This is not my definition. That is the universal definition of juicing. Blending whole foods is making smoothies.

The whole "Juicing v Blending" debate is really one of the stupidest things out there. I juice, I blend, I eat salads and steamed broccoli.

You have an "opinion" but do you even juice bro?

Lots of guys here are juicing.

Their experiences are uniformly positive - better skin, more energy, less need for caffein (and many have given up coffee altogether).

That's the reality of juicing.

Not opinion, not theory, not speculation. Reality.

Juice or not, it's your choice.

But the juicing v. blending debate is just total nonsense and really misses the point.

The goal is better health. Juicing is one way to better health. If guys want to eat 5 pounds of vegetables, great. If they want to do a Joe Rogan Kale Shake, great.

Yes, I have read through this whole thread, including references to those various links in previous posts. Surely, it does NOT hurt anything to post them again. I disagree with you that a debate on the topic of juicing versus blending is stupid; however, I am NOT advocating, here or in my prior post, just mentioning the option to blend rather than juice.

(11-17-2013 04:13 PM)MikeCF Wrote:  You have an "opinion" but do you even juice bro?

Yes, I have an opinion, and I was NOT advocating that people move away from juicing or to follow my opinion. You seem to want to advocate for juicing, even though you say that the debate is stupid. That seems a little bit like wanting to argue, just for the sake of arguing. I have nothing against juicing for other people, if juicing is what floats their boat.
Also, I have tried juicing; yet to me, there seems to be NO need to debate whether I have done it or the extent to which I had done it and felt any difference or NOT because whether I had done it is NOT really that essential to the point that I was making about the blending option.

O.k. You are advocating for juicing, and I have no problem with that. I also have no problem that some guys may claim positive results – whether it is uniform or NOT would have to be surveyed in a scientific way, and likely none of us are going to want to go down that road to fund such a study.

(11-17-2013 04:13 PM)MikeCF Wrote:  Juice or not, it's your choice.

Shouldn’t this be the point. Guys can chose what which way they want to go, and if some guys want to try juicing, nothing wrong with that.

(11-17-2013 04:13 PM)MikeCF Wrote:  But the juicing v. blending debate is just total nonsense and really misses the point.

In sum, you are saying that juicing versus blending is nonsense because juicing is better than blending. Ok.. you can have your opinion.. nothing wrong with that.

Now you are saying that either juicing or blending is o.k., which is probably a better position to be in.
Personally, if I did NOT use a Vitamix, probably I would NOT go through the trouble of eating some of the vegetables that I end up eating / drinking.

Ultimately, MikeCF, if this is your position, that a guy can do either juicing or blending, then we are probably close in our thinking – and if we get into the weeds, then we likely have different rationales for our thinking, but really, I do NOT see any reason to argue about this kind of thing or the point that I was making in my earlier post, which was just to point out the option of blending those items that were mentioned (bananas and fruits and pinapples or whatever else -- - actually a guy could even throw in some eggs or some dirt from the back yard. he he he.. Smile but don’t store the end product too long if you throw in the eggs or other animal proteins and probably throwing in dirt may NOT be a good idea for various reasons, but the vitamix will blend any of these non-traditional items and the juicer will have troubles with the inclusion of non-traditional items).

"do you even ________ bro?"

In my few interactions with MikeCF, and my short duration on this forum, the above slogan would work for a few different topics.

I'm NOT hating or judging MikeCF, just drawing a conclusion from my limited experience.

OK, here's some game/life advice. You are being passive aggressive.

Here is what happened. A guy posted this question:

Quote:After some motivation from this thread, I've finally ordered myself a juicer. It just came in, I got the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth mentioned here.

One thing I haven't seen in this thread yet and has come to my mind: What should you avoid juicing?

So what did you point about blending have to do with the guy's question?

He ordered a juicer - one that many guys have used. He wanted to know what foods not to use in it.

Then you come in talking about blending. (Blending, again, is great.) You wanted to make a point about blending.

But your point about blending had nothing to do with the question the guy asked, nor with my answer.

Now you want to act like I am just starting an argument.

Incidentally, I don't even care if guys want to argue. I think most health arguments are pretty whack. If you're doing something that is healthy, it just seems lame to say, "But this is healthier."

[As an aside: Juicing in my opinion is better than blending. The nutrients most of us need are the micronutrients and phytonutrients contained in vegetables. Go run 1 pound of kale through a blender and drink that. Good luck. Now go juice 1 pound of kale. That's easy to drink.

Go blend 2 pounds of carrots. Now go juice 2 pounds. Which can you actually take down consistently, on a daily basis?

Many of my juices contain 5 pounds of vegetables. If you blended that, assuming you could take it down without vomiting, you're now walking around with a log in your gut.

Where as I just drink the 24-32 ounces of juice. Now I'm nutrient charged, hydrated, ready to kill.

Fiber is great, but you can get fiber in other foods. I am after the plant nutrients and seek to maximize my consumption of those.]

But really, is juicing so much better than I get into a bunker and go to war over it?

Or that I jump into a thread about smoothies and say, "You should be juicing. It's superior."

No way. If guys are doing something great, it's one-upmanship to say, "My way is better."

And as I've said repeatedly: I juice, I blend, I eat veggies.

But don't act like you're just some innocent party.

You came in looking for an argument. I gave you what you asked for.

But it's nothing personal. Guys disagree with me all the time. I don't get butt hurt..

Men can disagree and be OK with one another.

I have a vitamix and I prefer it over juicing because you can use the whole fruit and veggie. Theres this video Joe Rogan posted a while back of the drink he has every morning. Although I dont really agree with the need for all the supplements his drink is actually pretty good.

This seems like labeling my activity, rather than advising, and to me, it seems you got your label wrong. It is my assessment that I was adding a perspective to a discussion regarding a drink. That is NOT passive aggressive.

So what did you point about blending have to do with the guy's question?

You, Mike, answered the guy’s question, and then I added to your answer to suggest that those ingredients could be placed into a Vitamix, if such a guy were inclined to make a drink that is composed of the suggested ingredients that you were saying could NOT be effectively juiced (which I agree, and I said that I agree with you). Further I added that those ingredients could be blended.

I’m NOT sure if I agree completely with your rendition of the facts or your conclusion about what was a fair related topic for the thread.
Nonetheless, for the purposes of “argument,” let us assume that all of your above facts are correct and it is the right conclusion that I butted into a conversation with information that was NOT adequately related to the topic being discussed.
In the end, does it really matter that I may have added that non-related information? I jumped in because I thought that I was contributing to what guys may be interested in knowing, and if they were NOT interested, they could ignore it.
Let’s say that I was wrong, and guys really do NOT want to know what I stated, then, I am NOT sure whether I recognize any real major problem with my attempting to contribute because I did NOT jump into this with any mal-intention, as you seem to be becoming more and more adamant that I have some kind of ill will or that I am butting in without adding value.
Even if I were to concede to you that I did NOT add value, I am NOT going to concede that my intent was to be a malicious intervener or whatever you are suggesting that I supposedly did.

(11-17-2013 09:51 PM)MikeCF Wrote:  Now you want to act like I am just starting an argument.

I’m NOT trying to act like you are starting an argument. I merely stated to you in my previous post that it appears to me that you are making a BIG deal to attempt to argue some issues in which you are all over the place. Accordingly, I directly stated that it appears to me that you are just arguing for the sake of arguing. Maybe I am coming to the wrong conclusion, but I am just pointing out what seems to be taking place.

(11-17-2013 09:51 PM)MikeCF Wrote:  Incidentally, I don't even care if guys want to argue. I think most health arguments are pretty whack. If you're doing something that is healthy, it just seems lame to say, "But this is healthier."

Maybe I am wrong, but out of the two of us, YOU seem to be the ONLY one that wants to argue? I am merely explaining in the context of your various statements directed at the content of my various posts. Another possibility is that we could extend this to PM, because it seems to be getting somewhat off topic.. regarding whether I supposedly maliciously butted into this topic or NOT.

Anyhow, you are saying that you do NOT care if guys want to argue..… and then you are saying that health arguments are whack, which you also said in the other post... But then in your recent post and then in the one prior to that, you go to show various assertions about health and the benefits of juicing. It seems to me that these assertions are a bit all over the place, yet there is nothing wrong with your being all over the place, except in the meantime you are criticizing my content as taking away from the discussion.

(11-17-2013 09:51 PM)MikeCF Wrote:  [As an aside: Juicing in my opinion is better than blending.

Thanks for stating your preference directly.

(11-17-2013 09:51 PM)MikeCF Wrote:  The nutrients most of us need are the micronutrients and phytonutrients contained in vegetables.

NOT everyone agrees with your assumption that vegetables are needed for our health and well-being.
For example, some people believe that a person can get a sufficient quantity of nutrients from meat, and that a person does NOT need to ingest vegetables in order to live a healthy life. In that regard, there exist essential fats and there exist essential proteins; however, there is no such thing as essential carbs, and vegetables are mostly carbs.. and to the extent that vegetables have fats and proteins, the essentials are more readily in meats.
But, fine, you have assumptions about various nutrients in vegetables)… and assumptions that we benefit from vegetables, and likely it is NOT going to kill anyone to include some vegetables in their diet. I do it myself to include about 10 to 30% carbs in my diet, which are mostly in the forms of vegetables. Out of all the carbs, it seems that vegetables are the least harmful, and there may be some benefits to eating them.. at least for the sake of variety in ones pallet, even though I question whether they are needed, as you suggest.
Also, I am NOT stating this to stop guys from juicing because guys can do what they want, especially if they are convinced that they are getting some kind of benefit from the practice.

(11-17-2013 09:51 PM)MikeCF Wrote:  Go run 1 pound of kale through a blender and drink that. Good luck. Now go juice 1 pound of kale. That's easy to drink.

Yes, juicing is one way to accomplish drinking the liquid parts of these items, if guys want to drink the liquid parts of these items. Another possible way to imbibe these products is to blend them and to add a liquid, such as water or coconut juice or some other liquid to the mix so that the end product is NOT thick. If guys prefer to juice these items, then I have NO problem with that suggestion, and accordingly, you provide good examples.

(11-17-2013 09:51 PM)MikeCF Wrote:  Where as I just drink the 24-32 ounces of juice. Now I'm nutrient charged, hydrated, ready to kill.

I am NOT sure whether you get that “charge” from some nutrients in the juice or NOT, but if it floats your boat to ingest your vegetables by separating the liquid portion in that way, then fine.

(11-17-2013 09:51 PM)MikeCF Wrote:  Fiber is great, but you can get fiber in other foods. I am after the plant nutrients and seek to maximize my consumption of those.]

It may sound a little contradictory; however, I am of the sense that we are mislead about conceptions of fiber and getting fiber and whether there is any benefits to focusing on fibers. Nonetheless, I generally tend to believe in eating whole foods as is the recommendations of the Weston Price Foundation and NOT throwing parts out, and the reason for me is NOT about fiber but it is about eating foods in their natural form because we cannot always know if we are missing somethings in the food when we separate them out and process them.. and juicing seems to be more of a processing out items in the food as compared with blending.

(11-17-2013 09:51 PM)MikeCF Wrote:  But really, is juicing so much better than I get into a bunker and go to war over it?

Or that I jump into a thread about smoothies and say, "You should be juicing. It's superior."

To follow your example here, I don't see any problem in the event that you were to jump into a thread about smoothies and to assert that juicing is better than blending, if you believe that the audience may be receptive to that. These different kinds of home made drinks products all fall into a similar category, so there may be some interest and benefit in talking about juicing in a blending conversation.

(11-17-2013 09:51 PM)MikeCF Wrote:  No way. If guys are doing something great, it's one-upmanship to say, "My way is better."

There may have been times in this thread that I mentioned that I have a preference for blending with the Vitamix or that I may have made such assertions in another health-related thread, but my recent posts were NOT intended to distract from any meaningful conversation that may ONLY have to do with juicing. In that regard, I was NOT advocating that my way is better.

(11-17-2013 09:51 PM)MikeCF Wrote:  And as I've said repeatedly: I juice, I blend, I eat veggies.

I came looking to contribute to the subject that was being discussed, as I already described, and yes, you gave me a fairly extended confrontation about my motives in whether I was trying to derail the thread in my contribution in a subject that you seem to have strong opinions. I did NOT ask to argue, and I am open to PM on this point to the extent that we may be getting a little off topic.

RE: Health: Juicing
Hey any of you guys notice the impact of juicing actually improves if you change dramatically your routine?

For example I think my body got used to kale and apples.

Switched to chlorella powder and ACV

Then to carrots and limes

Now I am back to kale and it is working again.

Also oddly enough when I take a week off from juicing (just did) I feel like my body improved temporarily.

TL;DR anyone else notice that taking breaks actually helps overall functioning?

Yes, I've noticed this with almost everything.

Our body gets used to the same routine and thus our results suffer.

The same foods and the same exercises is a recipe to burnout and plateau.

"The only constant in life is change"

Use it to your advantage.

New exercises, new foods, new women, new experiences, new perspectives.

If I ate the same things everyday I would go insane. I need variety. The body craves variety!

Keep it fresh.

Apple Cider Vinegar is popular only because of Bro-Science, right???

I have never seen anyone post any scientific data or evidence that supports the use of acv.. Other then saying that they wake up with a boner.

I can't notice a difference because I have woken up with a boner everyday of my life.

Is Apple Cider Vinegar 100% Bro-Science???

I hope so!

Hey Gio: You are duplicating yourself... he he he.. and ALSO aren't you afraid that you may be deviating from the topic of this thread... Smile Smile

I attempted to answer this question, in the ACV thread:

/thread-7518-p...#pid581818

Of course, guys in this "Juicing" thread may have a differing perspective about the advantages and/or disadvantages of ACV.... or may NOT have even considered ACV, yet (so I think a good call to point out ACV for guys to consider whether to add it or NOT or whether they even have used it)..

In my recent weeks of using ACV (maybe going on three weeks, now), I have added it into all kinds of foods, and included putting ACV in my various blended beverages.. from time to time - b/c i am thinking about mixing up ways to add that ACV into my daily routine in such a way that works to get it in b/c if a guy tries to drink ACV straight or tries to drink it with water, it seems to burn the throat too much.

What are everyone's thoughts on Athletic Greens? For those unfamiliar, it's basically a tub of dried green veggie powder that you can mix like a protein shake.

I picked up a tub. It tastes good and mixes easily. Seems like a good alternative for days when I don't make a fresh juice. Also, probably contains a more varied set of nutrients than just the carrot/celery/beet/ginger juice I make most days. I don't really feel different, but I already juice and eat a lot of greens in my diet.

Has anyone else tried this stuff?

^ if you mean those random green powders then yes it is a good substitute for days when you're really jammed.

Just wake up and toss it into a shaker and you're good to go.

It's best for work travel IMHO, fast and efficient.

From my experience real juice tends to be significantly better though

Personally, I assess these commercialized quick fixes to health as being profit motivated - and NOT likely to have many, if any, benefits beyond placebo and allowing the company to sell a product. Sure, it is possible that there may be some effect beyond placebo and even maybe these kinds of products benefit some guys in some circumstances.

Sometimes the essence and/or benefit of some products is lost when it's supposed positives are extracted out and in concentrate form. And, in that regard, we may NOT always realize that we lost some aspect of the product when we transmorphized it to that degree.

Also, my response here may also play into WestCoast's and Gio's earlier assertion(s) about perceived benefits in mixing up a guy's routine. A guy in fact, may get a temporary boost from something like a green powder - but I would remain skeptical in making green powder or any other processed "health product" part of my regular and ongoing practice - even if potentially, there may be a few short-term benefits in trying out something like that.

I don't care for "powdered" versions of food.

I prefer fresh vegetables and fruit over "green powder".

I don't understand how it could be fresh if its in "powder" form..?

How can it retain any of it nutrients..?

After a few weeks, fruits and veges lose most of their nutrients, right?

How many nutrients can it have if it sits on a shelf in a warehouse/store for months???

I don't trust that stuff.

Even most protein powder is garbage, I think. Better to eat fresh fish, eggs, chicken, beans, etc.

High end stuff is probably better but cheap powders are usually garbage.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm pretty sure Apple cider Vinegar is just based on Bro-Science.

At least, I hope it is..

Gio:
For whatever good it will do to attempt to keep our discussion of ACV in the more relevant thread, I have responded to you in the ACV thread – even though considerations of the pros and cons of ACV and juicing may overlap to some extent:

RE: Health: Juicing
This thread got me into juicing. Been juicing for about half a year now. Many thanks. I'm early 20ies so impact on my life should be less than 30somethings juicing. But building habits and routines can't be done early enough.

Just made a juice consisting of:

Beets
Kale
Ginger
Green apple
Cucumber
Lemon
Garlic
Celery

No idea about proportions. Yum!
