My daily go-to juice:
Kale, Greens (turnip, collard, etc), blueberries, strawberries, banana, flax seeds, spirulina.
Drink that for a week and you'll wake up feeling like Leonidas.
@Royale,
Your ingredients looks almost exactly the same as the shakes I've been making (minus the spirulina). Are you blending (like a VitaMix) or using a juicer? I have been using this type of mix and am concerned that I've been eating too much fruit with the VitaMix (whole banana plus berries...and then probably some similar portion of fruits later in the day).

Just made the first juice. A bigass beet, carrots and lemons and a tomato.
It tastes much better than expected and I think I'm going to get hooked by this.
I haven't eaten any carbs lately to get rid some bodyfat and I use to be a carb senstitive guy, so let's see how this will work out!
Found my grandmothers oldschool juicer from the 70's in the basement and it still does the job perfectly!

Have any of you guys tried making a juice for "pregaming"?
My thinking is one of those beet juice mixes could be good for energy, providing an antioxidant buffer for the toxins you're about to digest, and also get blood vessels opened up for fucking.
Thanks for all the advice on this thread by the way, I just started juicing and am pretty impressed already with the green juice. I think I'm going to be combining this with smoothies so that I have at least one or the other every day.

That's why I love this forum, zebra game, gaming indigenous women, and pregaming juicing!
I haven't read this whole thread so don't know if this has been mentioned before.
I do all my juicing on Sundays for the week, freeze them in the mason jars and pull one the night before, but I just figured out how to get extra juice from a lower end juicer (I have the Hamilton Beach Big mouth one).
After I had made all 6 of my containers today, instead of just throwing the pulp away I ran it through the juicer again. This yielded about 3/4 of a mason jar! That's almost 15% more juice for 1 more minute and no additional cost.

Has anyone been adding sprouts to their blender? I started recently and I've been busting Peter North-ish loads on girls ever since.

Ok guys. Been juicing now everyday for about three weeks.
How much juice are you guys drinking?
I've been drinking 0,5l in the morning. (Cucumber, ginger, broccoli, celery, spinach, kale)
And another 0,5l in the evening before workout ( beets, lemons, carrots, tomatoes)
I feel good, especially I can feel benefits from the beet juice.
But I'm wondering if I'm juicing too much. I have gained a few kg's in the last three weeks.
Note that I haven't changed anything in my diet, just added the juice.

Im doing about 300mL in the morning and another 300 at night. My go-to juice is:
3 celery, 1/2 large cuke, ~20 leaves of spinach.
Havent noticed any weight gains so far, but im feeling much better overall.

I got my juicer a couple of days ago, and preparing my first juice today. I'm hoping it will counter my drinking and help bolster my immune system.
I only drink beverages that I juice myself, from fruits and veggies straight from the farmers market I live next to. It's very good. I've experienced first hand the benefits of juicing, as I have a blood condition (a type hemoglobinopathy) that hinders how much oxygen my blood absorbs. Juicing has allowed me to compensate for this. It enhances the function of the blood like no other. I usually juice veggies high in nitric oxide like romaine lettuice and celery along with beets, carrots and an apple or two as a natural sweetner. I use the pulp as a main ingredient in baking cakes, so that get's used also.

I am having a hard time finding kale in my country. What would you guys say is a good substitute?

Google ANDI scale or Aggregate Nutrient Density Index scale. It is a chart created to give fruits and veggies a rating as to how many nutrients they have compared to calories and stuff like that.
Kale is 1000, the highest number. Collard greens, mustard greens, and other greens are also 1000. I think swiss chard is up there too.

If the only thing you've changed is adding the juice and you gained weight then it sounds like your liver may be reacting to it. Beets and carrots have high sugar content and when you extract that sugar from the solid form it essentially becomes almost the same as drinking a soda. You might try reducing those two ingedients

Extracting the sugar from carrots and beets is basically drinking soda? No. Not even close.

Hey Im definitely not a nutritionist or medical professional. But I have read that separating the sugar from the fiber speeds the absorption. See sample below.
As anyone who has ever made fresh juice knows, it takes several pounds of produce to produce 16 ounces of juice. And that's part of what makes juicing seem like such a healthy habit. We all know that fruits and vegetables are good for us. And we constantly hear that people are falling short of the recommended intake, which is 5 servings of vegetables and 2-4 servings of fruit. Fresh juice seems like the perfect solution.
Theoretically, you're getting the nutritional equivalent of at least a dozen servings of fruits and vegetable in every glass. The problem is that juicing also concentrates the natural sugars in fruits and vegetables while separating out all the fiber that would normally slow the absorption of sugars. If you drink the juice all by itself, those sugars will be quickly absorbed into your bloodstream.

(04-08-2014 09:09 AM)Doctor Wrote: In case anyone was interested, here is my experience with juicing and blood sugar levels.
Both the same conditions. Roughly 4 hrs after waking up and about a 12 hr fast except for coffee and probably about 15-20g of fats via coconut oil and whipping cream. Normal blood sugar 81. Sugar checked 30min after eating in both cases.
After eating a twix and cherry cobbler at roughly 60-70g of carbs my BS was 141.
After drinking half of a real V8 (the other half was frozen as I do this at work) my BS was 89. Maybe it would've been higher if I had the whole thing, but 95 or 100 maybe?
This is from a few pages earlier in this thread.
Yes, I didn't do this experiment with soda. But here is processed sugar and juice. One spikes my blood sugar 60pts and the other moved it my less than 10.
I thought that juice would be full of sugars too. The glucometer, however, doesn't make hypothetical assumptions about what my blood sugar should be after consuming juice.

^ Great comment, Doctor. That is the difference between mindlessly repeating what you read on the Internet and actually learning by doing.
Yes great comment doctor. Im sure that sample size and comprehensive study is worthy of publication in the AJM.
LOOK AT ANY NUTRIONAL LABEL. WHY IS THERE NO "recommended daily allowance of sugar" RDA on ANY of them
Sugar is what is making the US a nation of fat fucks
Look I'm not looking for a pissing match here. I was however trying to share what I believe to be information of value addressing Chaos' concerns re weight gain after starting to juice. I for one dont own a refractometer which is first tool often used to measure sugar in juice. A drop of juice is placed on a quartz surface at one end of the instrument, and you look through the sight glass on the other end. The sugar in the juice will cause light to bend at a certain angle, depending on the quantity. The refractometer measures this angle and contains a scale corresponding the the quantity of dissolved sugar in the mixture. The scale is typically given in °Brix measurement (% sucrose by mass – ie grams sucrose/100 g of solution). It is important to realize that this tool will only give you an accurate measure of your sugar when used in juice.
Since I dont own a refractometer I will defer to a chart published on the internet. It happens to be on the FDA's website so again I will defer to it's accuracy. If Chaos is drinking a half liter of juice twice a day then this might explain his weight gain.
You'll notice that carrots and beets top the list of sugar content,
Furthermore according to Dr Lester Lusting WHO HAS BEEN PUBLISHED in AJM (American Journal of Medicine) "The truth is that, though consuming sugar along with the fibres of fruit is better than without, these middle-class healthy drinks may be higher in sugar than the Ribena my mother was fooled into giving us children for our health.
And that, too, had more sugar in it than Coke.
Sugar is sugar – a simple chemical, and it makes little difference whether it’s crushed from an organic, hand-picked fruit or fracked in a factory out of corn and beet. And fructose is just another of the monosaccharides that make sugar, though it’s the one with a friendly Latin-derived name. In fact fructose is the key to all sugar – it makes it taste sweet. Table sugar is half glucose, half fructose. The high-fructose syrups the drinks manufacturers use are probably – they won’t say – made of 55% fructose: more sweetness for the sugar load"

The sugar in juice is not the same as processed sugar.
That has been the experience of every man here.
Go drink a Coke. See how you feel. Get that sugar rush and crash.
Then go drink a green juice. See how you feel. Go measure your blood glucose.
This isn't tough stuff.
Go live in the world rather than being a sheep who believes every stupid thing he reads on the Internet.

For starters, google Dr. Robert Lustig, the writer of the guardian article. Tell me you want to listen to dietary advice from him.
Sugar is not making the US fat. It is contributing, but it is not the only cause. People making claims like that are looking for attention and book sales. You don't get fat by eating less calories than you're burning.
That article
"Countries that have greater access to sugar have higher rates of diabetes". That published correlation is less scientific than my simple "study".
Also, at the bottom he states "Fruit juice in cartons has had all the fibre squeezed out of it, making its sugars more dangerous", that's not what this thread is about.
When you read articles like this, don't be sucked in by how the "facts" are represented. Read how things are said and how they are phrased. Look for the biases that everyone has.
The quick and dirty website you linked to first. She has a bunch of letters after her name (MS, CNS). Checking blood sugar is a simple experiment, why didn't she do it? Why doesn't the FDA do it? This doesn't require a refractometer, probably everyone knows someone that has a glucometer.
Why doesn't anyone explicitly say "Look, the insulin response in the body between juicing fruits and veggies and drinking soda".
An Apple, according to google, has 19g sugar and 4.4g fiber. 4.4g of fiber doesn't magically erase 19g sugar. But when was the last time you saw someone that got fat sitting on the couch, watching TV, eating a bag of apples?
Yeah, the "study" was not prefect. I think the significant difference in insulin response between the two is important though.
However...
Why don't you run the same test and prove me wrong? Fast, and then drink a coke. And then fast, and drink a fresh juice.
kosko · 2014-07-25 06:52:00 · #497
Not all sugars are equal. It's to simple to blanket then all together. Your body will break down fructose and glucose differently. Fibre in fruit helps you limit the amount you eat. Your full of a few apples, nobody is eating a whole bushel of them but it's easy to down a whole carton or apple juice like nothing.
The absorption factor is real. HFCS and other sugar composite blends waste no time in getting out into a system. A common trick for Bodybuilders before a show when they are completely flat, carb, and water starve is to drink a can of coke as the sugar dilates the blood vessels as the body almost immediately puts that simple sugar into action.

Still the question remains.
- Has anyone gained weight of juicing (too much)?
I'm just curious of what caused my weight gain and if I'm drinking more than other juicers here.
MikeCFa and other juicers.
-How much juice are you drinking on a daily basis?
Doctor · 2014-07-25 07:55:00 · #499
@Chaos
When I started juicing in April (or march or sometime in the spring) I do recall gaining a few lbs, but I wasn't monitoring my weight all that closely.
However, I will notice 3-5lbs differences in weight in the mirror and I didn't notice anything different. I attributed it to a vitamin deficiency or something. I also am probably 10lbs lower than that now so any gain I had wasn't permanent gain.
You could try a smaller ingredient list and see if that helps. I don't get overly obsessed trying to get X amount of juice or try to put X number of different things in.
The juice that I drink most days is 4-6 carrots, a bunch of kale, and an orange. Probably makes 12oz? Maybe a little more? If I have something else available I throw it is (beets, celery, anything from the garden), but I don't go out of my way to always have extras besides the carrots, kale, and orange.
My girlfriend and I basically drink carrot/beet juice every morning for breakfast.
Both skinny.
I would love to see the guy who got fat from carrots and beets.
I once had a friend's father, who was pushing 300lbs after a lifetime of obvious bad eating, ask me if I was OK with eating carrots because of the carbs in them. I couldn't really believe it...
Similarly, some chunky girl (friend of a friend) that I spent an afternoon with questioned my order of carrot juice at a market. "Is carrot juice even good for you?" She had just eaten a bagel with cream cheese...
