- Has anyone gained weight of juicing (too much)?
I'm just curious of what caused my weight gain and if I'm drinking more than other juicers here.
MikeCFa and other juicers.
-How much juice are you drinking on a daily basis?
I generally juice Carrots. I throw in whatever else I have around, beets, limes, lemons, ginger, celery, oranges, turnips, anything really. But the bulk of my juice is always carrots.
I am very skinny. Too skinny, I wish I was 30 pounds heavier. But my dedication to eating real healthy foods basically makes it impossible to gain weight. I'd have to start eating McDonald's every day to gain any weight it seems like.
I usually have 16-24 ounces of juice in the mornings. Some days I'll buy an extra juice when I'm out if I feel like it.
I never would "count calories" with juice though. It's like making sure you don't eat too many strawberries or blueberries. Yes they have sugar but come on, who ever got fat from fruit? It's a crazy idea that the sugar from fruits and vegetables is what's going to do you in. Coke and cookies, yes. Carrots and Bananas, no.

16-32 ounces.
No I've never gained weight.
I have posted my fasting insulin and fasting blood glucose level many times.
My fasting insulin is 4.7 (that is excellent) and my fasting glucose is 83 (also very good).
If sugar gave people diabetes, why do I have such great blood work?

I remain somewhat torn about all of this discussion. It does seem quite logical that there are other good effects from the consumption of fruit (even the juicing of it), besides its affect on blood glucose levels. Also, frequently, there are other additives to sodas, besides sugar or high fructose syrup or aspertame.
Surely guys can measure their own effects (blood sugars, feelings, weight and mirror), and it does seem to be the case (and it is in the literature too) that fructose does NOT affect blood glucose levels in the same way as sugar b/c fructose is processed in the liver rather than deposited in the blood. In that regard, we may get deceived into thinking that there is little to no negative affect from the consumption of fruits. Nonetheless, since fructose is processed directly in the liver, it has some similar effects as alcohol, and A person could get fatty liver (liver disease) from over consuming fruits in the similar way as over-consuming alcohol.
I certainly do NOT know the answer, but I do NOT only go by my feelings - b/c in my thinking, there is a combination of feelings and learning from literature and the experiences of other guys that remains important in questions about the extent to which guys may lose benefits when consuming high quantities of fruits (especially in the juiced form b/c juicing does allow much greater quantities of consumption as compared to eating the same fruits in their whole forms).

Carrots are awesome to juice. They're incredibly cheap, and they're full of nutrients. You can even get a chunk of your Vitamin K from carrots.

I don't have a juicer, but I have a really good blender. If I just blend all of the fruits and veggies together and then put the mush output in a strainer and let it sit for a while, would I get the same effect? I don't care how long it takes. If it accomplishes the same thing I'd rather do that. But obviously if that wouldn't work for a juicing diet, I'd rather spring for a juicer.
I'm starting a 10-14 day juice fast because I was in China for a month and gained 7 pounds because Chinese food is fucking delicious.

^^
I tried it this morning. I sliced an apple and put 30 baby carrots in the blender. I blended them, and then put the resultant mush in a spaghetti strainer over a measuring cup. I smushed it down and sure enough-- juice went into the cup. After about, oh, 10 minutes total I was left with about 12 ounces of juice.
It was delicious. A full juice fast is going to be a piece of cake, it's like drinking heaven. Also I felt totally full after juice 12 oz of juice.

Also try sweet potatoes and yams. At first they don't seem like they'd be good to juice, but they are. They're great tasting and pack more beta carotene than carrots.

That's how they do it in the ubiquitous juice bars in Brazil. They add some ice though in the blender.

Alright lads, I've read through this thread and I've decided to buy a juicer - an Omega J probably.
I will report in with the results.
Two goals: better skin, and scupper the last of my stomach flab.
I have good skin already but I have a history of it acting up. I use creams now which mostly take care of the redness and make it glow actually (combined with a pretty good diet and lifestyle). I have read here that juicing makes the skin glow. Will mine turn yet more luminescent?
The second goal, the stomach flab, will take some figuring out. Recently I've been fiddling with 5:2 intermittent fasting. How will I incorporate that with juicing?

Since I last posted Ive been on holiday for three weeks and didnt bring my juicer with me. So Ive only been juicing regularly for the last week. So far Ive been making 1 or 2 juices a day, alternating between the fat, sick and nearly dead juice and the preworkout beet juice. (Both recipes on fit juice:
http://fit-juice.com/mean-green-juice-re...arly-dead/
http://fit-juice.com/beet-juice-better-w...etter-sex/
So far Ive noticed an energy boost after I drink the juices, and my bacne has completely cleared up (it was mild/ moderate to begin with). I think that the acne/ blemishes on my face are also beginning to fade, but obviously it takes time for the skin to repair itself. (I cant make a fair comparison until Ive been juicing for 6 to 8 weeks).
I think one reason Im enjoying immediate benefits from juicing, is that even though I eat very clean and healthily, I didnt eat that much vegetables. (Mainly lean meat and carbs, no sugary drinks, but not many phytonutrients). So I was probably deficient in a lot of the nutrients that Im now recieving.
I know that everyone posting on this thread is likely to already be a convert, but if youre just browsing, I implore you to try jucing. I put it off for a while, but as soon as I started I was glad I did. The juices taste much better than expected, are fun to make and great for you, (with almost immediate, tangible benefits). As well as this taking the initiative and starting juicing its just an extension of the general attitude that forum members should have. Every day you read about a bunch of things that can improve your life. It may take a bit of effort to initially implement them, but you'll be glad you did.

What are you guys doing with the pulp? I read through the thread and saw some guys use it for cooking which seems like a good idea. I hate to toss it, and would rather get something out of it.
My go to juice at the moment consists of
200 g Kale and/or Spinach
2 Beetroots
3 Carrots
2 Apples
3 sticks of celery
1/3 Cucumber
I've been using this recipe for a few weeks now and have noticed that my skin is better than usual (i have quite bad eczema). I haven't noticed any other major differences but ill keep on going as its a good way to get some vegetables into my diet. Thanks to Mike CF for starting the thread as id never of even thought of juicing vegetables in the first place.

Here's one tip I discovered for the pulp (I use an Omega masticating juicer):
Juice it again.
Once my juice bucket is full, I empty it into storage containers, then I take the pulp bucket and juice all the pulp pieces.
You'd be surprised how much extra juice you get out of it, it's well worth doing a 2nd round.
Is there any truth about juices losing all their nutrients when you juice vegetables in a fast spinning juicer compared to a single gear masticating juicer?
Any opinions on smoothies? I make fruit and veggie smoothies in a vitamix. There is obviously no added sugar or anything like that (same as juicing). Simply put the fruits or veggies you are making a smoothie of and there's no pulp leftover. Sometimes I will add half a cup of water to make it more juice like. I would reckon that it's just as healthy as juicing or am I wrong? Thoughts/opinions?

Not really. "Cold-pressed" is a label that plays on the anxiety about "heating" your juice with a centrifuge blade instead of pressing out the juice with a masticator/auger.
However I've never seen any literature showing significant nutritional differences.
Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. If the choice is a centrifuge-made juice versus a manufactured bottle drink, go with the former.

No, and there's also no truth to when people say you have to drink your juice immediately or that it oxidizes and you lose all the nutrients. I read a study on this once, and the conclusion was that the juice will go bad (taste/texture/mold) before there is any significant nutrient loss.

Smoothies are just as good as juicing. All that really matters is that you're consuming fruit and vegetables. Blending and juicing helps us do this. One keeps all the fiber, the other removes most of the fiber (leaving some soluble fiber).
I use a nutri bullet to get my juice fix.
This doesn't extract any pulp it just sort of blends it all together into a thick slush. I mostly use frozen vegetables so I just tend to pound it down like a thick ice smoothie.
How well does a machine like this retain the fiber? Am I correct that it is the removal of all the pulp and bringing the mixture to a watery juice is diminishing the fibre?

I'm about to invest in a new juicer.
Have you guys any experience of this Philips HR 1871 model?
It's big and has quite decent reviews.

Your last question isn't a grammatical sentence, but if you aren't draining or extracting any part of the fruit stuff and throwing it away, then the fiber should still be there when you drink it.
