The current wave of black Britons you see arrived in the UK in the 50s and 60s after the short Austrian geezer turned Europe upside down. Policies back then strictly stated "No blacks, no Irish and no dogs" for those seeking room and board. Europeans are a slicker bunch. Rudebwoy has shown you lot the blackface saga in Holland. When one tries to complain about that, people will laugh it off and say "why are you getting in uproar over a bit of fun?"
British hooligans are the worst in the world, you go to any football (soccer) game which is by far the biggest sport in Europe and you have fans making simian sounds and throwing banana skins on the pitch to taunt black players. This practice is also done by the home fans. On mainland Europe, some will heat up coins and toss them onto you so that the hot copper burns the exposed human flesh. Can you imagine James Harding getting a banana tossed at him during a home game?
Remember that the laws in Europe are not as stifling and strict as the US. That taunting stuff will usually be laughed off when reported. Your claim about the States is the psychological baggage and I'm by no means downplaying that. My question is, for the black American guys on here and most are born in the 80s and later, when have you directly experienced the brunt of a Jim Crow law or slavery?
Not too trivialise it but I can match a majority of all accounts in the 80s with a British equivalent. My doing so just illustrates that it's sadly not unique to US of A.
Whoa there Moma.... Jim Crow and Slavery may have ended but racism never did. I and many other blacks born in the 80s or earlier can speak about racism easily. I spoke about this before with you and Rude on the show. I have been kicked out of a classroom and called a nigger by a teacher before (She wasn't fired or disciplined either). I was chased 2 different times by Klansmen and jumped by one group of them. One of those times I was even with my mother.
Guys I know around my age have even been refused service at a McDonalds in East Texas in the late 90s. Young blacks born in the late 90s and 2000s probably won't see shit like this, but don't think for a minute that because Slavery and Jim Crow ended decades ago, that the lasting effects of slavery and Jim Crow just magically went away.
In 2009 I was house hunting with my exwife in an area I do not like that is known for having too many ignorant ass rednecks. I went inside the model home and started talking to a sales guy about the homes they were building in that area. A white couple walked into the model home and then the guy said to me and my exwife, "Excuse me, but I need to go talk to some real customers." Then went over to them. Needless to say I did not buy in that area as a result. I stay in the multicultural parts of Houston for a reason. Outside of the actual city and you have to put up with bullshit like this sometimes. Sometimes rednecks in big trucks will try to run you off the roads outside of Houston. Not sure if it is always racism but you cannot help but wonder. It's still ridiculous.
I have a really good Dutch friend and he is definitely racist. He has said plenty of fucked up shit that is not politically correct at all. The only reason why I bothered to stay friends with him is because he would make fun of Mexicans, Scottish guys, and Asians too. He loves Japanese things and cars and all kinds of non-white things. He loves rap too. Once I asked him about all this shit, and he told me that is just the way they are. They have no filter and will make fun of anything. As years went by and I came into contact with more Dutch people and saw what they do internationally it started to make sense. They have a fucked up/dark sense of humor. It really isn't that funny, but what can you do? If he was not such a kind-hearted guy that would do almost anything to help me out, I probably would not fuck with him.
Blackface and bananas would not rile up a black man my father's age at all, but a Black Lives Matter/Millennial black person would literally go berserk on the spot. It can be harder for someone that has never had Klansmen try to kick his ass walking in a neighborhood with no one else around, have the thickskin to let a banana thrown slide. That just goes to show you how much better things have gotten.
That said, anyone around my age that grew up in the deep South, may know what real racism is. Don't think for a minute that we have no idea just because shit is much more lax than the 60s. James Byrd Jr. was dragged to death in East Texas in 1998, not 1960. When did something like that happen in the UK? Crazy stuff really did not stop until the Politically Correctness wave started. Only then would anyone yelling nigger at others result in getting fired, lambasted on TV media, and followed by media trucks for weeks. Nowadays the only people getting away with yelling nigger at people are protesters/tea party/etc. at political rallies. Even then some of them get doxxed and people send photos and videos to their places of employment. The Information Age has changed everything, now that we are into the thick of it. If that teacher that called me a nigger did that today, I or others would have recorded it on iPhones or reported it in mass, and she would have lost her state teaching license within a few weeks. She would have even been on CNN. I think my mother was the only person that complained to the district and the state back then. Nothing happened to her at all and I had to go to a different school... Some food for thought.
I think the racism in Europe is problematic for blacks there due to the lack of numbers of black minorities. How many people can flood the street over a blackface incident? Over here too many are able to protest and shut down some shit economically (for example Alabama buses and business feeling the pinch). Also, whites there can downplay it down to just speech stuff. When was the last time British people dragged any blacks outside their homes for a beating/hanging/etc. Over here racist speech often turned into violence, so we are more sensitive to it on stopping the hate speech before shit gets out of hand, because of the history and culture of the US.
Europe has been more homogeneous Scandinavian/Aryan/Anglo/Teuton/etc. than American ever was. Black people have been here since the beginning of the country and even before that. Europe stopped all kinds of slavery/slave trading and indentured servitude long before America did (The French ended it in 1300s for example). No European country had 600,000+ people get killed over slaves in a stupid civil war (I know it was more about state's rights but slavery had alot to do with those states rights).
It's hard to compare European racism to American racism in a tit for tat style comparison. You have to look at alot of different factors such as history, societal structure, geography, political system (style of democracy/monarchy/etc.), economics, etc. A KKK guy here hates blacks for very personal and even religious reasons, whereas some Europeans hate minorities because they consume jobs and social entitlements. It's just much more nuanced than a surface level comparison.
