I think Royce Da 5'9 arguably had album of the year so far. Extremely solid record. Here's a posse cut from the album:

It's very unfortunate. The young generation is starting to drop like flies already. Earlier this year Fredo Santana passed due to the excessive lean use. RIP to everyone dying including XXXTentacion most recently.

RE: Rap/Hip-Hop Thread
I've been into hip-hop since the 90s and I am finally an old man.

The industry is now completely corrupt with no hip-hop heads in positions of power.

It used to be if some faggot with pink dreadlocks and a penis tattooed on the face (all the rappers that have come out last year or two on a mainstream level) with no lyrics came out the gatekeepers (older or more established hip hop artists/label honchoes etc) would have said "you are a fucking faggot, no money for you put the microphone down."

3 years ago I was fine with the state of hip-hop. Yeah lyrics had taken a downturn but beats keep innovating, flow is ok, it bangs, whatever.

I can't get into openly gay rappers like these new dudes though.

When I saw the following I laughed and though Fat Joe was crazy, not laughing now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdaPDftAdMc

RE: Rap/Hip-Hop Thread
Man I have been disillusioned since 2001, when I noticed compared to the previous millennium quality had dropped off a cliff. There just wasn't that "magic" like in the 90s golden era. There were exceptions. Stillmatic was one. This isn't just nostalgia, I mean objective quality.

I don't even classify today's so-called "rap" as "hip-hop". I don't know what it is. "Trap music" when you're also getting high from your own supply? When this guy XXXTentacion was slain the radio played a song called "Sad". It had 1 verse and the rest was basic instrumental or chorus repeating itself, none of it had any special brilliance to talk of. Yet this guy topped billboard, and was very popular before his death, prior to the obvious spike in streams (now converted to "sales" by some formula in today's format). Even the cashmeousside girl is making an album and releasing videos pretty much sounding like a female version of a lot of these 2:30 song trap music "rappers". Her favorite artist "Kodak Black" who is regarded highly for his substance/"real" lyrics, I heard his album "Painting Pictures". The best song was the first, and lyrically that was nothing special whatsoever, the only reason it resonated was the genuinely heartfelt emotion of his missing his friends behind bars (huge sentences, not without good reason so you can imagine the company he keeps). If this is among the best today's "rap" has to offer then I have been correct in ignoring pretty much everything in that category for over a decade. Even a few of the veterans who have been around since even the late 80s or early 90s still producing the occasional album now? I check it out and it's just... nothing. It's not their fault, they are tapped out of creative juices, so why try to flog a dead horse? It just tarnishes their legacy.

Combined with smartphones, today's generation being raised on the "rap" of today must have brain cells dying at an alarming rate. Maybe if I get a lobotomy or something I might fit in a bit more with my tastes.

I always thought about Biggie Smalls and why he is considered by many as the greatest rapper who ever lived. This is because Ready To Die and Life After Death were both classics. The third "album" was just a way for Diddy to make money from Biggie's death as Biggie would never have let that get released had he been alive. But I know if Biggie had survived until today, he would have released some duds, thus lowering his average. Similar to Nas. I think Jay-Z is overrated so I already consider him having tons of duds and not being anywhere near Biggie's level. Speaking of Fat Joe this is a veteran who has consistently put out good quality albums, no classics or brilliant albums as a whole, but good albums, with a dud or two in between, but as for longevity and his career as a whole, Fat Joe is hugely underrated and overlooked in my opinion. His first independent release in 2006 "Me Myself And I" was fire. Make It Rain was the lead single and topped charts but songs like "Damn" and "Breathe and Stop" were fire in 2006, a time when it was clear rap had past its golden age over half a decade ago.

The only reason I heard about these "rappers" like Kodak Black or 6ix9ine (wtf) or cashmeousside girl's attempts was because of this XXXTentacion's murder. Apparently some of the idiots snitching on themselves by posting about it on "The Gram"... online attention whoring clearly has no boundaries. The retarded music is a cause and effect of the retarded social media obsessed smartphone zombie culture the youth is raised in nowadays.

Imagine cashmeousside girl or some idiot with rainbow hair and a giant 69 tattooed on his face trying to come out when Biggie released Juicy and Ready To Die? In those days there were actually both musical and moral restrictions in place.

I'm a youngster and I consider most of rap as pure garbage.

People like Migos, Kodak, Post Malone, 6ix9ine and even drake don't enthuse me. Just beat. No lyricism, no depth. Just shallow bonk smoking paraphernalia.

I stick to the ones that make sense.

Joyner Lucas is a favorite. He takes the lyricism of Nas and the speed and rush of Eminem and fuses it into a banger. I particularly loved his mix tape, 508-507-2207. Ultrasound, Sorry, Lovely, Winter Blues were on repeat. Even his renditions of Gucci Gang, Look Alive and Bank Account are bangers. He gives me hope that this generation of rappers are not totally gone.

J. Cole. This is the modern Nas. His contemplative lyrics, flow and hooks are amazing. 4 your Eyez Only was on repeat. I liked how he was able to switch up his style in his latest album, KOD. ATM, KOD, Motiv8, Photograph and 1985 were on repeat. Great rapper. Great style.

Lil Wayne. One of my favorites. Dude's practically the embodiment of the complete rapper. Lyrical monster, pun king, flow god and somehow manages to say nonsense and make you love it. His mix tape series are always playing in my phone. His consistent improvement and his work ethic is anathema to this current stock of 'SoundCloud rappers' . Now that Birdman has settled it with Wayne, we await the greatest album in modern times, 'Carter V'

LOL. People debate Lil Wayne a lot back & forth. I also wasn't a huge Lil Wayne stan. He's a decent artist but in some ways he represented the transition from the more classic hip hop era to the trap rap of today. At least he knew how to spit decent bars though.

A lot of today's trap music youth look up to Lil Wayne as their godfather heheheh. He also influenced them with the horrifying practice of sipping on lean (cough syrup - promethazine with codeine, mixed with Sprite & optional Jolly Rancher candy). Extremely toxic for the health & probably another reason why today's rendition of rap overall took a downturn.

There were the odd gay looking antics too like the picture of him kissing his boss / manager, rapper Baby. I mean, who came up with that unnecessary shit, lol?

RE: Rap/Hip-Hop Thread
Here's a trap song I actually enjoy. In this tune Kevin Gates is educating us aspiring dealmakers & red pill game aficionados to keep at least two phones on you. If you are running a business in any sort of capacity you can relate to this. If you've been trying to juggle social media & a variety of female contacts you can certainly relate to this as well hahah.

Really trap music when it comes down to it can be like a weird hybrid of R&B and slowed down EDM beats in a way more than actual hip hop.

Kevin Gates - 2 Phones

I mentioned in the 'post your favourite rappers' thread that Royce was in my top 5. For me personally, of course. He's basically as good as Eminem, with a very similar Detroit style. He just lacks some of the artistic creativity, commercial backing, and perhaps hook writing that made Eminem so successful (and skin colour novelty).

Royce da 5'9 should work on his beats or get a good producer to work with. I heard his latest album, 'Book of Ryan' and was somewhat disappointed. The beats were lacking.

Sucks Jayz and Kanye seem to have fallen out. This latest Jayz/B CD sucks ass. Wish we could at least get a few more Ye and Jayz jams. Come to think of it, has Jayz done anything in the last few years that was good and wasnt produced by Ye?

Today's hip-hop is a means to spread faggotry among black males. They turned this masculine genre of music into a caricature of consumerism and pussy pedestalization. It's all about bitches, drugs, and material stuff. No deep message whatsoever. Hip-hop has turned from a political movement into corporate advertising campaign where everyone brags about their guccis and versaces. Fuck this gay world.

Because it's a big risk if the song isn't a hit, those RnB singers are expensive and won't tour with artists below their level.

You think Rihanna is gonna tour with Royce?
Also, Pusha did feature Chris Brown on Sweet Serenade, the results were underwhelming.

Thoughts on 21Savage?

I don't listen to rap or follow the culture but at a glance it's all about impoverished black youth looking for aspirational figures to imitate. How a laughably skinny (underweight?) rapper who got cucked by a washed up buimbo can be savage is beyond me.

Hahah yeah. Basically one of the more slightly tolerable modern mumble trap rappers. He probably won't get shot because I don't think he talks too much trash. Plus he is wisely trying to crossover a little bit into the mainstream & capture some of those dollars (ie. his hit collaboration with Post Malone, "Rockstar").

This is an overlooked album cut by Nas. Still powerful to this day. Produced by DJ Premier. A Simple Sample loop that still hits:

And I'm a big fan of the original samples, so here you go:

Start at 33:07

Other samples off that Ahmad Jamal album:

Ghetto Child (2:59)

Gang Starr - Illest Brother

Misdemeanor (0:08)

Gang Starr - Soliloquy of Chaos

Don't Misunderstand (1:24)

Jeru The Damaja - One Day

Pastures (1:09)

Jay-Z - Feelin' It

MASH Theme (2:33)

Fabolous Ft. Young Jeezy - You Know

"A happy man is a happy everybody else in his life."

"Ladies if you want to make your man happy, think about what makes you happy and do exactly the opposite."

"Hey how you doin' and I hope you know that I'm an upgrade for your stupid daughter." - Patrice O'Neal

Good looking out on the Nas joint. Yeah I remember that one (I Gave You Power produced by DJ Premier). I think it got overlooked because It Was Written was panned as a far more commercial album (even though it really wasn't too glossed up) than Illmatic. A lot of people might have only caught the bigger singles back then.
