I agree but don't think owning a decent-sized home to raise a family is mindless consumerism. That's just a high standard of living in America that we should try to maintain if we can.

I think the problem with mortgages is that investors are still screwing with the US housing market. Home prices are still inflated, they have not yet reverted to the stable prices they were before the subprime crisis.

I think immigration harms the housing market too but I have no data to prove that.
