Trump is too alpha to let anything get to him, because this was essentially a passive-aggressive beta move by Fallon. Trying to embarasses the alpha by coming in as a submissive nice guy, but with bad intentions. Anonymous Bosch has written about these situations and how you need to call out the passive aggressiveness. Trump surprisingly is simply not stumped by this, the alpha is too damn high. Try to imagine someone else but Trump doing this, Cruz, Rubio, they'd look like school boys getting bullied (which it is), but Trump comes out more looking like indulging a child, than getting amogged.
I think a warning is in order though, don't try this at home.

Trump does not force reporters to go to his conferences, the media gets invited to events all the time, they just select what will give them ratings.
I like how he play them, live TV is expensive and all these people, satellite signal, and time cost lots of money. I would say the networks lost millions in a few minutes of trolling.

The more people I meet and talk about how Trump uses persuasion tactics like overshooting and then negotiating down, the more I find they are...persuaded, especially when I say I'm not trying to persuade you to vote for Trump. One guy I met today (black guy), said that he couldn't believe the Muslim comment, but that banning people from terrorist regions made total sense.
This is all the trifecta neuro-affective principle I think - resonance, redefinition, resistance.
I think there's far more people to be persuaded for Trump than you inherently think.
As an aside, this kind of indirect game works very well in general. I think I might need to go more indirect in my approaches. My problem is finding a good all-purpose opener that I don't have to consciously think about.

I know that all forum Trumpers -- and the entire centipede clan -- are feeling giddy about the movement in the polls, and gleeful about T's trolling of the media today. What I'm about to say is likely to fall on deaf ears -- but I'm going to say it anyway, because as much or more than anyone here I want T to actually WIN -- to actually defeat some of the worst and nastiest people that have ever lived and make them suffer from the stunning rebuke of a Trump victory. While no one can ever take away the great joy, laughter and comedy that Trump has brought into the lives of so many men, he who laughs last laughs best. There is no joy that compares with the joy of actually winning, and that is what I want, more than anything else.
Therefore I must say the following. I see this period as one of great risk to Trump's winning chances -- a risk, and indeed a likelihood, of Trump and his campaign becoming complacent and squandering his very fragile gains. Let me explain why.
It is very important to realize -- and I don't think this is sufficiently realized by anyone on the forum -- that Trump owes his gains in the polls to one and only one person -- Kellyanne Conway. Trump stopped hemorrhaging support and started slowly gaining in mid August when KC became his campaign manager and forced him -- beginning with a great series of speeches that week, culminating in his Charlotte speech, the best of the campaign -- to stick to the teleprompter at all times.
This teleprompter discipline, and Trump's willingness to listen to KC and stay on cue, always, put a stop to the endless series of gaffes that the media -- always spurred on by the devilish and uniquely important Sopan Deb, the CBS reporter who covers Trump and combs his every utterance for grains of useful mischief -- would relentlessly feast on. Trump stopped being the story, and the media turned its attention to Hillary Clinton, because it had to be turned somewhere, and because Trump was failing to provide them with any material.
The spotlight on Hillary Clinton -- her foundation, her email scandal, and more recently her "deplorables" gaffe and her 9/11 collapse -- is the sole reason that the polls have moved in Trump's direction, first gradually over the course of a few weeks, and then more precipitously since last weekend; the more attention shines on the HAG, the less she is liked. And -- again -- the only reason that she became the center of sustained negative attention was that Trump stuck to the script, ably written by Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller, but, far more importantly, ruthlessly ENFORCED by Kellyanne Conway. They gave the media nothing -- they gave Sopan Deb nothing -- and so they slunk away and grimly wrote about the emails.
It is very important to note that the current upshot of all the favorable movement in the polls is a race which is much tighter than it was before -- NOT one which Trump is "winning". I have no desire to argue here about the polls and the merits of different aggregators, so let me simply assure all the readers that my ability to understand the polls and to evaluate statistical information is considerable; that I have looked at and examined the relevant material very carefully; and that my conclusion, which I'm afraid is an authoritative one, is that even now Clinton likely still has a slight lead of perhaps just under 2 points and would likely eke out a narrow popular vote and electoral college win if the election were held today. I say "likely" because no one can say this with certainty; but that is the best reading of all the available information by someone who knows how to read it.
What is far more important than this, though, is that Trump is at risk of squandering these very fragile gains because he is beginning to abandon the teleprompter discipline that had served him so well. Trump is a happy guy who loves thinking that he is smarter and knows better than his advisers. He loves to be relaxed; this is what all true Trump lovers love about him and what some of the worst people in the world hate about him with a grim passion. But his relaxation -- his tendency to get fat and happy and dumb when the polls are going his way and everything looks good -- is going to prove his undoing unless immediate action is taken to reinstate the teleprompter discipline that SAVED his campaign.
There were the first signs of it in the Canton rally a few days ago. As a Trump fan and honorary centipede, I loved that rally; but I could not help noting the danger signs. Trump was beginning to go off prompter for extended periods; he was improvising and VERY happy to do so, like a drunk that finally hit the bottle after an enforced month off the sauce. The happiness gave him a great glow, and it was impossible not to respond to it; but -- as indeed with the drunk -- disaster was just around the corner and you could see it in the faces of the WHITE WOMEN in the crowd, always the most important ones to watch. They turned from loving smiles to tense and nervous ones as the off-prompter excursions became increasingly wild; it was subtle but you could sense that nervousness just beneath all the buzz. They knew that Trump was itching terribly to go off the reservation; and they knew, correctly, that disaster could strike at any moment.
Trump skirted that disaster in Canton; he came close on a couple of occasions which were -- of course -- noted by the indefatigable Sopan Deb (once when he joked that he's working harder than anyone and therefore doesn't feel sorry for people who are not getting a raise; again, in the same riff, when he referred to himself as "performing" in front of crowds rather than speaking); but these were just not enough to take off, and the wound from the HAG's collapse was still too fresh. But skirting disaster in Canton only encouraged Trump's worst instincts. And we saw the first results of this today in Trump's rally in Miami.
In this rally, Trump made his first major gaffe since mid August, riffing about how Hillary's bodyguards should no longer be armed and stop protecting her -- then "let's see what happens to her". Twitter is going crazy with glee about this: Trump again -- supposedly -- implied that perhaps Clinton should be assassinated. This is an opportunity to spend another new cycle focusing negative attention on Trump and his antics, and away from HRC and hers.
This gaffe -- as such -- is not likely to cost Trump very much, it just doesn't have enough legs. But it is a small loss, caused solely by Trump going off the prompter. He hasn't had one of these in weeks, and in an election as close as this one is -- one that Trump is still trailing in by a hair's breadth -- he cannot really afford ANY of them. Most importantly, if he continues to play the complacent drunk and go off the prompter, such gaffes are guaranteed to multiply and swallow more and more news cycles -- and that, in turn, is guaranteed to cost Trump his recent fragile gains. Trump's enemies have almost despaired of this actually happening; they feared that he would simply listen to Kellyanne the rest of the way, and then -- who knows -- the unthinkable might happen and he might just win. You can sense a terrible anticipation among them tonight as they realize that prompter discipline has been increasingly abandoned. They cannot believe their good luck and are virtually salivating at the opportunities that lie ahead.

Here is what Trump must do if he's to have a real chance at winning this election:
He must get back on the teleprompter wagon and stay on it. Nothing matters more than that. Stick to script; deliver his message, bask in the applause, and leave. Give the media hyenas NOTHING.
Beyond that:
-- Only offer limited and quite anodyne remarks about his opponent.
-- Be relentlessly positive, calm, composed and often smiling from here on in. He must remember: scowl less; smile more. He has a great smile and women love it. USE IT.
-- Limit rallies and speeches. They are of relatively limited use at this point. He must have some but his base is already fired up -- and insufficient to win the election. It's all about making himself acceptable and plausible to Republican leaning white women in swing states; the risk/reward calculation from the rallies is just not good enough.
-- He must do well enough in the debates; he doesn't need to "crush" Hillary -- which he will not -- nor does he need to try. He needs to appear calm, thoughtful, positive, serious and presidential. I'll have more to say about this later.
That is all. If he does all these things going forward he's got a real chance; otherwise, he will lose and he might lose surprisingly badly. All the recent gains in the polls are fragile; they are at the sufferance of voters in swing states who are turned off by the HAG and are willing to give Trump a chance, as long as he seems not too crazy and basically plausible. That sufferance can be revoked in a heartbeat, and if Trump keeps going off the reservation, so it will.

There were the first signs of it in the Canton rally a few days ago. As a Trump fan and honorary centipede, I loved that rally; but I could not help noting the danger signs. Trump was beginning to go off prompter for extended periods; he was improvising and VERY happy to do so, like a drunk that finally hit the bottle after an enforced month off the sauce. The happiness gave him a great glow, and it was impossible not to respond to it; but -- as indeed with the drunk -- disaster was just around the corner and you could see it in the faces of the WHITE WOMEN in the crowd, always the most important ones to watch. They turned from loving smiles to tense and nervous ones as the off-prompter excursions became increasingly wild; it was subtle but you could sense that nervousness just beneath all the buzz. They knew that Trump was itching terribly to go off the reservation; and they knew, correctly, that disaster could strike at any moment.
Trump skirted that disaster in Canton; he came close on a couple of occasions which were -- of course -- noted by the indefatigable Sopan Deb (once when he joked that he's working harder than anyone and therefore doesn't feel sorry for people who are not getting a raise; again, in the same riff, when he referred to himself as "performing" in front of crowds rather than speaking); but these were just not enough to take off, and the wound from the HAG's collapse was still too fresh. But skirting disaster in Canton only encouraged Trump's worst instincts. And we saw the first results of this today in Trump's rally in Miami.
In this rally, Trump made his first major gaffe since mid August, riffing about how Hillary's bodyguards should no longer be armed and stop protecting her -- then "let's see what happens to her". Twitter is going crazy with glee about this: Trump again -- supposedly -- implied that perhaps Clinton should be assassinated. This is an opportunity to spend another new cycle focusing negative attention on Trump and his antics, and away from HRC and hers.
This gaffe -- as such -- is not likely to cost Trump very much, it just doesn't have enough legs. But it is a small loss, caused solely by Trump going off the prompter. He hasn't had one of these in weeks, and in an election as close as this one is -- one that Trump is still trailing in by a hair's breadth -- he cannot really afford ANY of them. Most importantly, if he continues to play the complacent drunk and go off the prompter, such gaffes are guaranteed to multiply and swallow more and more news cycles -- and that, in turn, is guaranteed to cost Trump his recent fragile gains. Trump's enemies have almost despaired of this actually happening; they feared that he would simply listen to Kellyanne the rest of the way, and then -- who knows -- the unthinkable might happen and he might just win. You can sense a terrible anticipation among them tonight as they realize that prompter discipline has been increasingly abandoned. They cannot believe their good luck and are virtually salivating at the opportunities that lie ahead.

Here is what Trump must do if he's to have a real chance at winning this election:
He must get back on the teleprompter wagon and stay on it. Nothing matters more than that. Stick to script; deliver his message, bask in the applause, and leave. Give the media hyenas NOTHING.
Beyond that:
-- Only offer limited and quite anodyne remarks about his opponent.
-- Be relentlessly positive, calm, composed and often smiling from here on in. He must remember: scowl less; smile more. He has a great smile and women love it. USE IT.
-- Limit rallies and speeches. They are of relatively limited use at this point. He must have some but his base is already fired up -- and insufficient to win the election. It's all about making himself acceptable and plausible to Republican leaning white women in swing states; the risk/reward calculation from the rallies is just not good enough.
-- He must do well enough in the debates; he doesn't need to "crush" Hillary -- which he will not -- nor does he need to try. He needs to appear calm, thoughtful, positive, serious and presidential. I'll have more to say about this later.
That is all. If he does all these things going forward he's got a real chance; otherwise, he will lose and he might lose surprisingly badly. All the recent gains in the polls are fragile; they are at the sufferance of voters in swing states who are turned off by the HAG and are willing to give Trump a chance, as long as he seems not too crazy and basically plausible. That sufferance can be revoked in a heartbeat, and if Trump keeps going off the reservation, so it will.

Again. This is no time for complacency; quite the opposite. Pride cometh before the fall. It's time to concentrate, get more serious, and do what it takes to win the election. All the more so since the prize of winning it is so precious -- so sweet. There will be time enough to celebrate IF that unspeakably glorious prize is attained.

Lizard: great post but one problem - there are no teleprompters in a debate setting.
I know everyone's amped up about the debates, thinking Hillary won't physically get through it, will break into a horrendous cough, a length bathroom break, or Trump's style will give her too much trouble to evade...
But we can't forget she's an expert debater with the entire media and political industries backing her. Trump touts his great experience at the GOP debates and how he won them all, but:
(1) debate polls were online so let's be real here... easy for him to win those
(2) while they're opponents, the GOP debates were still people on the "same team" so not entirely gloves-off (except once or twice with Rubio + Cruz tag teaming against Trump)
(3) Multiple people rather than a 1-on-1 battle.
We used to think the debates were the chance for Trump to close the gap & overtake Hillary, to show a real, genuine Trump and not the lying and distorted version put forward by the media. Now he's in a position with everything to lose... I don't like that, one bit.
Still, the polling lately is delightful and Hillary's collapse too. So I don't end this post on a sour note:

Yes, that remark did worry me, though the damage from the Hillary's health angle and his trolling of the media today will likely mean that remark will do little.
I am hoping that he's preparing more robustly for the debates, as I had heard he was simply freewheeling it and that isn't good enough. He needs to sound...

I believe we're on the verge of a preference cascade (which can't necessarily be picked up by polling), but I do emphasize "don't fuck up" for a reason.

Everyone gets caught in the minutia of the everyday happenings in this election, but one thing is clear... Trending over a far greater macrocycle has been the rise of Donald Trump... There have been ebbs and flows, but on a whole, the campaign has been always moving forward. One month ago, according to all major polling organization, Trump had but a 1% chance of winning. It's now up to 40%.
That said, we have seen just how volatile this election can be. A ten point swing is nothing. It has happened in just under a month. Swing states can open and close. We have seen the RCP electoral map look something like the top, to something like the bottom based on past and current polls. We could feasibly swing back the other way with one huge misstep, one poorly phrased comment, or one unfortunate leak...

Obviously we don't want an echo chamber here, but Trump knows the deal is yet to be done. I had a lot of doubts at first. The MSM didn't help with the constant nay saying, but he continues to win... I can no longer doubt Trump, but as others have said, we can't rest on our laurels. Complacency is for the weak.
