@Alpha smaller cities no but bigger cities yeah because english level is usually better. I live in a medium sized city and it gets frustratimg sometimes. Google translate helps but body language not so much. Just remember typical japanese dont kiss in public

Bushu: A few quick tips --

• The line「今何してる？」(without her name, and please note that there is no っ between the し and て) is a flare that you send up to a fuck-buddy late of an evening, when you want to meet up that very night to give her a good pounding. If you have not fucked the addressee yet, you should stop using this. Trust me -- I send it to, and receive it from, fuck buddies all the time, as do all my player friends, whether Japanese or gaijin. This is almost universal fuck-buddy code. By the way, by adding in the っ you are changing the verb from する to 知る (しる), i.e. "What are you doing?" becomes "What do you know?", which makes no sense. Of course she'll understand your mistake, and probably chuckle at it, but still.

The problem is, you'll have to follow up depending on her response, but I don't think you really speak much Japanese. Why don't you just try sending very simple English texts instead?

This gets right to the heart of the matter -- if you really want to consistently have a shot at the top-shelf local quim, you need to learn Japanese. There's no getting around the fact that only 1 in 4 young J-birds (if that?) speaks English well enough that you can genuinely connect with them in your language. Sure there are exceptions where a mélange of body language/dumb luck/Google translate might get you laid, but those are very rare exceptions. And what is more -- it's not just a simple numbers game of having access to 100% of the pussy pool vs. 25% of the pussy pool. In addition, you will find that the English speakers are of decidedly lower quality than the non-speakers, simply because the former likely learned their English living overseas and/or getting reamed by a parade of foreign cock, and were corrupted in the process. 禍福は糾える縄の如し！

Anyway, good luck and welcome to Japan.

If you're in Osaka, try out the "Why Not?" events. They tend to have girls with better English language ability.

Thanks a lot for the long reply! The してる　was a typo, thanks for pointing that out. I really have to learn japanese more intensively at home, I already take classes every day but kinda lack vocab. Will try out your advice for the next girls I will meet.
What about texting girls from social circle that I am already chatting with from time to time?
I try to use stuff they told me before to start a conversation like Ａちゃん今日またバイト？ then they start complaining about ther baito and I tease them a little and ask them out after they finish their work for dinner. Or sometimes I just tell them randomly where I went and ask if they were there yet. Do you have some other staple lines to use to initiate a conversation?

TJ gave some solid advice there. I'd tend to agree that if your written Japanese isn't there yet, you might be better off just sending English texts. Not sure how you intend to tease them when you can barely write Japanese. Stay away from jokes/teasing in Japanese until you are VERY comfortable in the lingo. Trust me on this one!

Are Japanese woman interested in Asian man (Chinese) with full beard (Face and neck) or are they more interested in guys who are cleanly shaved? I'm heading to Japan in December and I've been growing my beard for months. It'll be great if I could keep still keep my beard though.

I didn't mentioned that I'll be shaving off the beard though, just that it'll be good to keep them.

However, I do understand that most Japanese men do not keep any facial hair as there is a negative connotation towards Asian men with beard as compared to a non-Asian male.

Was wondering if keeping the full beard will make me stand out among the rest of the Asian guys as the homeless guy, hobo and etc?

It's not negative so much as it's perceived as a little bit dirty or scruffy. I've seen old Japanese guys with beards, but it's rare among younger guys. Probably because the older men don't give a shit anymore.

But anyway, it's weak frame to shave your beard just for the girls, so I say keep it. You won't look like a hobo if you otherwise dress well.

P.S Did a quick Google. 80% of Japanese girls asked said they don't like men with beards. Then again that leaves you with 20% who do and we all know not to listen too much to what girls say.

If you're on a budget I'd suggest Osaka. Big city experience (i.e. you could run day game or nightgame 24/7 and stay anonymous) but rent costs will be half that of Tokyo.

You would be looking at a student visa and paying for the school is around $4000 per six months.

Living costs are what you make them, but you can do OK on $2000-3000/month. Getting a good apartment - at local rates, not Airbnb-style rates, and a good location - is half the battle. Score a good place in Shinsaibashi or nearby and you'll have a ball.

You can live a little bit outside of Tokyo and rent an apartment. But when you calculate the time and the transportation cost to a decent area, you can add those 10,000 yen to your rent. I live a little bit outside, close to Ikebukuro and it take me some time to go to Roppongi and Shibuya. I don't go there daily. But I would recommend the higher rent to have better logistics.
Look for a shared house where you allowed to bring in overnight guests.

He's not kidding. It's an absolute nightmare finding a "real" apartment to rent as a foreigner.

Personally, I'd make 2.5k the minimum. Preferably 3k. I would not be happy on 2k/month in Japan.

Exchange rate is currently great if you earn your money in USD, but might not last.

Also, if you sign up for one of the bigger Japanese language schools long-term (at least 6 months, preferably 12) they should be able to help you find an apartment. I investigated a school in Sapporo and they had a list of places starting at 30,000 yen/month. That is really doing Japan on a budget.

Any dudes who want to go to Japan for a year to learn Japanese or martial arts, I'd recommend getting a job with an eikaiwa. It will take some time to go through the process, but there's your visa and a salary for a very easy job that should give you plenty of time to pursue your hobbies. University dudes, do the JET program after you graduate (start the application now). There's a good chance you'll be stuck in the countryside, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I don't think it's all that bad. And it certainly doesn't sound childish to the Japanese ear.

Going straight to first name with no -chan attached is considered overly familiar (narenareshii). Japanese people don't do that until they are on very close terms, but they tolerate foreigners who make this mistake. If you have been doing this, then well...chances are people were too polite to mention it.

In that sense, using -chan is actually more polite. You can drop it at a strategic timepoint later on to make the girl feel closer to you. Or just avoid using their name at all. San is overkill for seduction purposes.

I'm with you on the girly-sounding gaijin though. That's what happens when you learn all your Japanese from girls.
