God, I love Teddy Atlas' breakdowns. They're so goddamn comical. You can tell his partner is trying - and failing - to keep a straight face after all the wisecracking.

Crawford at -200 for KO/TKO/DQ... not bad, might parlay with Tyson Fury -900 KO/TKO/DQ for 2/3 return. Straight bet under 9 full rounds at -115 at MGM seems reasonable too.

Teddy is silly.

He is right about what Crawford should do. I don't agree with what he said Horn should do. Horn's best punch is a cross/straight. He isn't going to hit Crawford with a feint like that. Crawford would probably go backwards or pivot to the right, unless he is tired, has switched feet, or is against ropes.

Look for Horn to split the jab. He might even try to slip and split Crawford's jabs. The punch he will use will be his right cross. If he is close enough maybe a hook to the body. He is a very vanilla boxer, but it works well for him because he has very solid fundamentals, especially on defense with his excellent blocks.

How hard will Horn attempt to walk down Crawford is the question. During his fight with Pacman, he walked him down at times and made him move around alot. Terrance might do the same, but perhaps he won't let Horn try and cut him off in the ring constantly. If Terrance hits him hard enough and early enough, that would stop Horn from doing that. I noticed from the Pacman fight, that Horn did not respect Pacman's power early in the fight and in the middle of the fight.

If Crawford can get in a good uppercut under Horn's defense, he can shake him up a bit and make him back off a bit, which is ideal because Terrance is a long range fighter.

Agree largely with your assessment, especially on Horn's right hand - it is definitely his best punch and I still feel that Horn doesn't get enough respect for being tough, scrappy and not afraid to wade into the fray. The way he got cut with that headbutt during the Pacquiao fight and that crazy left that Manny landed in the 9th and he was still able to handle himself and roar back was damn impressive.

Still, I feel like Crawford is really out to make a name for himself at 147 and come out with a bang. Even though he's a consummate technician, the guy's got deceptively good power with both hands and I'm betting that he'll bring it hard. I can see a very slight window of opportunity for Horn to take advantage of any over-aggressiveness on Crawford's part in this type of scenario: much like you said, slip the jab when Crawford's fighting southpaw and then unleash a nasty right.

Hence probably gonna bet equal amounts on the -150 parlay mentioned above and the -115 Under 10 rounds bet. Gonna lose it all if it goes to decision, but I guess a partial hedge is better than nothing. Also, if Fury somehow doesn't come through on that parlay, I'm just gonna quit betting on boxing for awhile and reevaluate my lifestyle choices.

Horn is so much bigger than most in his weight classes and he has a great chin. This fight is going to a decision and might even be technically a boring fight. I agree he does not get enough respect for his size and grit. He must walk around big and it is impressive he can make weight like that and not gas out or be weak.

He bullies others and fights a little dirty by pulling and yanking others around to disrupt their rhythm. He can also fight in a phone booth. Crawford does not fight well like that.

Since Crawford is ambidextrous he will have some advantages for sure, but I cannot see him hurting Horn at all, which is why it is quite likely, we will see Crawford moving around alot and use his range. Horn sucks at closing gaps kinda. His accuracy with his right straight is not always on point, which is caused by his lack of great footwork. His footwork is just good, but if it were better he would not have that accuracy issue when trying to intercept the opponent. He usually has to cut off the ring and tactics like that to limit the mobility of a faster opponent.

Styles make fights and after writing all this stuff, I want to see this fight even more now, even if it ends up being "boring", but I'm a fight nerd like that.

As always TK, I respect your insight... still think Crawford's speed and skill is going to win out over the bigger man with punch volume taking its toll, much like how Lomachenko took Linares apart. But like you, I'm excited to see what happens.

You make a good point. Crawford is top five in jab speed. Possibly top 2. Amazing jabs are crucial for fighting an opponent like Horn. Combined with his length that should carry him very far. I'd like to see him roll some of Horn's crosses off his shoulder and pop him with a short hook, pivot and then jab him. Horn is slow enough to get rocked this way over and over. If he can mouse or cut his eye good enough, he can get a TKO that way.

It's not too soon for BJS to take on GGG, in fact the timing couldn't be much better. I'm a big fan but 2 years ago nobody wanted to fight him. He spent a long time knocking out second rate fighters because middleweight was a weak division and he was the boogeyman - avoided. However there comes a point in most fighters careers where talent succumbs to age and GGG is on the cusp.

He's 36, has gone the distance in his last 2 fights and although still the main man in the division signs of decline are apparent. Whoever beats GGG becomes the man and the sharks are beginning to circle, GGG's time will come if he stays around much longer than 12-18 months. 18 months ago he couldn't get a big fight and now you've got Canelo, Jacobs, BJS, Charlo and Dereveyanchenko etc willing to step in the ring. It's not coincidence. BJS is big at the weight, an excellent boxer and capable of getting a decision if he can stay out of range for 12 rounds, which is his only chance as he doesn't have much pop himself. I don't expect GGG to fight BJS any time soon, because as much as I'd like to see him take on all comers whilst he still can he makes more money from a Canelo rematch than from fighting all all the other contenders combined. Then if he's smart he retires.

Crawford is levels above Horn and one of the top 3-5 P4P boxers today. The only way Horn makes this competitive is by coming in heavier, leaning on Crawford and making it a real scrappy dogfight. Horn fought an old, small and substantially diminished Pacquiao and was lucky to get a controversial decision on home turf. Pacquiao almost stopped him, Crawford does not let him off the hook. TC is too good, too young and too mean for this fight to play out the same way. I think it will be competitive early on but expect TC to find his rhythm, break Horn down and stop him.

The only guy at welterweight who might beat Crawford is Errol Spence, that is the fight to make. And unlike most boxers nowadays who avoid threats at all costs and put it down to "business" these two dudes are on collision course because I don't think either backs down from anybody. Spence is physically gifted and Crawford is a junkyard dog, both are supremely talented. Give me that fight over any other in boxing right now, it's a true 50/50.

Ps, this thread should get more love.

Watch the pre fights. Did not know (maybe forgot) Shakur Stevenson is about to fight. Should be interesting to see how much he may have improved.
TravelerKai · 2018-06-09 20:05:00 · #1386
Well that was quick. Got another knock out and looked super sharp as usual. Hard to see what he really improved on from last fight, since it was so short. I guess I can review the film later or before his next fight. Need to add him to my boxing calendar so I don't miss his next fight.

Crawford got a KO.

Damn. Did not see that myself. Thought he would win, but not on a KO. He dominated him too. I was taking notes on the fight but screw that. I think Crawford can make a case for best p4p (pound 4 pound) right now. I do not see any welterweights beating THIS dude. He used to have these Mayweather like flashes during his past fights, but today that was damn near the whole fight.

Pac man needs to retire and stay that way, he could not fuck with Crawford at all. Errol Spence? That's gotta be the next fight but I don't know if Spence can fight this Terrance and hope to win. He was soooo sharp.

I feel like the Canelo steroid thing is a smokescreen. Knowing De La Hoya I think he's trying to hype it up even more so they can fight in September.

Guy has a big chip on his shoulder and wanted to prove that he wasn't soft or small coming into 147. Did you see all those lead rights that Horn kept coming in with? It's like he didn't throw a jab for 6 rounds. He was completely befuddled.

I'm gonna admit that I was shitting bricks in the 8th and 9th cuz my big bet was on the Under 9 rounds but wow, did he come through in the clutch. I'm hoping that Errol Spence will be Crawford's next fight.

Just watched the fight on YouTube. Horn was game but Crawford was levels above. He put the welterweight division on notice, he is here and he means business.

Dude can fight on the inside, at range, on the back foot or as the aggressor. He can even switch from orthodox to southpaw with ease. Just looks like fighting comes naturally to him.

His punching was clean crisp and precise and he throws with bad intentions. He does everything well.

Crawford had him figured out by the third round. Every time Horn came forward he was getting timed and countered. It was a boxing lesson.

What surprised me was that Horn was't the bigger stronger man. I thought he might be able to rough Crawford up a bit with his wrestling tactics and leading with head and elbows but Crawford was not intimidated or flustered at all. He was always in complete control. When the finish came Horn had nothing left and the ref saved him from further punishment.

Interested to see who he faces next. Thurman, Garcia and Porter don't want none of that. Expect them to posture and avoid the fight saying some bullshit like the financials don't add up or they're exploring other options.

I think the Spence fight will happen but it's unlikely to be next. I think that one is too close to call at this time. Crawford has skills for days and Spence is a big strong and relentless. That fight has the makings of a classic and unusually for this era both boxers seem to want it. If we can get that in the next 18 months or so and Lomachenko vs Mikey I'll be a happy man.

Horn's entire game was walking forward with an overhand right. He forgot how to jab and was taught a boxing lesson. His wrestling game was also completely off without referee's help like in Australia.

Normally I'd support an underdog Aussie, but this guy is so arrogant (and therefore rather un-Australian), it's unbelievable. I was at the airport not long after he fought Pacman, and on the magazine stand, there was his autobiography about how he's such a champion already...

I can't wait to see Wilder v Joshua, that's exciting! I hope it's another classic like Joshua v Klitschko.

As much as I like Tyson Fury's shit talking, he's so damn boring to watch.

Mike Tyson said in 2013 that most of the top fighters are on steroids/HGH etc, and others have speculated they do it in their 'off season' as it were. This video pretty much explains how they can even get away with it during training.

I'm completely convinced by it.

And it explains why Floyd only fights in Nevada. Klitshko, Joshua (he put on SO much muscle after he was out of the olympic testing programme), all of them are at it. There's probably a couple of exceptions, but it explains why Klitschko for example (or Floyd) had the same body and almost the same reflexes at 41 as at 31.

Steroids etc don't make you a better fighter, as Tyson said, but if your opponent is taking it, you need to also. Plus, they allow you to extend your career. Paulie Malinaggi also said if Olympic all-year round random testing was introduced to boxing, jumping up weights would lessen significantly.

Please watch the whole video before replying.

Does that really surprise anyone? there are millions and millions of dollars at stake. Dudes and their camps will go to hell and back to procure any advantages that they can. That's why I'm always laughing when organizations pay USADA and other groups millions a year to "clean up" the sport. The only dudes getting popped are the guys who aren't wealthy enough to afford coaches with the connections to get around these things.
Teedub · 2018-06-25 09:54:00 · #1397
Oh it doesn't surprise me, it just highlights how corrupt the sport is. I was expecting some fanboy-ish comments like "X would never do PEDs" or whatever, which is why I was like "please watch the whole video". I guess I'm too used to reading idiotic youtube comments when it comes to boxing, and not reasoned arguments like in this thread.

So looks like it's been called off. I think Joshua will be fighting Povetkin in September. Not sure if that's as formidable of a fight as I think it is, or if Povetkin has just gotten too old. Not sure who Deontay has next. Has everyone seen his most fight against Luis Ortiz? I honestly think that's the most entertaining fight I've ever watched live by far, klitschko-joshua was great but there was just some crazy energy in Wilder's last fight. My guess on what's happened with the fight is that Wilder wants the fight more than Joshua because Joshua already has the belts and the bigger name, so Joshua (aka Eddie Hearn) is gonna make Deontay pay for it when he wants that fight, which he isn't willing to do right now. I guess the long-term plan must be to build for a HUGE fight in 2019 or even 2020, which could be amazing, but I just hope neither loses before then, as Josua hasn't looked invincible and Deontay is...Deontay.

Oh and I'd say that Tyson Fury more than makes up for his relatively boring (though I consider a points-seeking, defensive style considerably more entertaining and impressive in the heavyweight divisions, where there's just so uch force moving around you can get so casually get knocked out, than at, say, welterweight (looking at you Floyd)) in-ring performance with his utterly "Tysonian" (honestly when Tyson's dad named him after the heavyweight boxing champ he took a really long shot and it paid off amazingly) outside the ring antics.

Also FWIW, I think Joshua > Fury, Fury > Wilder, and Wilder > Joshua. I just hope nothing (Tyson's cocaine addiction, a loss for Wilder or Joshua) intercedes before we can see the most exciting moment in heavyweight boxing for decades resolve itself with a single champion. Great time to be a boxing fan tbh

GGG at -175 at Bovada looks solid. Maybe throw in a partial hedge for Canelo KO if I can get good odds on that once the props start trickling out. Even so, I'm hoping GGG knocks the soul out of this ginger in "Big Drama Show" #2.

I am so unbelievably fucking hyped for Fury v Wilder, like I don't think I've been this excited for a sporting event since i was like 10 years old. The best part is that even though I'm a huge Deontay fan and want the windmills to wax the gypsy king onto the canvas, either man as the winner will be so unbelievably entertaining. If Deontay wins, American Heavyweights are fucking back baby, and in the public eye I feel like AJ is going to slip to #2 as his steady ducking and ridiculous stoppages (takam, come on) and referee favoritism (wouldn't ever let Parker get inside) make him look like the manufactured product he is.

I don't think I'm going to be able to handle it emotionally if Fury surprises absolutely no one and pulls out with some bullshit excuse, but for some reason I just don't think that's going to happen. Like it's SO PERFECT. If Fury had the 6+ months of training/preparation he so clearly needs and any normal man would take, he could tell himself he has plenty of time to prepare, get relaxed, get distracted...and we all know how bad that is for him. But this, this - way too little time to prepare for the biggest fight of his life? That’s straight up goddamn gypsy king territory.

It's honestly guaranteed to be such an entertaining fight. There's no way deontay doesn't absolutely go for broke in 10-12 if he’s down on points, and that’s gotta lead to either a wilder KO or at least a fury knockdown.

And also tbh watching tyson work that rope and dope on wilder should be super entertaining. Getting to see if fury can matrix style duck those atom bombs we know deontay is gonna go for early and often will be awesome. If tyson is as woefully deteriorated and unready as the naysayers believe and the supporters quietly worry, he’s definitely getting knocked the fuck out in the first 5. However, i feel like deontay has never ever fought someone remotely like fury (like ortiz also had a massive boxing technique/iq advantage on deontay but - and i could be wrong - i feel like he was a very different sort of fighter than the sly, crafty gypsy (king))...i mean few have, but ive long thought that deontay honestly would have a better shot against AJ, who might try and go to war with deontay, than fury, who on the other hand I feel like AJ, who fury doesnt have a huge pure “boxing” superiority to, would take care of fury handily

Best of all? If Wilder beats Fury and Joshua still refuses to fight him, it just becomes beyond obvious to everyone that AJ is ducking.
