Rousey was used as a marketing tool for UFC. And the more you look at it, they did a great job of pumping her up to extend the UFC to women, by staging a spectacular defeat by pairing her up with a more attractive and far superior fighter. My guess is they pulled off a beautifully executed marketing stunt to spin the hamster wheel and grow the UFC's audience.

RE: I'm sick of Rhonda Rousey!
Rhonda Rousey's defeat by Holms is almost a movie tale of underdog winning over the popular super star of the moment, Rousey' problem was her ego, when women are bombarded with attention and compliment of how great they are they believe they are the last thing to happens since slice bread.

Just look at the poster and pictures of both of them
[Image: ronda-rousey-vs-holly-holm.jpg]
[Image: hi-res-ea930f8849c19efafab59bd9abd58090_...p;amp;q=85]

I do not think the media will embrace Holms the way they did with Rousey, for what I have seen of Holms and her Instagram she is like a humble girl with a good family and values, she smiles and cries when talking after the fight, Rousey slogan is "Do nothing bitch", she can't speak to the camera without swearing "shit" "fuck" etc, and the media loves her for that just like the media loves Jennifer Lawrence.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you don't really follow MMA because if you did there is no way you would say they intended for or in any way hoped this would happen.

This has been a catastrophe for them.

RE: I'm sick of Rhonda Rousey!
I am not a familiar UFC fan but the relentless marketing of Rousey has caught my attention. Fortunately I was able to watch the fight for free to air where I'm staying at present. I wouldn't have paid for pay per view.

Although I have no technical knowledge, it appeared to me just how calm and assured Holms was as a fighter. She was not intimidated and seemed to know she just had to handle the initial onslaught her stand up fighting would easily handle Rousey. It was impressive and I cant believe those credentials were at long odds in the betting market, but I guess that shows the sentiment for Rousey.

Rousey just came across as a bit of a brawler who was gassed in about 2 minutes, but I also think there is no way to look polished and with it when you are getting the shit kicked out of you.

RE: I'm sick of Rhonda Rousey!
I'm actually inclined to believe there probably was an element of conspiracy theory in it, although I suspect Rousey probably was not in on it and was thrown like a piece of meat to an angry dog. Holm had a special clause in her contract for the very fact she was fighting Rousey. Rousey was madly hyped ahead of this fight. Does anyone have any numbers on how Holm's odds were travelling ahead of the fight, or even during it?

Rousey vs Lawrence.

I'd pay for that view. In more ways than one.

In UFC fights they typically announce the betting odds of each fighter along with their record, hometown, etc. during an introduction right before the ref starts the fight. I believe Holm was something like like +800 which means you would have made 800 bucks if you bet 100 on Holm.

the odds were 12 to 1 before the weigh ins. After Rousey looked like a fool during the weigh-ins the money came pouring into holm

Whats people thoughts on McGregor versus Aldo? I see a similar dynamic with how McGregor carries himself and Rousey.

I think McGregor is an amazing striker, but I think there is too much hype surrounding him, I'm no MMA expert, but it seems like Aldo is a more well rounded fighter.

Personally I think the UFC paid Mendes to throw the fight with McGregor so they can hype their fight of the century with Aldo for the undisputed Feather weight title since both guys currently have belts.

UFC is cool, but I really think that Dana White is like the guy behind the curtain pulling all the strings, there's too much money to be made. Most of the fighters aren't getting paid shit, so I bet White can bribe and pay guys shit tons of money under the table to make or break fights according to what will be the best for marketing and making him more money.

It's too corporatized now, it's all about selling ppv, product/endorsement deals, and making money, not like back in the day with the Gracie family when honor, pride, etc. still mattered.

That cocky mo'focka Connor McGregor ?

McGregor didn't half assed any of his attempt to piss Aldo off

Rousey ?

Tell them too much, they wouldn't understand; tell them what they know, they would yawn.
They have to move up by responding to challenges, not too easy not too hard, until they paused at what they always think is the end of the road for all time instead of a momentary break in an endless upward spiral

I think it's going to go to Aldo although I like Mcgregor. Aldo is just more aggressive and I feel he'll bring in the pounding early on. Then again it's been shown that Mcgregor can take some hits and still come back for the win. Still should be a good fight either way.

Mendes took his fight against Conor on short notice (2 weeks) after Aldo suffered a rib injury. He was doing well but gassed out in the second round due to not having a full training camp and got TKOed. I think that's a more simple explanation then assuming there must be a conspiracy behind the scenes.

A friend of mine and I were talking the Mendes afterwards and concluded that based on McGregor's performance in it that Aldo is going to wreck him.

I don't see why it's so far fetched, UFC is a business it's aim is to make money, it's basically a corporation, Dana White is the CEO and has a lot of power. Maybe I'm wrong, but doesn't White basically rank the fighters and cherry pick the fights?

You can't deny how influential he's been in hyping up Ronda Rousey and McGregor, and look at all the movies, commercials, etc. they've been in recently. All that brings more fans and money to the UFC, look at UFC new big endorsement with Reebok.

It doesn't seem too unrealistic that White would orchestrate everything with the maximum amount of dollars in mind. Maybe the original fight with Aldo would have brought in 5 million, but now the super fight to unify the belts will bring in 10 million.

Just a theory, I could very well be wrong, but with all the kooky political conspiracies guys on here believe about politics and the media, I don't see how my theory would be that far fetched.

I've literally been watching MMA since it's inception in '93. The UFC is not paying off guys to throw fights.

The reason why it's far fetched is because;

1) If this ever got out in public it would ruin their business.(Trust me it would eventually get out)

2) If they were doing it then they have been doing an awful job at it. There have been so many countless examples of times that a guy losses and it hurts the UFCs bottom line.

3) The UFC does not rank any fighters. There is independent rankings from a bunch of journalist who submit their rankings. The UFC in turn releases these rankings. Rankings do not mean shit anyway. The UFC does cherry pick who they feel like should fight for titles. That part is true but there is nothing inherently wrong with that because there is no explicit rule in MMA on how guys should fight each other. It's a fight promotion not a sports league with a playoff system.

Because as I said earlier there are just too many examples of guys losing that hurt the UFCs bottom line to think that in 2015 this is the fight Dana White decided to risk the integrity of his company on. It's just too cliche of a theory. Why did Rousey lose who was their biggest star? Why couldn't the UFC pay GSP to stay? Why did Anderson Silva lose twice when he finally started to reach a PPV star status? Why did one of their biggest stars at the time BJ Penn lose to Frankie Edgar twice in a row? Why did Chuck Liddell keep losing? Why did Forrest Griffen lose in his first title defense? Why did the UFC's up and coming latin star Roger Huerta never pan out? Why did Cain Velasquez lost to Fabricio Werdum? Cain was the UFC's only chance to expand into Mexico.

Dude the UFC didn't even pay off Jon Jones to take a last min opponent change back a few years ago let alone to pay off guys to throw fights. Go to wiki and look up UFC 151. UFC lost millions on that card.

For every theory about a fight that the UFC paid off I can name 10 that they should have paid off if they actually cared about their business.

Sounds great in theory, but in practice how many C-suites are going to turn down a proposal that has a 50/50 chance of either making them an extra few million bucks or destroying the company? They'll take it every time as demonstrated by Corporate America's long history of insanely risky mergers, high risk trading strategies, accounting scandals....and whatever else you want to name.

What are you talking about? How does that apply in this situation? Explain in detail how the UFC not paying off Chad Mendes to throw the fight against Conor McGregor would result in a 50/50 chance of them making an extra few million dollars or destroying the UFC? Could you work out the economics on how the UFC gets destroyed by not paying off Chad Mendes?
