BS.

There are people on this forum with high scores and low scores but we all communicate with one another. I might not be able to talk about particle dynamics with Stephen Hawkings but if he is into premier league football we can share a beer and get along fine. I can relate to people far more intelligent then me ( whatever that means ) because we've experienced much the same highs and lows of life. We all can.

Too much faith put into the iq test which was never meant to be a way of defining intelligence but rather as a way of distinguishing who was mentally ill.

You are saying that it's possible to find common ground between the very intelligent and the below average. That's true, and guys can bond over and be interested in their common grounds. I also used to work in blue collar jobs, and had no trouble laughing with the guys on lunch and coffee breaks.

But I think you will admit it doesn't begin or end with finding a small slice of common ground. And not everyone is capable of mustering even a grain of interest in sports. What are we supposed to do then? Fake interest in something that holds no interest at all? Come on. That's very elitist of you. As if those not interested in sports are socially deficient and don't belong in your group.

Guys get along better when they have more to talk about. And there are gaps between groups of people regarding that. There just are. Some guys are worse than boring to me. And no, I can't bond over sports with them. That's not a useful suggestion for everyone. It's like saying balding doesn't matter because you can just shave. Ya, well some of us don't have the head shape for that. How do you feel when trying to feign interest in something just to fit in and remain social? Do you want do that a lot? It's mind numbingly boring and leads to alcoholism.

I do however agree with you here but remember that basing intelligence on IQ alone is stupid since intelligence is such a broad concept that IQ can only measure certain facets of it.

Intelligence measured by IQ isn't even the best predictor of success and achievement; it's actually conscientiousness which is negatively correlated with IQ.

RE: Communicating with the less intelligent
Being smart doesn't necessarily mean that you can't relate to morons. Whether you want to or not is another thing entirely.

If you describe yourself as smart and you can't get on their level, then why would you describe yourself as smart? To me, this post sounds like you're doing a solipsistic slow jerk.

In my home town, everyone thought they were smarter than everyone else. I don't know if every small town shit hole is like this, but it seems to be most prevalent with farmers or guys who fix their own cars. Their mental masturbation was a rationalization for never having gone to school or leaving town to go someplace else. They weren't living up to their potential and they knew it, they never got out of their comfort zone or pushed themselves or anything. They thought that their organic development, without any extra work, was "good enough because I'm still better than the next guy".

They view people who lift weights or actively try to improve themselves as threats to their existence, because they themselves would never go through the trouble of doing any extra work. Which is strange because most of these people describe themselves as "hard workers" and place a premium on the hardness of the work that they're doing.

Intelligence is like height. The OP claimed to be tall, and various insecure jellies jumped on the thread to shout him down.

Next we heard conflations with overall basketball skill (life success), or things that are orthogonal or inversely correlated, e.g. dribbling skill (social facility).

It's a stupid discussion. Tall people know they are tall, whether they are allowed to say so or not. People who have a problem with this are defective.

Intelligence is g, it is measurable, and some people have more of it.

That's not the point. I'm not concerned whether someone realises that they're tall. I would, however, be very confused if that same person refused to hang out with anyone shorter than them - which is what this discussion is about.

Why have you fixated on my solitary example of sport and gone off on a strange tangent about having to fake interest in things?? You seem to be saying that highly intelligent people and people of average intelligence can't have things in common to talk about, that's utter bollocks. Your point implies that highly intelligent people are on another plane breathing rarefied air unlike the rest of us,that they don't do the same shit as the rest of us. It's the equivalent of putting good looking pussy on a pedestal.

Highly intelligent people do the same shit as us. I know a few people who I can see are very special in the way their intellect works, they are much sharper then me or others I know however we get on fine, why, how can that be if they are so much smarter then me? We could not possibly have anything in common like you suggest. Well it's because they like to chase girls, they like to kick back and watch movies, they like to travel, they like to get drunk and do stupid shit, they have an interest in fashion, food etc. etc. And guess what,so do I! Just because they are highly intelligent with high IQ's does not mean they don't do the same shit we do. And yes I rarely discuss their work which for two of them is in political think tanks for the EU but that's because their field has little interest for me. If I wanted to discuss it then they'd break it down for me.

RE: Communicating with the less intelligent
An IQ test is nothing more than a measure of how hard you will eventually have to swallow or reject the blue pill. What good is being smart if it is only accepted within a narrow and constructive world.

All IQ tests and general Western education do is pick out the ass kissers and managers for their system. You maybe were one of those kids OP whom got labeled as gifted as a child and was placed in advanced/IB schooling. Aside from being blessed to tackle advanced Science or Maths you still ended up in the same Post secondary dump as me or the next man with probably the same general opportunities unless you came from lots of money.

@ OP have you ever had an original idea in your life?

Are you truly smart or just able to take in information quickly and barf it back up when needed?

Have you ever been rewarded for doing outside of the built up societal norms and complexes?

Is it truly you lithe dumb people or you find nobody cares much about geeky shit like formulations?

Do you purely base the idea of being smart on a system that does really work all that well?

Your tone is mad prudish in this thread.

I myself I an off the charts. I an probably more unlined with a psychobas far as smarts go. I can't converse in the language if Western intelligence and I have largely been labeled a idiot the majority of my life. But I always realized that being able to memorize shit does not mean shot for the articulation and gifts of processing power "smart" people have over me I generally blow then away in clear logic and rational thought. I see how things work on a Marco sake and I easily can Chris out solutions and ideas. I see the finish line while most smart people are still in the blocks. I an sure many others on this site are in the same boat. Hell I even loosely see this in Roosh a man whom can converse in traditional systems and processes but generally has a wider more logical view of how things really work. And that is the thing, we are pulling Cons in people because most if us can talk both languages when necessary, these languages of regular norms and such but really just okay around with you as we are already long gone on that topic and are miles ahead on something way better.

The acclaimed Dean of my School is a moron whom has never had a real idea in his life. He is a IRT and is married to a ugly blonde women.

My two favorite profs are men whom the rest of that faculty gets kinda of cranky about sometime. This men will finish your sentence more times then not and be able to talk in any topics language. Including sports. Both men have a laundry list of original ideas and thirties published. One is married to a woman 23 years younger than him, the other takes trips to South America yearly as he is fluent in 6 languages. Both went to shitty schools while the Dean went to McGill, Cornell, and Harvard.

You see a loose pattern here? One is a genius in the mainstream western world but has the blue pill do far up his ass he can't be saved. The other two are original renegade men whom have ideas and put thier names on the line always.

Being smart gets you to the position of my dean. Being a renegade gives you a more fulfilling lifestyle.

RE: Communicating with the less intelligent
(09-15-2012 07:27 PM)Deif Wrote:  I'm not perfect. I'm average height, and, if I hadn't invested years into fitness, I'd be slightly below average in terms of looks. I don't hesitate to say, however, that I'm above average in terms of intelligence based on the statistics (IQ test), and my general observations. That said, I realize that there are people out there who are far more intelligent than me, but they are a rare breed.

I've always found it hard to communicate with the less intelligent until fairly recently. I used to be on a totally different page and I could rarely connect with dumber people unless it was from a hierarchical position, i.e. alpha talking to beta or beta talking to alpha.

Some things I've noticed:

1. Less intelligent people have little curiosity about the outside world. This probably isn't too bad considering the sorry state of affairs of the world we live in, and that usually translates into high self-esteem and high confidence for the less intelligent since they rarely reflect on themselves.

I find that a lot of conversations tend to center around ego-stroking, whether it's two guys hyping one another up or one guy giving another some sort of pep talk. It's not a good idea to bring up critical insights, facts, or philosophical insight because they are unfamiliar with them. They perceive it as negativity.

2. A lot of things will fly over their heads. Their brains are slower at processing, so they cope by ignoring a lot of the information that comes their way. I used to think I was being ignored when talking to dumber people, but I realized that they simply did not understand what was being said. This was basically a death sentence when gaming dumb females because it would result in long silences that killed the pickup.

3. Know sports. Less intelligent men spend roughly 3 hours a day rewatching the same clips on ESPN. They obsess about athlete gossip in the same way women obsess over celebrity gossip. You can have fodder for an hour or two of conversation just by watching an episode of SportsCenter everyday. Also realize that a lot of men, quite literally, worship certain athletes. It's a kind of homoerotic affection that I have never understood.

4. You might spur insecurity in them. This is usually a problem for people who are of average intelligence. Dumber people probably never get the opportunity to be around extremely intelligent people so they don't understand intelligence gradation unless it's manifest in material possessions (i.e. an advanced university degree). People might see your intelligence as a threat, so it is a good idea to disarm their insecurities when you notice them sneering.

Please share your experiences and strategies. Let me put out a final disclaimer that not all less intelligent people manifest the points I've posted above. A lot of people (usually men), understand their strengths and weaknesses and play towards the former.

Much of what you describe sounds more like a culture gap than an intelligence gap.

If you're so intelligent, why are you hanging around people you don't relate to?

If you're intelligent, you'd be intelligent enough to calibrate your conversation to the person you are talking to; or alternatively you'd be intelligent enough to bail.

I think a lot of the hate in this thread is being inspired by the fact that your post was not intelligent to begin with. You are blaming other people for your own failings. If you lack the intelligence to seek out people who can discuss the outside world, if you lack the intelligence to downregulate what you say to the level of the person you are talking to, if you lack the intelligence to bail out of conversations about sports, if you lack the intellectual ability to not come across as condescending, then you should looking at yourself rather than blaming people for being dumb.

Intelligence is the ability to adapt to the circumstances, but your entire post revolves around your inability to adapt.

RE: Communicating with the less intelligent
I'm not really following the discussion, but here is the central point people are missing, on both sides.

The 2 SD rule applies to everyone. But intelligence != social dysfunction. Some people with high IQ's are extremely socially capable.

Only for those with the Aspergerey high-attention-span psyche does more intelligence = more social dysfunction. In Game we call this problem "being in your head".

It's easy for high attention spanners to assume that all smart people have the same hardwiring and therefore the same problem. The OP might have implied this. But in fact, they don't.

Likewise, intelligent people without this problem will think those who suffer from it are simply being assholes, exaggerating a minor issue for no good reason. They're not.

IQ is not the only axis of genetic mental diversity.

RE: Communicating with the less intelligent
In German, there is a phrase "Schein oder sein". What this is about is my fundamental philosophy. Do you value appearance or substance? Would you rather look strong or be strong? Would you rather look well educated or be well educated? Creating a facsimile is not as hard as actually putting in the work, what really fucks with people is when they look to be a certain way and then they believe that their appearance directly translates into a mastery of a certain skill. In game, the male model thinks that he has some sick game because he constantly pulls new ass. In money, the lardass behemoth of a woman who's daddy was worth billions thinks that she's a hard worker and she's worth the money that she inherits. The guy who was born with really good genetics thinks he knows what he's talking about when he describes how he got "jacked" digging ditches for 10 hours a day during a summer.

What are you basing your high intelligence on? One of my friends scored 140 on the IQ test and he's basically a retard. All he does is smoke weed and work a shitty factory job, barely graduated high school. And he's still one of those jokers who thinks he's some kind of unfettered genius. Not to get into a dickwaving contest, but what's your measuring stick?

Hannibal, you assume that high intelligence leads to life success. In fact, maladjustment increases dramatically as IQ rises.

Those of you attempting to make this into some kind of moral issue simply do not know what you're talking about. It is a real, practical problem.

You guys who hate on the guy should try to look at it in another way. For most of his life, it was probably the average intelligence person or even the dumbass, who has looked down upon him as some sort of nerd or uncharismatic guy. I would say they also feel superior and dont even care to communicate with him. Most average people believe that average is better because it is in their interest to believe that. Everyone has their own Will to Power.
It is the problem that smart politicians (i.e Bill Clinton and Barack Obama) have all the time. They have to dumb themselves down to the level of the average joe, who doesnt know shit about policies or what is going on, to get their votes. Acting, like the average joe and everybody is equal (Bill Clinton did it better than Obama), but in reality their group of friends does not include any of them and their private thoughts are quite different.
The honest truth is that when you deal with men of lower intelligence, it is a chore, just like when dealing women. Except that a woman has something that you are seeking, so she brings something to the table.
Also, just like we chastise fatties here to lose weight we should also chastise lower intelligence and average men to become more interesting, read, travel and get out of their comfort zone. We should not be pedestalizing averageness over exceptionality.

RE: Communicating with the less intelligent
More and more Im realising that alot of what I thought was intelligence in ppl is actually just "taste" - what they have a preference for.

For example, seemingly NO ONE in Thailand wants to talk about anything I consider deep or intelligent, or talk about the "why" of anything atall - even girls with excellent jobs and physics degrees, etc (i.e. obvious raw brainpower). It's cultural shaping of their preferences.

I have friends who I thought were just not that intelligent or high-level thinkers, but having helped them with some work on things Im good at (analysis, strategy + numbers) I realised that actually, yeah these people are perfectly capable of thinking this way themselves, they just dont LIKE it. They are just turned off by deep intellectual analysis or number crunching, and so they never exercised and built those mental muscles. They much prefer being creative or whatever - it's not that they arent capable of thinking the other way or developing their analytical side. They just dont enjoy exercising those muscles.

Maybe you have a strong taste for learning, abstract concepts, analytical thinking, etc. Some people actually have an aversion to those things, maybe because of upbringing (perhaps "having your head in books" wasnt acceptable as a kid) or perhaps they are just naturally more drawn to practical or creative things. It's less about intelligence and more about tastes and whether you have any common ways of relating.

IQ is definitely a real thing - you can measure cognitive efficiency in the frontal lobes in terms of brainwave frequencies - but I think most of the time when we think someone isnt intelligent, what we really mean is we just have developed patterns of thought or communication that they havent put time into, and we're arbitrarily calling those patterns "intelligence".

I don't get this whole, 'intelligent people find it difficult to talk to normal people' thing.

Most people are insular and don't want to talk about a wide range of topics. The reason isn't because they're stupid and you're smart, it's probably because you're a person that thinks that relaxing in a coffee shop is talking about stuff they've never heard of or places they've never been to.

If you feel too intelligent to talk to people, it is your social skills that need work, not everyone else's intelligence.

RE: Communicating with the less intelligent
Relating to other people has more to do with experiences rather than "raw intelligence".So, if someone had varied experience, then they would be able to relate to a large number of people. If all experiences provide us with knowledge(practical or not), then someone who is able to find common ground with nearly anyone to talk about various subjects is highly intelligent.
Since OP is such a superman that 90%+ of people he encounters will be beneath him in intellect, he should attempt to diversify his interests and learn about new topics so that he can better talk(relate) to his fellow man. In doing so, he will acquire knowledge that he had not previously known, but people previously described as "less intelligent" were knowledgeable about. In which case, would mean that OP isn't as above avg as he previously thought.
In conclusion, OP should find some new interests. I am knowledgeable about basketball, soccer, Latin, and 19th century philosophy but it is highly unlikely that I will find someone with the exact knowledge set that I possess. That being said, I am satisfied meeting someone who matches at least one thing that I am knowledgeable about so that we can transition into something that I can learn about from their knowledge set. I believe that a thirst for knowledge is a key characteristic of intellectualism.

+2 SD is the top 2%. If you don't make that cut you probably won't understand.

Of those that make the cut, I'd guess half have the Asperger's type attention span - IQ correlation that produces social dysfunction. That's based on the dysfunction percentages in the article I linked to above.

Therefore, about 1% of the general population should fully understand what the OP is saying; 2% should at least partially understand; and 98% should write poorly-reasoned attacks.

All other things being equal, and assuming truth, it's funny how saying you're more intelligent than most people gets hate, but if you say you are more fit than most people, or a better athlete, you get praise.

This is extremely key. Intelligent people would do well to recognise this. I would rank social intelligence as one if not the MOST important intelligence to have.
