I grew up in areas that were primarily immigrants and so English was not their first language. Throughout the years as i communicated with others i got into this pattern.

1-Don't speak so fast.
2-Cut out slang as much as possible.
3-Cut down on the use of contractions as much as you can.
4-Use words more appropriate to the person's vocabulary or educational level.

I don't know if anyone mentioned it but the show Frasier is packed full of vocabulary expanding writing that's well spoken and I always enjoyed it.
