A clepto-populist-socialist camarilla will then rule an increasingly bankrupt country.

And because they will neither blame themselves for the economic crisis they created, nor blame themselves for their blatant mismanagement; they will seek scape goats and put some bogeymen under the spotlight (both internal and external).

As the economic crisis deepens, they will have to resort to the only rethorical way to go in order to cling to power: Confrontation.

They could, in theory, even go as far as creating a fake war or a bogus coup d'etat and in doing so they would unite the masses under them (instead of cleaning up the mess and creating sustainable growth).

There will be also infighting within the party itself, since nobody in the politburo has the unquestionable agglutinating power that used to be Chavez' trademark. And the Castro Bros will do everything they can in order to keep their vital lifeline of Venezuelan oil; they will thus take sides and actively influence Venezuela's internal affairs.

It's a pitty it took this kind of buffoonery to finally raise social indicators. But even the handouts and subsidies are now under threat because the clepto-populist-socialists broke the country and compromised a great deal of the country's future income.

I believe it will still take a few, or several, years before it gets any better.

They'll blame the economy on imperialism, capitalism, the USA, the CIA, kulaks, etc which will in turn lead to more nationalizations, more money printing and more poverty. It is the usual pattern.

The Venezuelan ultra-rich former oligarchs, squirreled away in Miami, complaining that someone took part of their ill-gotten fortunes, and originating 90 percent of the propaganda against Chavez that everyone just repeats (all in a poor farce of their Cuban predecessors), make me like Chavez, or at least question the thin-on-details, negative shit people say about him. One example is the transparently recycled tactic--once used ad naseum against Castro--that he supposedly amassed "a huge personal fortune." I'm not saying he didn't, but people are going to have to produce something that looks better than this website as the proof:

Add to Chavez's list of enemies the Bush administration, Fox News, and a list of faceless multinationals and I'm thinking he must have been doing something right.

For all the talk about alpha in our corner of the web, we should be giving this guy planet-sized props. I can think of very few dudes in history--with Chavez's relatively tiny amount of power and allies in 1998--with the balls to stand up to the mightiest country in the world, with the power to disappear him from the face of the earth with a couple of phone calls, while going head-up against 100s of years of well-entrenched, institutionalized economic might in his own country. After failing at one coup, he came back, winning the support of the mass of his own people and winning, repeatedly, in elections certified more legitimate than our own, by neutral international observers. This guy didn't come from money or privilege or influence. He was a shitty paratrooper in the army, poor-ass school teachers for parents.

When he was removed in a coup--with the verified support of the United States--hundred of thousands of people went into the street to demand his return. You can't just write that off as: "well, he gave everyone hand-outs." If you do, you subscribe to a good-guys-bad-guys version of history that is hopelessly over-simplified. He came back and fearlessly kept talking shit about Bush and his domestic enemies, with no fear of death or shit else. A lesser man would have taken his quote-unquote fortune and moved to Miami. If our leaders in this country had one tenth of the balls on this guy, we wouldn't have half of the problems we do.

Mad props to Chavez just on that, never mind his efforts to improve the condition of the silent majority of his people.

Rest in peace to a real fucking man. Piss on his grave as much as you want, his name will be repeated, fondly, more times than any of ours. I can pretty much guarantee that. In my wildest dreams, I don't imagine accomplishing as much in a lifetime as this motherfucker did in just over a decade.

I highly recommend this documentary, if you haven't seen it. It's hard to find, but you can watch it on youtube:

Excellent points, especially about the painting of good guy/bad guy that we always get. Nothing is that simple, especially when international politics are concerned.

Yeah.

Something is wrong when this forum loves Drake, Justin Timberfake and Justin Beebleer and hates on a unbreakable South American Strongman that fought against the longest odds.

Let's all think about that for a moment.

I been researching him. He won 17 elections democratically and improved the lives of millions of Venezuelans.

He fought against the racism of the Branco elite against the morenos, indios and negros.

But on negative he cuddled up to people like Ahmenijad. (Of course the USA cuddles Saudi)

I think he was a good man, a strong leader but not without flaws

RE: Hugo Chavez Dead
I don't like quoting long posts but I will make an exception here and say that this was a post worthy of a standing ovation from someone that understands what's really going on. I thought that since guys on this forum were of the kind to think outside the box and many self acclaimed alpha, that they would have realized the farce that the western medias and in particular, the American one, led by CNN and Fox are playing and spoon feeding total BS to the emasculated American population. But in light of the answers in here, seems that unfortunately, quite a lot are still swallowing all the lies their media have been bringing them.

And anyone who believes that there is indeed free speech in North America or the Western world for that matter and true freedom in the US, then I've got a tropical island filled with nubile virgins to sell them in Antarctica.

If you claim to be red pill and think outside the box and that you are an a true alpha (a true alpha in the greater and broader sense is not just a guy who is a lady killer or tough looking or has a ton of money, but rather that he is willing to fight and die with his convictions and ideals, regardless of the opposition like Chavez!), stop listening to, reading and watching the medias of the betas and emasculated masses! Diversify your sources of news from around the world, from various countries, then you would start to understand what's really going on.

Tuth, you said it all in a very eloquent manner! Well done compadre!

RIP Commandante!

Thanks, VP. I just remembered a real conversation I had with a white* Venezuelan girl a few years back in a bar. This is it pretty much word for word.

Tuthmosis: So where are you from?
Venezuelan Girl: I'm from Venezuela.
Tuthmosis: Oh, were you born there?
Venezuelan Girl: No, but all my family is there.
Tuthmosis: What do you think of that Hugo Chavez guy?
Venezuelan Girl: Oh, my family hates him.
Tuthmosis: Is your family poor by any chance?
Venezuela Girl: [Turns her back without further words]
Tuthmosis: Troll

*I mention race above because, despite the fact that I left it out of my statement earlier, it is massively relevant. If you think "race" matters in the US, it matters that much more in South America. Race is supremely predictive of social class and mobility in the South-American countries in an even deeper way than it is in the United States. The long shadow of colonial and post-colonial racial hierarchy is still very visible all over South, and indeed, Latin America.

So, you have to consider that Hugo Chavez accomplished everything he did while being an indigenous-looking mestizo in a country with a long history of presidents who don't look like him. See for yourself, there's maybe one other guy who shares his complexion, never mind his angular Indian features. Despite the fact that most Latin Americans have an indigenous or African past, they tend to resolutely deny it. Elites especially deny, or downplay, Indian or black roots. This has concrete, traceable historical roots. The same goes for genealogical pedigree (by last name), which would be the subject for another post entirely.

This isn't to start a whole sub-conversation on race, but to further underscore this guy's alpha credentials. He not only pushed back against the most powerful military in the world, the might of the economic oligarchs in his own country, the power of the wealthiest corporations in the world, and the multinational media-propaganda machine hell-bent on smearing him 24/7, but also the force of hundreds of years of racial tradition that places people like him in the lower rungs of society as a matter of course. He recruited overwhelming majorities of his people in this struggle.

If your only argument back is that "yeah, but inflation is up" or "he didn't lower the crime rate enough" or "some random, shitty website says he amassed a huge fortune," you're just not paying attention.

Love him or hate him personally, this dude was exceptional.

Hugo Chavez meets Barack Obama--a man he has admitted publicly to admiring--for the first time at the Summit of the Americas. He takes the opportunity to hand him a copy of Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galleano's Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent, a book detailing the long history of economic and social exploitation of Latin America by imperial powers.

Mega alpha. Look at Obama's face.

What are your reasons?

- Giving easy asylum to FARC leaders and troops.
- Cutting Colombia's trade with them (52% of the exports) all the way to 0, forcing the whole country to refocus the trade and waste tons of meat directed to Venezuela, all without warning
- Allowing the country to become another siphon of drug trafficking, fueling Colombia's war.
- Giving FARC ammo and weapons before he was discovered in the Reyes' computers.
- Cutting off the frontier to all supplies they used to get from venezuela
- Making it impossible for anybody with Colombian ID to even visit, we would get jailed for "spionage"
- Demolishing bridges between frontier towns, bringing down all trade and mutually starving populations.
- Sending all his tank to the frontier, no less than 3 times for something that didn't concern him or his country.
- Putting statues up of Manuel Marulanda, one of the worst persons on this country's history. It would be like if Mexico put up statues of Bin Laden and starting praising his acts.

This is just off the top of my head. I don't want to continue and I think it's better to let the dead rest in peace. Perhaps he did good but for my country this guy was a total scorn. Many times we were on the brink of war just because he felt like it.

I completely disagree. Chavez was a complete narcissist until the bitter end. He was only able to get away with ruling the country for so long because of the country's immense oil wealth. Many people often overlook the fact that Venezuela is one of the wealthiest countries in the world. What Chavez did was buy support amongst the vast swaths of poor people, yet, ironically, with his unsustainable economic mismanagement, those who received his handouts were dependent on him for survival thanks to runaway inflation. Even in a country as rich as Venezuela, if you go to grocery stores in Caracas people are fighting over basic food shortages like butter and sugar. Chavez was power hungry and even from his sickbed refused to relinquish power. He undermined the very Constitution he introduced when he was too ill to attend his inauguration and deferred it to a later date, which created a constitutional crisis for Venezuela. In fact, it was Cuba, not Chavez, that governed Venezuela and still does. In exchange for oil, Cuba created the social, health and education programs that the Chavez government introduced. What a sad precedent for a country with the unique and proud history that Venezuela has.

As for the point about race, it's different in South America. It's more economic than racial down there. To the extent that black folks are worse off, it has more to do with the lack of social programs at the end of slavery to promote the integration of black people. This was especially true in Brazil. There was no "Jim Crow" style segregation which led to black people organizing and fighting for equality. Race is not as overtly part of one's identity as it is in the US. But that's a convo for another day.

I wouldn't say these are trivial arguments. It seems as though all the Chavez sentimentalists can point to is his "alphaness", his rhetoric, that he "stood up" to the USA, etc. even though his track record shows very little to stand on. Isn't this what Barack Obama was most criticized for? Promising a world of change but not delivering? Well Chavez is that x100.

The fact that an OPEC nation has rolling black outs tells you everything you need to know about his incompetence. Mull that over for a minute, a country that is fucking floating on energy can't even keep the lights on. A petro state like that should look like the fucking Dubai of Latin America if it was under competent leadership. How a nation with all that oil manages to be damn near bankrupt with more debt than the USA per capita, with their currency getting pummeled during a time that oil prices have gone into the stratosphere seems paradoxical, but only a communist nutcase can pull off a fiasco like that. There were shortages even of sugar. Sugar is one of Cuba's greatest exports and they had favorable trade policies with Cuba. How the hell were there sugar shortages?? They couldn't even get that right.

So his rhetoric makes you guys feel good, ok fine. You're entitled to that. And I won't say the man is wrong about everything. I think it's great that he wanted to spread equality. Hell, I think we need more economic equality here in the USA as well. But once you get past the rhetoric, what is there to really applaud? His tactics in silencing dissent? Controlling the media? Micromanaging prices and destroying the free market? Squashing their currency? Giving poor people gifts in exchange for votes?

As a leader, he was a disaster. But yeah, he was very charismatic and and alpha...But then so was Hitler.

I don't purport to have the solution for Latin America but Chavez pissed away a lot of $$ on dumb causes. Here's to hoping his replacement will be better for the average Venezualen!

Bolivian President Evo Morales: said he felt "destroyed" by Chavez's death. "It hurts, but we must stand united in this process of liberation, not only of Venezuela but of the whole region".

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos tweeted his condolences and gave a lengthy statement on Chavez's passing, saying that although the two had many differences, Chavez's death was a great loss for Venezuela and the whole region.

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said in a statement:"I was saddened to learn of the death of President Hugo Chavez today. As president of Venezuela for 14 years he has left a lasting impression on the country and more widely. I would like to offer my condolences to his family and to the Venezuelan people at this time."

United Nations, Russian UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin called Chavez a "great politician" and said his death was "a tragedy".

Former president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, also reacted to the news emotionally, according to the BBC, saying he was "proud" to have worked together with Chavez.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper offered his "condolences to the people of Venezuela." He stated: "At this key juncture, I hope the people of Venezuela can now build for themselves a better, brighter future based on the principles of freedom, democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights."

Author and Member of British Parliament George Galloway sent this tweet after Chavez's death: "Farewell Comandante Hugo Chavez champion of the poor the oppressed everywhere. Modern day Spartacus. Rest in Peace".

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff - herself a cancer survivor -"Today a great Latin American died. ... On many occasions, the Brazilian government did not fully agree with President Hugo Chavez but today, as always, we recognize in him a great leader, an irreparable loss and, above all, a friend of Brazil."

Ed Royce, Republican chairman of the U.S. House Foreign Relations Committee, had some scathing remarks for the late Venezuelan President:"Hugo Chavez was a tyrant who forced the people of Venezuela to live in fear. His death dents the alliance of anti-U.S. leftist leaders in South America. Good riddance to this dictator."

What the Canadian PM really meant to say was: "Thanks Hugo for all of those fine Venezuelan engineers who came to work in Canada's oil industry, your loss is our gain".

I actually worked under quite a few Venezuelans and they were top notch, especially considering that in Venezuela, they also extract heavy oil similar to Canada's in the Orinoco Belt: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orinoco_Belt

They brought a lot of new ideas and expertise to Canada and none that I met were to keen on going home anytime soon and pretty much all of them detested Chavez.

They also said that under Chavez, the country's cash cow was being run into the ground because the refineries weren't being properly run and maintained, which was evident after this happened a few months ago:

I'd consider working there one day if conditions on the ground improve, time will tell.

I'm ready to help Scheer put Trudeau back in the cuckshed where he belongs. HSLD
