The only reason Rahm can go against the liberal status-quo is that he's not running for re-election as Mayor of Chicago. By the time he runs again, it will be in a state-wide election (Senate or Governor) with a lot of middle-class rural white voters.

The key thing to be aware of here is that Chicago politics is almost comically factional down to the street level. Don't think House of Cards. Think Game of Thrones.

Rahm may not have been overruled by someone "higher", but rather simply had a cadre of low-level people who hate his guts - or the guts of somebody he's close to - ignore him and dare him to do something about it, or even deliberately set him up for an unwinnable crisis.

Leonard has it exactly right. They thought they could settle this in-house, by their usual sandlot baseball rules, because ninety-nine times out of one hundred, they are able to do that and it goes unnoticed. Someone in Foxx's office took their usual envelope full of cash and thought it was time to move on.

As I recall, former Governor Blagojevich said it himself in one of his rambling radio show death poems after his impeachment: all of his colleagues who helped bring him down were hypocrites, because they all knew they do business the same way. He merely got caught.

In an interview on Today, Tina Glandian claimed that Smollett did not recognize the Abel and Ola Osundairo when they attacked him on January 29 and that it still has not been proven that it was them, despite the fact that Smollett identified a photograph of the pair as his attackers before he was ever arrested and even though they had just been on the phone with him.
