They're out there but any genre, especially comedies, are going to be cyclical. And a lot of the simple, smaller budget dramas are shifting to series on streaming services. Movie ad budgets have skyrocketed. An $8 million movie like Revenge of the Nerds would cost $20-25 today with another $20-25 in ads. It would have to clear $80-100 million to break even and that's just unlikely to happen especially since you can't go 2 weeks without a new blockbuster being introduced that will eat up your audience.

The release schedule is packed with big budget movies and many include all the elements the prime demographic wants. Comedy, action, incredible VFX, scifi, etc - Marvel incorporates it all in their movies...a few of them even have a compelling story. I feel like the cycle is wrapping up for superhero movies though. The TV shows are fading and that usually means the ride almost over.

A decade from now people will wonder where all of those cool superhero movies went. All we have today a preachy comedies and sappy dramas.

2 reviews with spoilers:

It's bad, really bad.

They have this sexism angle up like crazy. Somehow they forget Top Gun from the fucking 1980s where female top pilots were also shown albeit the reality of a male dominated field was just normal and is normal to this day. Women are badly badly suited due to massive biological drawbacks to ever become many combat pilots - they have far inferior proven orientation skills, slower reaction time, react worse under stress and they stomach acceleration more badly - even male pilots pass out for a brief time under certain conditions - for women that is just a disaster.

Either way - the spoilers here a few:

+ She is the Mary of Mary Sues
+ She is an insufferable stuck-up bitch in the beginning and remains that way to the end with no character arc
+ Nick Fury gets truly his eye scratched out by her fucking cat! This Alien cat just randomly scratches his eye. The old Nick Fury was a WWII vet in the comics, they made him black which can be ok if they at least made him into a Vietnam Vet who used Alien tech to age slower or something like that. He could have lost the eye fighting some other Aliens in the past, or he could have blazed his path through a legion of Vietkong in the 1970s losing an eye in process, but no - it was Captain Bitchface's cat scratching him randomly just for lolz. They really hate men - even black masculine men - at Disney.
+ Oh - and they made the old Captain Mar-Vell into an old white woman - the old one was seemingly a great story that they could have told in the future, but of course they sex-change him and then pick a granny. Everyone knows that grannies are the best.

And yes - don't spend a cent on that crap. Similar to Solo the people have to send a message. Too many normies will go and watch that shit anyway.

People spending money on that propaganda shit is a reason and proof that the West deserves annihilation by immigration. End-stage Rome....

Carol's BFF is a female, black, single mother, ace pilot whose daughter remembers auntie Carol even though Carol was abducted by the Kree 7 years ago when the girl was 3ish. Also, Carol's BFF will abandon her parental responsibilities and leave her daughter with neighbors while she flies into space on a near-suicide mission - and this is presented as the right thing to do because fulfilling your dreams is more important than being a good mother.

The twist ruins the possibility of a Secret Invasion storyline to replace the decade of movies leading up to Thanos.

Yep. What they did with the Skrulls was rather unexpected... Until you relate the Skrulls to modern day refugees.

So not only is there misguided girl power / mary sue subtext. They threw in misguided refugee recognition subtext.

Honestly even though people say if you don't like what they are trying to push, don't watch it, I promise there will be guys here who will watch it and then come and say how bad the movie was.

Amazing Lucas is a big wanna-like-every-MCU superhero fan and obviously even he could not like it.

The villain of Captain Marvel is not a Skrull because they literally have him say: "We are not terrorists, we are refugees!"

Indeed - the villains of Captain SJW are white cis-males, because they are mainly shown in a terrible way.

The mainstream is celebrating like they did with Solo prematurely praising the big interest in the movie.

But I think there is a larger issue here. What the hell happened to people that their lives revolve around superhero movies like they're still a bunch of 5-year-olds? How did we regress to this?

When I was in my teens and twenties, the desire of my friends and I was to see thoughtful movies, like Woody Allen's "Crimes And Misdemeanors" or "The World According To Garp" or even "When Harry Met Sally."

There were also comedies with a message, like "The Flamingo Kid," "Revenge Of The Nerds," and "Big."

Am I missing something or do they not make movies like that anymore? Movies now seem to be either big productions aimed at global audiences or simplistic didactic dramas with the theme "White Man Bad!"

At least I have online access to old films I missed back in the day. Because nothing in the theaters ever compels me to go anymore.
Desperately Seeking Susan was a cinematic masterpiece that perfectly captured the zeitgeist of the mid-late 80s unlike any other movie and most consider it dogshit. If they rereleased it in the theater I would happily spend $20 to see it in imax 3D over any of this comic book shit.

"Desperately Seeking Susan" came out in 1985. Out of curiosity, I looked up the top-grossing movies of that year: "Witness," "Cocoon," "Out Of Africa," and "The Color Purple" all made it into the top ten.

"Back To The Future" was the #1 movie and "D.S.S." came in at #31. It was definitely a different world back then. The changes, I think, came when Hollywood started pitching product to the global audience, so it could make bigger profits. That's when things got dumbed down. Out went talky think-pieces with subtle ideas and in came simplistic comic book fare.

Not that there isn't a place for Marvel stuff. There is. It's just that these days, it's a much bigger piece of the pie.

I predict CM will do ok in the US but tank in China. Americans tend to go to opening weekend on a movie just because of the hype. Chinese wait and see what their friends say and don't spend a dime if it's poorly recieved.

CM will make 400 or 500 million, but that will be considered a failure by Disney.

But what they heck do I know? Maybe it will be a blockbuster and make 800 million. It's all clown world.

< I looked into the fine print now - when you move your cursor over the question mark of the viewer rating they say that they count only the ratings of 3,5 or above. Since the majority give the movie less, then it's good. It's possible that they changed this metric as late as today. Everything for Disney and propaganda.

And yes - people report getting their comments deleted as well. They would love to wipe away everyone who disagrees with their communist politburo view and call them troll like they used to call traitor/counter-revolutionary or class enemy.

It's already at $188 mil worldwide supposedly.
It will do OK / well simply because : MCU.
However, I doubt it will get the repeat viewings that other films get, to take it well past 500 mil.
However again. It doesn't really have any competition of note, until Shazam is released on April 5th.

If it winds up sitting at the bottom of the MCU pile, well behind Thor: Ragnorok & Doctor Strange. Disney will have to take note.

The MCU has an untarnished brand akin to Star Wars before the Force Awakens opened.

Still - the signs are there - the vid is funny - the 3 stages of SJW-movie success:

1) Delete negative reviews
2) Post positive bot reviews
3) Open to empty theaters or witness a quick drop-off as word-of-mouth is terrible
4) Call it a success despite making a loss or barely breaking even / alternatively blame toxic fandom/ toxic White males / trolls for the failure

If it makes any decent money, then double down on the feminism and social justice - make it all about a body-positive tranny Muslim superheroine with Aspergers.

Not to derail the thread, and while Alita is far from a perfect film, it is the antithesis of Captain Marvel.

In Alita (possible light spoilers about the direction of the story, but nothing specific!):
  • SJW panned it for the reasons below and because it doesn't push the agenda, audiences love it for same reasons.
... SJW critics love Captain Marvel, audiences don't like it (the score was lower but Rotten Tomatoes deleted a lot of reviews. Obviously)
  • The main character bonds with and develops a loving relationship with the father figure
  • She relies on the father figure to protect and care for her at several points in the film
  • She has a male love interest for whom in the film she offers to sacrifice everything for because she loves him.

...Captain Marvel? I won't see it but I understand Carol only goes as far as developing a friendship with another woman. Sisters doing it for themselves!
  • SJWs critics hated it because the main character is slim, feminine and shows vulnerability. Jennifer Connelly's character lounges in stockings and suspenders for no real reason at all. Whats the alternative, Alita: Battle Whale Large And In Charge Feminist?
  • She starts off not knowing anything about herself or the world but as she develops, she learns her mission.

...Captain Marvel? She starts out infallible and stays that way
  • Even outside the films, Brie said something along the lines of 'the films I make aren't for white dudes, they are meant for women, biracial women etc'

...Rosa said of Alita something along the lines of "there are many people who don't know what their mission is and are trying to find it and even though Alita is a girl, hopefully it is a story that anyone can understand and relate to"
  • There was a gofundme where you could donate to get young girls to see Captain Marvel for free. So empowering! Give your money to Disney and Brie!

...Meanwhile the Alita group worked with openbionics to literally empower a girl (and others) with motorised prosthetics.
  • Alita the cyborg has emotion
    [Image: RRBqCKf.png]
Captain Marvel the human does not
    [Image: gNZD6of.png]

James Cameron has produced quite a few memorable female characters and I think Alita will still be admired in 20 years like Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor. In 20 years time, "who was Captain Marvel?"

When I watched Infinity War, it was reasonably entertaining but I pretty much forgot about it when I walked out of the theatre. I was still thinking about Alita for a few days after I saw it, probably because I'm a bit of a retro nerd - if you like stories set in dystopian futures like Blade Runner, Deus Ex, Syndicate, then Alita will be up your alley.

Captain Marvel just came out, Alita has been out for a month. El oh el.

It’s not just that movie reviewers are SJWs, they are part of what’s called “access journalism.” The studio will grant screenings to vetted critics prior to its release. But there’s an unspoken rule at play. “Write a good review, or no more paid trips to LA/NY to see movies in advance.”

Due to purging reviews, the rotten tomatoes score crept up over 60 for a brief period today. It has since dropped to 57%.

Apparently Captain Meh-vel made $455mil worldwide (US - 155 / World - 300) in it's first weekend.

I call shenanigans.
With that in mind, if the reports are rigged or Disney bought unsold tickets to so many empty theaters.
They'd be shooting themselves in the foot anyway, attempting to generate fake success.

You don't win friends (nor maintain a popular franchise) with being woke.

Star Wars didn't dwindle overnight, yet it did dwindle.

I don't think that they bought tickets.
They bought reviews in Bangladesh and they pressured the Rotten Shills to manipulate the ratings, but that is about it.

It's a powerful franchise - currently the strongest one since Disney already bombed the Star Wars brand. Wonder Woman might have made 1,2 bio $ if BatmanVSuperman were better.

Most normies are just normies and there is literally nothing else of substance. Plus - they dropped Alita out of a ton of cinemas - strangely enough only for the first week of Captain Marvel and then returning Alita back again some theaters.

The dropoff will be interesting overall.

An MCU film making a fair bit of change is no a surprise.
Yet no other secondary character of the MCU has faced the disinterest & derision that Captain Marvel encountered.
Rotten Tomatoes fiasco...
Talk of empty cinemas on opening night & opening day...
Mediocre reviews across the internet (not just the fan-boy types)...

Granted it is the first MCU film in awhile. Yet this weekend, the general audience had to learn the hard way that even the MCU is susceptible to weak & woke film making.
As such, I can only imagine it will be the Tumblr crowd who would pay to see CM again a 2nd or third time; so yes the audience drop off in the weeks to come should be interesting.
