Now I'm less pissed, and more utterly confused. This is a pointless show of force... but who is he showing, and why?
The more I think about this, the more I think this is 3D chess. Missiles that can target runways and fuel tanks at a heavily defended airbase could just easily target their jets, their control facilities, or hell, some of Assad's senior general's houses. The fact that Trump opted not to target anything of value tells me that he didn't intend for this to lead to any escalation.
This puts an end to the stupid Russia allegations, and also sends a message to Assad that he needs to knock off the chemical weapons shit. It also serves as a reminder that even a more isolationist US is willing to use weapons if it feels it's necessary.
I'm happy to entertain objections to this theory, provided they can explain why Trump's "retaliatory strike" retaliated against a couple thousand bucks worth of fuel and concrete that probably won't even knock the airfield out of commission for a full day.

RE: The Syria conflict thread [re-titled]
Regardless of any nonsense about 4d chess from Scott Adams and the like and regardless of a lack of casualties, this action has set the precedent for the next 3.5 years regarding Syria.
"The CIA and the islamists will stage false flag chemical attacks and the USA will 'respond' with unilateral missile attacks".
So what the ever living fuck is the endgame? That's the fucking real question here. Because there is nothing about this move that makes any sense in the frame of peaceful withdrawal from that region OR the destruction of the islamist psychopaths.
p.s. This is just beyond retarded. Can anyone over in the US grab some random passer-by and ask them if they give a shit about Syria? Grab ten people in random order.
Show me a popularity poll that shows Trump taking a hit because he wasn't standing up to Assad!
This is sheer political skullduggery and it's exactly the kind of thing Trump was elected to avoid. Hell, he was elected on faith by the people of the US against all the demands of the old-media and now we're supposed to believe that those crooked cunts can just splash some images of a few supposed gas attack victims on the channels that nobody gives a shit about anymore and Trump is suddenly "trapped" into responding?
It's a bloody ridiculous notion.

RE: The Syria conflict thread [re-titled]
Secretary of State Tillerson will be traveling to Italy and Russia soon.
Via Department of State Press Releases.
Quote:Secretary of State Tillerson To Travel to Lucca and Moscow
Press Statement
Mark C. Toner
Acting Spokesperson
Washington, DC
April 5, 2017
U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will travel to Lucca, Italy, April 9-11 to attend the G-7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. The G-7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting provides a venue for the foreign ministers to discuss global political and security issues of mutual concern. Their discussions will set the stage for the G-7 Leaders’ Summit which President Trump will attend in Taormina, Italy in May 2017. On the margins of the G-7 ministerial, Secretary Tillerson will also meet with several of his counterparts for bilateral discussions.
The Secretary will travel to Moscow, Russia, on April 12, where he will meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and other Russian officials to discuss Ukraine, counterterrorism efforts, bilateral relations and other issues, including the DPRK and Syria. This trip is part of our effort to maintain direct lines of communication with senior Russian officials and to ensure U.S. views are clearly conveyed, including on next steps in Minsk implementation.

I'm glad that it only cost $100 million in missiles to wreck a few airport towcarts and the night janitor's Honda Civic.

RE: The Syria conflict thread [re-titled]
How quickly they can be repaired is not the issue.
The lack of a loss of life is not the issue.
The message is the issue.
"We will either poison your people or fake it, then we will use it as a justification to escalate militarily."
That is the message, loud and clear, or does anyone here actually think that Assad and Putin are dumb enough to commit legitimate war crimes at this stage of affairs?
So now that the "poison Syrians and then avenge them" narrative is in place things are going to play out with textbook predictability. It essentially gives full control of regional foreign policy to the CIA.
"Yeah, we just gas a few civilians (or dump cyanide in their drinking water, or whatever) and Trump has to 'stay the course'. Easy money..."

I recognize that this puts me in the minority here, but I'm not 100% down with the "False Flag" narrative. I agree that it's improbable that Assad would suddenly decide to commit "suicide by Trump", as Scott Adams called it, but history is rife with people who do stupid, improbable, and self-defeating things. It's also rife with plain old fuckups. Someone easily could've misinterpreted a message and used chem weapons when they weren't supposed to, or loaded the wrong weaponry onto a plane. The false flag narrative is dominant enough online and among Trump supporters that there's no way Trump didn't hear about it, so he must've rejected it. Did he reject it because he's getting bad info from his intelligence people, or because he knows something we don't? That, I don't know.
In any case, if the scenario you're describing comes to pass, I agree that it would be very bad. We'll have to watch carefully to see what happens.

I'm also not calling it for false flag - not yet anyway. It's entirely possible, for example, that Assad felt emboldened by the indications that Trump wasn't going to intervene in Syria and therefore decided to see how far Trump could be pushed. Sometimes the camelfuckers make bad decisions.
Saddam, for example. You don't get to be dictator without a modicum of brains and a good dollop of cunning. Most people attribute his being dumb enough to invade Kuwait to the infamous "green light" given by April Glaspie as he massed troops on Iraq's southern border. Others have said that Saddam believed the US would only respond with verbal condemnation.

RE: The Syria conflict thread [re-titled]
Okay...I may have missed this part of today's news.
Quote:Tillerson: ‘Steps Are Under Way’ to Remove Assad From Power in Syria
On Thursday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said “steps are under way” to form an international coalition to remove the president of Syria Bashar al-Assad after Tuesday’s chemical bombings in Syria.
Partial transcript as follows:
TILLERSON: Well obviously, the events that have occurred in Syria with the chemical weapons attack here in the past day I think have just horrified all of us and brought to the front pages and to our television screens as well the tragedy that is part of the Syrian conflict. There is no doubt in our mind and the information we have supports that Syria, the Syrian regime under the leadership of Bashar al-Assad are responsible for this attack and I think further it’s very important that the Russian government consider carefully their continued support for the Assad regime.
REPORTER: Does Assad have to go?
TILLERSON: Assad’s role in the future is uncertain and with the acts that he has taken, it would seem that there would be no role for him to govern the Syrian people.
REPORTER: And what steps is the United States prepared to take in order to remove him from power?
TILLERSON: The process by which Assad would leave I think requires an international community effort, both to first defeat ISIS within Syria, to stabilize the Syrian country, to avoid further civil war and then to work collectively with our partners around the world through a political process that would lead to Assad leaving.
REPORTER: So will you and President Trump organize an international coalition to remove Assad?
TILLERSON: Those steps are under way.
REPORTER: Has President Trump been talking about that with other leaders.
TILLERSON: We are considering an appropriate response which violates all previous U.N. resolutions, violates international norms and long-held agreements between parties including the Syrian regime, the Russian government and all other members of the U.N. Security Council. It’s a serious matter. It requires a serious response. Thank you.
I do not like where this is heading.
