RE: teaching english abroad
So I started reading this thread because I was interested in the topic. But the first 2 pages are garbage.
So I am going to post my shit.

I moved to Poland recently. Got a job in my field.... the down side is that it pays about $4.50 an hour.
I have been told by someone that speaks English that I can ask around the english speaking school and probably get a job earning more like $15-$20 an hour.
I don't even have to be that good. Just having conversations with them and correcting them. Its like 30 hours a week to, so thats also a bonus.

Does anyone have some light to shed on this?

Insulting posters from the first two pages, hm? That's gonna win you a lot of friends, here?

RE: teaching english abroad
So now that I have a destination in mind: Cambodia, comparatively speaking, which city would you prefer to teach in? As for cost - Sihanoukville is the cheapest, Siem Reap is second, and Phnom Penh is 3rd. As for quality of living, how are the internet, women, food and night-life aspects? I'm reading up on all 3 but if any of you has been to one or all of these places let me know your opinion.. I'll be eternally grateful. Tongue

Edit*

So Siem Reap is the second cheapest, closest to the Thailand border (incase I have to do a border run ;D).
Phnom Penh is the most expensive, in the middle of the two (so I can travel to either for a visit).
Sihanoukville is the cheapest and on a beach but the farthest from the Thailand border.

I guess it comes down to wage vs cost of living vs women and entertainment. I think I'm leaning towards Sihanouk because of the beach. That seems like a definite plus.

That's interesting, because I reviewed the first two pages of this thread and it looks like Roosh contribute three posts within those two pages.

Now are you saying that all of the posts on the first two pages are garbage or just the posts not written by the founded and moderator of this forum?

I ALSO read Spalax's post to suggest that he started to read this thread because he was interested in this topic, but then after he supposedly read the first two pages of this thread, he decided that he would rather NOT continue reading the thread implying that his time was too valuable or for whatever other unstated reason and he would rather just post his question - that may have been a more considerate way to phrase his post about why he did NOT read the thread.. but instead for some reason he felt inclined to throw out derogatory comments regarding the first two pages. Huh

You don't HAVE to be white. But I think a lot of guys will probably tell you that most Asian countries will equate whiteness with English ability. You just face an uphill battle if you are not white. Hell, even white South Africans can have trouble because they are from Africa (according to one guy I spoke with)

This is a men's self-improvement forum and we're sitting around discussing how to obtain fake ESL teaching certifications.

Maybe something is lost on me.

The ESL industry is a joke in Asia, and ESL certificates cost a small fortune. Not everyone has the means to drop $1800 on a CELTA and take 2 months off work to complete it. I can see where you're coming from, but I think the potential for self-improvement by living in another country for an extended period of time more than justifies faking an ESL certificate.

Yeah I even have a neighbor chic (HB8 hehe) who taught in Taiwan who took a course for cert...but even she told me you could just get a fake one for beginning teaching there.

Sweet Pea said it very well. MaleDefined I've no doubt you're right in most of the world and that spending the $$ and a substantial amount of time getting certified would be ideal.

Ha, I think the most people get a CELTA for the greater job opportunities in a wider range of locations, many of which have beautiful women and fantastic culture.

ESL can be a great way of location hopping, particularly if you're young and haven't decided where you'd like to live yet. A CELTA is a great way towards making that easier.

I'm about to sign up for an online TEFL course. 120 hours for $240 or so. I guess they send you the certificate after you successfully pass and complete it.

Anyone know if these things are legit and accepted in Asia? A Chinese employer (or possibly a recruiter acting as one) told me online TEFLs don't matter, as long as you just have one, but I'm not sure I trust her.

The point I tried to make is that if you're interested in being a teacher, why stop yourself with this TEFL or CELTA degree and try this out at home to transition internationally in a diplomatic school? Refer to some of my earlier posts in this thread, but it seems like we're having two completely different conversations here.

I understand what you're saying but for many people teaching ESL isn't a career move but a way of travelling and earning cash at the same time so they have little incentive to go down that route.

China likely doesn't care, but here in Vietnam, an online TEFL is not eligible for a work permit. It varies by country, and it doesn't help that governments change requirements frequently. I didn't learn anything in my TEFL course. 240 isn't too bad for an online class. I would only suggest spending big bucks on this if you really think you'll be a teacher for a long time. I'm only doing this temporarily, so my opinion will be different from someone who is a career teacher.

Yep that's a good idea, and your previous posts were interesting, as I'd never thought of that route before.

With people I've spoken with and what I've read, the fake route allows you to see if you like it before jumping into it more seriously. Basically an illegitimate sort of apprenticeship to test the waters of living abroad and teaching...a way of staying afloat and traveling. It's an idea entirely lost in the U.S. which would be nice to see again (how many unused degrees out there, how many doctors/lawyers/professionals/etc are locked in to jobs they hate).

I'm choosing this route in a way by picking Taiwan where a cert isn't required. My plan, albeit very tentative, would be see if I like it, if I go for more than a year or so, go get a real certification.

Cocksman, don't buy this! save your money!

Three routes with TEFL certificates:

1) You do a 'proper' CELTA to open up jobs (like it did for me in Bangkok) (Costs an arm and a leg but it does help you in the market in some countries).

2) You get a fake one. Worth the same as one of those bogus ones but you will save hundreds of dollars

3) You find the cheapest 'non-fake' bogus TEFL certificate. There are loads on the internet for less than a hundred dollars.

There are hundreds of companies offering these crappy TEFL things that have the same worth as toilet paper. Give them a bodyswerve, or at least just nab the cheapest one possible.

Yep, Taiwan ONLY requires a degree and a person from the anglosphere. That's it.

Korea and Taiwan do not require any form of TEFL if you want a job there

Sweet pea what sort of uphill battle? Thanks.

Jay in every English thread it gets brought up how whites are pretty much guaranteed work for simply being white where as everyone else does not have it like that .

I am NOT denying that there is some truth to white privilege, and the fact that it is even more prevalent in some areas of the world than other areas; however, your earlier comment seems to attempt to oversimplify and to provoke controversial discussion.

I glanced through your previous posts, which did NOT take too long because they are short and they do NOT add much detail or substance or value. You tend to ask a lot of questions without really saying much about yourself or what you are looking for, for example.

So why don't you tell us what you are looking for, and where you plan to go and what are your plans? Are you thinking that if you are of a non-white race, then teaching English abroad is foreclosed or more difficult? What kinds of examples or experiences do you have in the real world that would help you to conclude one way or another?

There are a variety of ways to address these kinds of questions and concerns to provide some meat to the topic, besides your one-liner questions.
