Not sure if anyone ever saw this series but I thought it was pretty interesting (sans the cheese especially on the 1st season, I much preferred the 2nd)

I've wanted to do an off the grid setup for a long time ....picking the location is the hard part.

RE: Assembling and training a local "a-team" for survival during conflict
Well what do you do when you have to rebuild? What happens when your band/tribe can finally settle in one area semi permanently? You grow food for consumption because if you population grows it can't subsist on game and random berry bushes around when all the easily found food from looting is exhausted. Even if your band/ tribe doesn't increase.. knowing plants, herbs and such and what they can be used for is smart. The idea is to have many different means of being fed so you do not rely on just one.Seedlings if you have an actual house or warm spot can be growing indoors until there are large enough, or when you are smart enough to figure out when the last frost is you can grow them. You don't just plop a bunch of seeds into dirt and it magically becomes food. It takes work to know the ins and out like I said about climate conditions. Gardening with perma culture where you grow food for a permanent settlement is ideal. Most people can't fucking keep beans alive. Civilization came to be because of agricultre that permitted the people to safely reproduce and grow the settlements knowing that there is an abundence of extra food. When there is no means of keeping everyone in a tribe fed well, then the whole maslow's heirarchy of needs occurs. If you are just trying to survive right after the happening then you may have access to all sorts of nution from looting and hunting. When to build something permanent you start to farm and not just one crop.

Growing tomatoes maybe not the best idea, and as I said just ONE crop ( monoculture) is not smart.... but knowing which plants you can eat where you find them is useful. People throughout history, even some of the local bands in my area found sources of food to keep them going year round. The natives on the coast and river gathered salmon, and ate all kinds of clams, and such that were available.

If you are thinking purely in terms of survival over the short term than growing your own food may not be essential. If there are places to loot with large caches of food or areas where wild plants grow and game for eating, sure. If your band is safe and the situation is not dire then growing food is essential. You can only last so long on venison and the odd fish or whatnot. You need the vitamins and such and fibre in the diet. You need veggies and fruit and I am sure somewhere on this forum guys have talked about proper nutrition when trying to get fit.

Gardening to me anyway is easy. IF you have the right knowledge of where you are. For example out east past the mountains the climate is quite good for peaches, grapes, even possible to grow small watermelons, apricots, apples, provided that there is good irrigation from the lakes near by at least. Some of the farms are almost adjacent to the lakes.

When you've killed off enough roving bands of thugs/retards and most of the plebs are dead or eslewhere growing some food would be nice. You can't just dismiss the whole idea outright. Short term, go wild, shoot people, shoot animals, raid areas for food. Do the road warrior thing When things cool down, then you can start establishing small settlements and move on from there. I do not think you can be nomadic forever.

RE: Assembling and training a local "a-team" for survival during conflict
And if you're worried about people coming in and killing you, you have, as its been said ,people doing watch shifts, people with weapons and that kind of expertise that you can trust. Places where you can bug out, places that are easier to defend like hills and places to hide. I assume guys like yourselves can figure out how to start an actual community and if need be run like hell to another safe spot to gather in .

You do not just start a tomato patch and hope to god no one comes by. I think with enough knowledge, the right people, enough ammunition, good maintenance of weapons, water, food, etc,etc A band of people can find a place to settle for awhile if people are smart enough to delegate tasks and to work together as a community similar to the old Manorial system, ( Feudalism in Middle Ages). If that kind of system of localized societies did not work then some of us here would not have been born. There were reasons why serfs existed. They didn't survive because of chance or because of being near the woods. People banded together because of raids from Vikings for example for protection, they built forts and eventually castles, they had a warrior class, and usually some kind of Lord. Small towns, blacksmith, mills, etc, etc.

I hazard a guess and think that may start say 10 years after if its such a happening event that the infrastructure is completely fucked and we are thrust back into the dark ages. For the short term go bananas and kill people that cross your path and threaten you and your pals.

RE: Assembling and training a local "a-team" for survival during conflict
Rebuilding and recreating society is a wholly different enterprise. If you take a glance you can see it portrayed badly in the Walking Dead comic.

Everyone has different ideas on what to do in such a situation, but the best would be to reach big numbers in a stable benevolently authoritarian system fast. You need non-psychopathic guys in the armed forces and cops upholding law and order and defending the community - non-psychopathy and a good heart has to be strangely enough the first criteria vs combat ability. The elite usually did the opposite in past times and still does so up to a degree - hiring thugs first.

Then you attract as many people as possible of similar kind who are willing to work and recreate society - knowledge, education, manual labor, engineers, inventors.

But that is mainly mental masturbation in our times - we are 9 billion and we are incredibly far spread with knowledge especially being available across the globe. So long as some smart populations remain, then humanity will keep on advancing. Even the partly anti-science and oppressive system of the current globalist bunch will one day trip and falter and be replaced with the next step forward.

On the topic of conflict when society has actually collapsed (or not present), does any know how to make steel from iron ore?
I remembe reading a book that had been produced in the Victorian era, but I can't find the procedure anywhere.
The ability to make something lighter and stronger than iron is a massive gamechanger if you're looking to survive in some dsytopian world where order has collapsed.

I'm not sure how practically feasible this is for most men, but I did find this guy's videos an interesting watch:

Buy a good belt knife (not a tacticool mall ninja knife.) A Chicago Cutlery/Old Hickory butcher knife will do.

As for guns....one of the safest bets is to buy or build a quality AR15. Ammo is available at walmart. Quality magazines are available for $10-15.

A good non magnified red dot optic is also an advantage. People can make hits past three hundred yards with one. Especially if you get a 2 inch moa dot scope. Aimpoint Pro is a sure bet.

Have a quality hand gun in a caliber that is readily available. Get a good holster and practice shooting.

A shotgun and/or bolt action rifle are also things to consider. A regular shot barrel can shoot slugs and shot out of it. 20 guage is a very good size for home or personal defense.

If you are going to carry a gun or transport them on a regular basis: dress in a way to not draw attention. Try to blend in. No tactical clothing. Wear good shoes, in case you have to run.

Carry long guns in some kind of bag that does not look like a rifle case. Padded guitar cases are awesome for this.

I purposefully stopped driving a car, to spend money on other things. I took my bicycle and the city bus to the gunstore and picked up my semi auto mp5. I put it is a medium sized duffle bag (it came in a kinda big plastic case.) Rode two different buses home and no one knew what I was carrying at all.

This stuff is easy to do. You can get caught though. But most of the time...are most people going to think some one is carrying a gun and ammo in a high schooler back pack?

Not really, considering the amount of scrap metal that would be lying around. Figuring out how to make the fuel for a welding torch would be a better thing to learn.

Learning how to turn wood into charcoal and wood gas would be quite useful. If you filter the soot out of the gas you can use it to run anything that would run on propane.

It depends on where you end up. And whether certain groups have previously sequested metal - as happened in England during the World Wars. Imagine if you escape a sinking ship and wind up on a large desert island. In military terms, using steel over iron is a huge advantage. Engines, handguns, aeroplanes, tanks etc are all possible. Instead of horses and cannons. Obviously steel production is something that tends to happen when a society starts from scratch with substantial manpower, not isolated groups in a Bosnia style conflict.

I'd also look at using rapeseed to produce diesel.

Just mentioning - Diphtheria has nothing to do with malnourishment or diet. It is entirely bacteriological.

Anyhow, since this isn't a generic "end of civilisation" thread and is meant to be fairly specific it might be worth while to get it back on track.

The reality is that if you want to get a team of guys together for whatever then you're going to need to start with guys you know already. This probably means guys from work or sporting teams. If you're not on a sports team of some variety already then it might be a good time to consider joining one. Don't presume contact sports. If anything you probably want guys from non-contact sports backgrounds. They're more likely to be introspective types who've identified the same civilisational pitfalls fast approaching us.

You can open the matter with some light geo-political banter but keep it neutral. Survival doesn't give a shit about red/blue. Avoid all political big-mouths at any cost. Many are interested in little more than fantasy scenario gun-play against the redneck/faggot hordes.

Eventually drop "do you ever wonder if things could go 'Hurricane Katrina' around here, or even all over America?"

If they admit that they worry about it then you can get to joking about forming a zombie apocalypse survival unit and then simply start planning realistic training around the "joke" threat.

Hygiene is sometimes the most important thing. Have some small and large trash bags, especially if you might need to deal with human waste. Bacteria can travel long distances, so don't dig a pit in your backyard if the porcelain throne isn't working: you will get sick. Have some extra soap and sanitizer. Store extra tap water for cleaning (rotate every three months). Have a way to wash your clothes without a washing machine (wool grows less bacteria).

Hunters and fishing buddies are more likely to join in and are better equipped in the first place. They're also likely to have seen the behavior of "others" in nature. Let's just say that appreciation of nature is not a global phenomenon at this point in time. Sports teams are often beta and blue pill by design, since they focus so strongly on literal beta behavior (following, fixed positions with a system, etc).
