That will do nothing to help. The cellphone company tracks all of that information on its own, including a permanent record of your locations, who you call, etc.....then the government has back door access to the cell phone companys servers as do some advertisers.

Basically all of these "privacy concerns" are stupid. Simply by virtue of using a cellphone under your real name you are giving away more information than any app will ever take.

Re, the App.

I am actually pretty impressed by Niantic. Ingress had an enormous amount of potential but did not have anywhere near the amount of "charm" as Pokemon. It also was unique in that it offered a way to monetize the game that did not directly interfere with player activities in the same way that other F2P games have a pay to win scheme where you need to continually buy in game items in order to advance. It was fairly obvious that Ingress's only real problem was the lack of mainstream appeal.

Doing the same thing with Pokemon solves all those problems. However I am surprised that they were able to make a deal like this with Nintendo. Nintendo is notoriously protective of its IP and it is extremely rare that they even allow it to be used in anything other than first party productions. They also have a reputation for being extremely difficult to work with. They were borderline abusive of their suppliers back when the NES first came out, and one of my classmates in my MBA program worked with Nintendo in the procurement division of one America's biggest big box retailers. What he told me didn't go into much detal but he confirmed that Nintendo is still a nightmare to work with.

Overall I think it's a good business venture. While revenue will no doubt decline as the fad goes away, it will still be strong and no doubt there will be new monetization opportunities as they expand the games systems. I actually think the biggest risk is their partnership with Nintendo given that Nintendo acts like a bi-polar, borderline chick with their business dealings. It is not inconceivable that they would decide to pull the plug if Niantic does something they don't like or that they will force Niantic to implement stupid ideas that would work on a 3DS or Wii but are terrible ideas for mobile platforms.

The guy I responded to was talking about people reading my emails. How can that happen, when there's no link between my smartphone and my main email account?

Everything I do on my smartphone can be linked to my real identity, given access to the provider's servers. But:
Everything I do on my smartphone is completely disconnected from my internet activity on my desktop.
When I download an app like pokemon GO, it can give backdoor access to my phone, but it does not give access to the provider's servers.

No person or agency can use my smartphone as a means to read my emails, and only people with access to the provider's servers can even learn my real name, no matter how deeply their software digs into the phone itself.

I drove by the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica yesterday and there were a TON of girls playing.

4. This is the BETA version, so they haven't added battling other trainers or trading pokemon yet, that will be added in the full release and should give the game some "stickability".

This probably works, but not for iOS since apps are "sandboxed" and I don't remember Google putting in an API for offline maps to share data on iOS.
