My thought is Assad just beat Trump at 81D Chess™. Assad realized gassing an Al-Qaeda affiliate wouldn't do much to hurt his image to loyal Syrians and allies, he also realized Trump would respond. Trump's response now strengthens the resolve of Syria's allies to support Assad further. Assad can use this support to end the conflict in his favor.

Pretty surprising. This seems to be a complete opposite from what one tends to see scouring comments sections to judge reactions. I think this is strike two with Putin, one more and it's war. Putin has put up with a LOT of shit the past couple years, he thought once Obama was gone there'd be light at the end of the tunnel, that his patience would pay dividends for Russia. I wouldn't put much faith in a poll conducted by a website with any political slant. If Vox and Salon put up a poll on their sites, the results would likely be opposite.

Edit: this was published in YouTube by a channel affiliated with the Russian military, so it's authentic. Russian military spokesmen claim only 23 of 59 Tomahawks reached target. 10 Syrian soldiers killed, 6 Miguel's destroyed in repair bays, as well as some supply depots, a radar station, and misc administrative buildings. The runways or planes parked in the open were not damaged. US forces explicitly avoided hits on those parts of the base that might have housed Russian soldiers.

In other words, this was a warning, not a full-out strike.

Probably... I know the people of France were mostly opposed to the Iraq war from the start. I'm not sure why Macron made such a statement.
