RE: The Syria conflict thread [re-titled]
What did they fill those Tomahawks with, party favors? Since I see no evidence of submunitions, I assume they would have a full high explosive payload, and a Tomahawk can carry 1000 pounds of the stuff. 1000 pounds of high explosives isn't going to leave a little five foot crater or a black smudge on pavement. A 1000 pound bomb--which has ~450 pounds of explosive filler--leaves a great big fucking crater you could practically swim laps in after a decent rainstorm.

You get bigger craters than were in that video from large mortars and arty rounds, which only have like 10-20 pounds of high explosive filler. Sixty Tomahawks should've made that base look like the surface of the moon, or like Pointe du Hoc anyway, except with bigger craters:

The obvious thing to say is maybe we're just not seeing the real damage. Or maybe the Tomahawks were all airbursts and we gave the air base a $100 million fireworks show.

We used $100 million in munitions to cause $100,000 in damage that will be repaired by next week. That's like smashing your Porshe to destroy someone's Huffy bicycle.

The news is reporting that 9 jets were destroyed, but all the photos I see are of empty hangars. Anyone see any photos of plane wreckage at the airfield yet? I'd enjoy seeing them. At least give me some solace that my taxmoney did something useful besides put holes into some empty hangars.

Donald trump jr. has retweeted three separate tweets in regards to Israeli support for the air strikes. Is Israeli support that important to him and if so why?

RE: The Syria conflict thread [re-titled]
Guys, once the dust is settling down, I think we may ask if this was nothing, but a three sided circus orchestarted by Trump, Xi Jinping and Putin.
Take a pencil and a sheet of paper and write down the immediate consequences of this:
The Russian puppet narrative will be over for some months, now that Trump ‘has shown Putin he’s not into games’.
The traditional bipartisan consensus around the president will be held for some months.
NATO leaders will rush before president Trump, including Germany.
Anybody knows what Chinese president Xi Jinping and President Trump are negotiating right now? Neither do I, who cares, anyway? All the lights are on Syria.
Russia has already beefed up the control over Syria’s airspace and will issue an ultimatum against anybody trying his luck in another attack. You heard that, Bibi?
Trump has already met his commitment with Netanyahu, so Bibi can’t complain about it. ‘Look, pal, I just scared Assad shitless… Oh, well, kinda!’

With God's help, I'll conquer this terrible affliction.

By way of deception, thou shalt game women.

I wanna hear something about Mattis. All day yesterday I wondered if Mattis, being prudent and levelheaded, was trying to talk Trump out of anything rash. Mattis will do as he's told, but I wonder if he was aboard with all of this or if he argued against it until the order was given.

Good article.

Quote:First of all, the use of gas should not be regarded as particularly “evil” in a war that has also seen bombing and shelling of civilian areas as a matter of course, not to mention all the refinements to cruelty that ISIS and their like have introduced. But it is. We get it. Gas is “evil,” and you’re very, very bad if you use it. OK? So, stop!

But this means that gas attacks are also an extremely useful means of propaganda — but only if your opponents are seen to do them. In fact, this negative propaganda effect totally outweighs gas’s military benefits. And, yes, using gas may have military benefits, although in this case it’s hard to see how any possible benefits could outweigh the costs in terms of increasing the level of Western hostility.

Quote:Sorry, but it seems ridiculous to try to launch a gas attack that kills a few dozen people in a civil war that has already killed between 321,000-400,000 people when it will be condemned by virtually everyone and has been used in the past as a pretext for US involvement. How could such a small-scale attack yield a strategic advantage? How can attacking a hospital and killing children have any military benefit at all?

RE: The Syria conflict thread [re-titled]
People stil discussing whether the gas attack was a fake or not? Here is some hints you should stop even thinking about "was it?" and more along the lines of "how was it faked?"

Who: Those same guys who murder anyone who won't go along with their lovely little Jihad.

Where: Area is in the hands of terrorists and their families and supporters. They bussed them out there from Aleppo when the place was already under siege by Nusra/ISIS/other alphabet terrorists.

Bus drivers were murdered for their troubles.

Now, who benefits? Not Trump.

Deep state, CIA, Gulf States, the war machine of NATO countris and US industrial complex. Tomahawk missiles aren't cheap, neither is the use of AWACs and surveilance.

All those lovely armaments being sold to the Saudis and their allies. You are incredibly stupid to think those same weapons are not being used for nefarious purposes.

We even have a Syrian guy in here claiming its good that the SAA got hit. 23 years of your beloved Syria and you're not fighting to save it? Then you claim to be a know it all and claim the big Dick of the USA is good for Syria?

I laughed at the barrel bomb thing. Because missiles are not as bad? Fucking please. if you were following this war like you claim to be you'd know its utter horse shit and you're getting played or spreading dis-information.

Are you a Sunni troll or just ignorant? I'm not sure yet because quite frankly you have had more than 5 years worth of hard evidence and even more in the past 3 years to come to a conclusion.

Conclusion: This benefits the wrong people.

This benefits perpetual divide and conquer. This benefits terrorists and Islamic Jihad. This benefits war profiteers and the war hawks in the US.

When you fail to see this given todays information spree and availability I have to call into question your ability as a person for rational thought.

I can understand Ivanka's position better than some guys opinions on here.

Yes Assad is a bad guy, but you name me one government in power in the world which isn't dirty. You name me one Western power government that doesn't want to kill for money and power.

The difference with Trump and his predecessors is that the others were known to be all for blowing up sand countries and letting shit hit the fan. Trump? The man comes from organisation and ran a campaign being the antithesis of this.

He will be a good President alright, for who we have yet to determine.

If you believe propaganda of Islamic terrorists because there is a bad guy on the other side of the fence you need to look up history and learn from it.

And as for the claim those missiles did nothing. The SAA don't have battlegroups or hundreds of planes. Taking out a few planes and destroying an airfield jeapardises their fragile ability to fight back.

But yes ofcourse, the use of chemical weapons is being done by an army with no means to deploy such measures! Laugh

I'm not an expert on these things by any means, but is it typical for a Tomahawk missile to completely destroy an aircraft in that matter while seemingly causing no damage to the ground and hangar around them?

These pictures seem very off to me for some reason.

Well, he is Russian, so maybe he just doesn't care.
Although, it doesn't look like a good facility for storing chemical weapons.
Even if the Syrians did have chemical weapons. The minimal damage won't prevent future air raids.

A delayed fuse I would guess. The missile penetrates the bunker wall before it explodes inside.

EDIT: I see what you mean, though. The last photo, there's no soot on the insides of the bunker. An aircraft exploded and burned and no black soot? I guess that seems a bit odd.

RE: The Syria conflict thread [re-titled]
With a cruise missile you wouldn't need to punch through the concrete, you'd just fly it right past or into the opening and detonate it then.

I don't think the first plane looks like a huge missile went off near it. It looks like it burned in place. It's conceivable that a Tomahawk destroyed it, but it also might have been a maintenance accident. Who knows?

The selfie picture is a bit puzzling because I can't tell WTF that was. It had aluminum in it, okay. Airplanes have aluminum. I suppose the pocking on the concrete wall could be from an explosion. Or maybe the concrete is old as shit and was never that great to begin with, being a third world structure.

I'm just not seeing much in the way of damage that's consistent with huge explosions. I once responded to a pretty big car bomb in Iraq and a whole street was just destroyed for 150 yards, it looked like a vision of hell on earth. These pictures from Syria look like something you could accomplish with some incendiary grenades and a small commando team. Way too clean, nothing like what I'd expect from an area that supposedly just felt 60,000 pounds worth of high explosives.

Medvedev: US Syria strikes 'one step away' from clashing with Russia

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev complained on Friday that U.S. cruise missile strikes on a Syrian airbase were one step away from clashing with the Russian military.
U.S. officials informed Russian forces ahead of the strikes -- intended to punish the Syrian government for what they say was a chemical weapons attack earlier this week -- and avoided hitting Russian personnel.
Satellite imagery suggests the Shayrat air base that was struck is home to Russian special forces and military helicopters, part of the Kremlin's effort to help the Syrian government fight Islamic State and other militant groups.
Medvedev, writing on social media, said the U.S. strikes were illegal and had been "one step away from military clashes with Russia."
