Undefeated High School Wrestler Sacrifices Perfect Record to Kid with Down Syndrome
http://time.com/4196755/undefeated-wrest...-syndrome/

Quote:Senior wrestler Deven Schuko stepped out onto the mat against Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School’s Andy Howland with a 27-0 record, and even though he walked away with the first loss of his career, there was no sense of defeat.

The Norton High School team captain was not only the number one ranked Division 3 wrestler in his weight class, but was also undefeated in his wrestling career when he offered a match to Howland, who has down syndrome. Schuko then proceeded to allow Howland to take him down.

“We shook hands and we locked up and he was a tough kid and he bulldogged me over to my back. I couldn’t stop the power,” Schuko told CBS Boston. “I’ve been in sports all my life and wrestling I believe is most demanding and for someone like Andy to wrestle and stick with it, I wanted to make his day.”

Footage of the match was posted on Facebook by Anthony Pucino on Jan. 24 and has since been viewed over 73,000 times and shared nearly 1,000 times.

A few thougthts:

1. Have these feel good stories increased by a factor of 30 in the past couple years? There is no better time in history to have Down Syndrome than 2016. I'm interested to see what happens when a mentally challenged kid "has a dream" of winning the World Series of Poker.

2. Having a four-year, undefeated high school wrestling career is an INCREDBILE accomplishment. Do you think Peyton Manning would give up his Super Bowl ring just because a sick or mentally challenged child "had a dream" of winning the big one? If Jesus Christ himself was ever asked about his 112-1 record in high school, I'd find it hard to believe he'd never say "I was actually undefeated, but this one time I let some retarded kid beat me to be nice." That sort of defeats the purpose of this whole act of kindness. It has an attention-whoring, this-story-is-gonna-get-me-so-laid-in-college type of fakeness to it (Note: it will get him laid in college). Kissy

3. Is this REALLY sending the right message to not only kids with disabilities, but to kids without disabilities who just suck at everything and have no work ethic? Anyone ever see the movie "Rudy," where an undersized kid busts his ass for years and is ridiculed by everyone he knows, just to get the ultimate reward of playing two meaningless plays at the end of a Notre Dame football game? Don't expect to see too many of these stories ever again on ESPN's 30 for 30.

Maybe I'm just a terrible person.

I think this is patronizing as fuck. If I was disabled and someone treated me like a child because of it I would be livid. I know this story has nothing to do with politics but this kind of thing reminds me of the way white liberals think of and treat minorities.

The only retard here is Deven Schuko. Insulting to the poor kid with down syndrome who probably had to put in extra work to get where he was.

Undersized vs. down syndrome are 2 different things dude.

It creates a false sense of achievement that, if you're a retard, might be fine.

My problem is when it spills over to regular kids who put in no effort and still get a trophy. Then, it creates a lifelong sense of entitlement.

It's a smart move.

Stuff like that follows you throughout life, to your advantage.

Yes it's patronizing and some feel-good nonsense, but occasionally those things are needed to get ahead in life.

Even the hardest men in power know when to soften up a bit and let someone else have the upper hand. Be unpredictable.

Watch the video. After the match, Andy raises his hands and scrunches his shoulders, more or less asking the crowd and his coaches "What the fuck was that shit?" Laugh

Its a fucking brilliant move. Who gives a shit about a high school record? Any future employer who googles his name is going to see this. And seeing how women run HR departments and that women base decisions off emotions... it will definitely play to his advantage. If he seeks a future in college wrestling they're going to care about his skill, not whether or not he threw a game for a mentally challenged kid.

I have a soft spot for the families of kids born with these types of issues. A few centuries ago they would of been left out to die as babies or thrown from a cliff.

They are children. An adult with Down's Syndrome has the mental capacity of a 8-9 year old.

Interesting ... if you had a baby and the doctor let you know he/she has severe Down's Syndrome would you end its life or raise it?

The moral thing to do would be to end its life.

Even though I won't talk shit about a guy doing something nice for a retard, I'm definitely not big on these 'feel good stories' because I get the vibe that for a lot of people this is just a modern, liberal equivalent of Phariseeism.

"Let's do something nice for someone poor or needy in order to convince ourselves or others that we're a good person".

I never trust people who try "too hard" to publicly convince people that they're nice, generous, charitable, etc - it makes it look more like they actually have something to hide, kind of like Ted Haggart extolling the virtues of Christian marriage.

What is funny is that many of the same far-left, SJWs extolling this story as an act of generosity would say that the mother should have killed it in the womb for having Down's Syndrome, and that it wasn't even a "person" if the mom decides so 1 millisecond before birth.

More interesting question, let's say your wife has had trouble concieving, youve been trying for 15 years and she is now 39 years old and against all odds, you get her pregnant. But the baby has downs. Now what do you do? It has a chance at best to be bagging groceries, probably will be living with you for the rest of it's life. But you wanted to raise a child for the past 15 years, now you get the chance. Your wife is 2 and a half months pregnant, you can still abort.

No reason why that would be the moral thing to do; sounds eugenical to me.

Plus hypothetically if we eliminated all disabilities via abortion or eugenics, then why stop there? Why not start eliminating anyone who's below-average in height, or of under-genius IQ, etc.

Me I'm fine with abortion during he earlier stages because the human brain and consciousness is not present immediately after conception, but once it's a clearly conscious being I'd only support abortion to save the mother's life, or possibly in the case of terminal fetal deformities, but that wouldn't include survivable disabilities.

In our modern society, I believe the parents have the right to choose. If they can support this kid his entire life, then so be it. Children with DS are usually outlived by their parents. I would not judge a couple on either decision. Personally, I think it is most humane to abort. Such births are unnatural and in primal times, would not survive.

I don't think he threw his perfect record away. This kind of feel-good story is what's worth millions in screenplays in modern times.

I support the sentiment of what the wrestler did but after watching the video, man at least make the retard work for it! He's not in a wheelchair with osteoporosis. The opponent rolled over like my dog asking for a belly rub. That probably explains why the downs kid was like " I don't know what happened?"

Good gesture, poor execution.

Also, being concerned about his high school record? Who the fuck cares about your high school wresting record unless you are planning to be a college or olympic wrestler..

and if he his going to be a college wrestler, this gesture has got him a shit load of press for scouting.

looking for a new signature.

As such, it doubly-functions as a handbook to warn decent people whom they should be suspicious of the motivations of, and of those whom are a long-term threat to their family or community.

This pisses me off on multiple levels. As others have said, very patronizing. He did it either to get pats on the back or because of blue pill pressure from adults.

Why would they even put a retarded kid up against the best wrestler in the state?

This never would have happened in the 70s or 80s.

It's just all around fake. A spectacle and showey.

He could have beaten the retarded kid and gone up to him after and said "hey kid, you were really tough. Keep at it!" This would have been more private and the retarded kid would still feel good about himself.

Of course they never should have put a downs kids up against a state champ.

This whole thing is very feminine. It's masculine to do what it takes to win and be a champ. It's feminine to roll over and lose on purpose - but bitches will viral it on Facebook and give it many likes.

Take care of those titties for me.

Ridiculously misplaced "altruism" here. Just proves to what extent men have been conditioned to surrender their identity and achievements for nonsense.

"Allowing" a disabled person to "defeat" a great athlete is a grotesque and maudlin attempt to show compassion.

If this wrestler was truly interested in helping this person, all he had to do was donate to his charity, or perform some other service for him.

What you do NOT do is prostitute yourself and throw away your gifts out of some warped notions of idealism.

Wow. What a shame.

And how condescending! If I was the disabled guy, I would be full of contempt for such behavior.
