I can understand your description of LaVey as a lower level 'clown.' He would be a public face to that practice and could be laughed at or ignored. But he was still programming and harming people though more for visible theater (from what we know).

I grew up Christian and still enjoy many of its beliefs. But I expereiced and learned other things as life went. I do not believe money is evil or that people are born bad, maybe a percent are.

The practices I was refering to were more philosophical. I do not believe everything that is not chrisitan is hedonism. I also do not believe consciousness is only in the realm of religion. I recently read a book of the breakdown of the bicameral mind and its thesis was that consciousness came after speech and literacy. Well, literacy is down and people hardly know how to learn, so it might be said that consciousness is on the way out. There are ways to heighten it I believe.

Jesus Christ was not 'Christian.' He was a free being, with a working heart and a knowing of right-action. He did not exhibit internal conflict. He had the ability to turn his knowledge into understanding then functional action. Through the simple practice of 'be still and know', he could commune directly with the Divine Presence within each of us. He had a direct knowing and experience of his divinity, which no one could give to him nor take away. This experiential knowing is all of our birth-rights. We do not need an intermediary to approve of our unique way to connect to our highest Self. This is why any control system, including organized religion, is fundamentally opposed to our individual right and responsibility to become free of bondage, whether imposed by our mind or others.

The Golden Rule is 'Do unto others as you would have done unto you' is a simple and clear reflection of Divine Law. Everyone is your brother and sister, so treat them as you'd wish to be treated. However, do not condone evil and cast it out (whether by word or deed) when and where you see it.

If two people we set down on an island with their minds wiped clean, and no books to guide them, how would they behave in ways that benefit each other without causing harm to the other? It would be through applying the Golden Rule. As individuals, or families, or communities, or nations we raise our consciousness and vibration the closer we align to the Golden Rule. We need to be in touch with both our capacity for compassion as well as just action. This is the integration of the feminine aspect AND the masculine aspects of our nature. One without the other is incomplete and dangerous, as someone who is more adept in the opposite aspect can and will manipulate you.

The true Christ-ian will study the life of Christ and absorb the principles he lived by. Truth cannot be complete without Love, and Love is impotent without Truth. They are really not two things, but the way our limited language and understanding expresses our perception of 'two sides of the same coin.' I would rather call it 'Love-Truth' or some other word that evokes an understanding of wholeness.

When Christ was able to perform miracles, those were powers that came through deeper and clearer connection to his Divine Nature. He used those powers for good, to offer healing and to inspire others. 'What I can do, you can do also.' Our capacity is nearly limitless, and we can choose to use it for good (meaning, without harm to others) or evil (meaning, allowing or causing others to be harmed). So yes, higher powers are certainly available and possible. To what ENDS they are APPLIED, is what matters. Just as neither technology nor material resources aren't inherently good or evil, but how it is used makes it so.

The soundtrack is an economical and effective meeting between Arvo Part and Gyorgy Ligeti that adjusts to the needs of the movie perfectly, never completely existing apart from it while constituting a crucial element. The minimalism of this film would find itself seriously crippled if any one element in photography, music, plot development be removed.

The Witch can be mistaken for a simple collection of folk tale trivia on its own, especially without some background knowledge of the black arts themselves, esoterism, philosophical incursions into ancient and primitive cultures, or at least psychological insights. If the film is taken as a holistic product of cinema even without these, we find a minimalist artwork of outstanding quality.

The movie both reveals and hides a magus’ mark. It plays completely within the cliches of inverted deception of so-called Satanism while allowing a perceptive and interested viewer to glimpse at what lies behind the frontispiece. From a certain point of view, this simultaneous showing and hiding is important for its final effect. Like a sniper, it cannot fulminate its target without at least briefly revealing itself.
