Since the link was established, psychologists have, under political pressure, started to classify pedophilia as a distinct orientation. They claim that pedophiles are neither heterosexual nor homosexual, but attracted primarily to children and have simply been living false lives due to their mental illness. They have not yet explained why faggots molest underage boys more frequently than underage girls.
You can see the definition-twisting in the following study:

And on the political side:

RE: Supreme Court legalizes gay marriage in the United States
I took the time to paste this directly into a readable format because I want everyone to read it. There is absolutely no question that homosexuals are extremely overrepresented among pedophiles. Volando, if you consider yourself a man of science and logic, I encourage you to look at the facts below. The article is fully sourced. The reality is that homosexuals are, first and foremost, sexual perverts. Homosexuality is a perversion. We also know for a fact that homosexuals participate disproportionately in other perversions like BDSM and group sex. It's not really surprising, then, to learn that they also engage disproportionately in the perversion of pedophilia.

The Scientific Evidence

Three kinds of scientific evidence point to the proportion of homosexual molestation: 1) survey reports of molestation in the general population, 2) surveys of those caught and convicted of molestation, and 3) what homosexuals themselves have reported. These three lines of evidence suggest that the 1%-to-3% of adults who practice homosexuality3 account for between a fifth and a third of all child molestation.

Reports of Molestation by the General Population

In 1983, a probability survey of the sexual experiences of 4,340 adults in five U.S. cities found that about 3% of men and 7% of women reported sexual involvement with a man before the age of 13 (i.e., 30% was homosexual).4

In 1983-84, a random survey of 3,132 adults in Los Angeles found that 3.8% of men and 6.8% of women said that they had been sexually assaulted in childhood. Since 93% of the assailants were male, and only 1% of girls had been assaulted by females, about 35% of the assaults were homosexual.5

The Los Angeles Times surveyed 2,628 adults across the U.S. in 1985.6 27% of the women and 16% of the men claimed to have been sexually molested. Since 7% of the molestations of girls and 93% of the molestations of boys were by adults of the same sex, about 4 of every 10 molestations in this survey were homosexual.

In a random survey of British 15-to-19 yr olds, 35% of the boys and 9% of the girls claimed to have been approached for sex by adult homosexuals and 2% of the boys and 1% of the girls admitted to succumbing.7

In science, a review of the professional literature published in a refereed scientific journal is considered to be an accurate summary of the current state of knowledge. One of the most comprehensive such reviews was published in 1985.8 It concluded that homosexual acts were involved in 25% to 40% of the cases of child molestation recorded in the scientific and forensic literature.

Surveys of Those Convicted

Drs. Freund and Heasman of the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry in Toronto reviewed two sizeable studies and calculated that 34% and 32% of the offenders against children were homosexual. In cases they had personally handled, homosexuals accounted for 36% of their 457 pedophiles.9

Dr. Adrian Copeland, a psychiatrist who works with sexual offenders at the Peters Institute in Philadelphia, said that, from his experience, pedophiles tend to be homosexual and “40% to 45%” of child molesters have had “significant homosexual experiences.”10

Dr. C.H. McGaghy estimated that “homosexual offenders probably constitute about half of molesters who work with children.”11 Other studies are similar:

  • Of the approximately 100 child molesters in 1991 at the Massachusetts Treatment Center for Sexually Dangerous Persons, a third were heterosexual, a third bisexual, and a third homosexual in orientation.12
  • A state-wide survey of 161 Vermont adolescents who committed sex offenses in 1984 found that 35 (22%) were homosexual.13
  • Of the 91 molesters of non-related children at Canada’s Kingston Sexual Behaviour Clinic from 1978 to 1984, 38 (42%) engaged in homosexuality.14
  • Of 52 child molesters in Ottawa from 1983 to 1985, 31 (60%) were homosexual.15
  • In England for 1973, 802 persons (8 females) were convicted of indecent assault on a male, and 3,006 (6 of them female) were convicted of indecent assault on a female (i.e., 21% were homosexual). 88% of male and about 70% of female victims were under age sixteen.16

Because of this pattern, Judge J.T. Rees concluded that

“the male homosexual naturally seeks the company of the male adolescent, or of the young male adult, in preference to that of the fully-grown man. [In 1947] 986 persons were convicted of homosexual and unnatural offences. Of those, 257 were indictable offences involving 402 male victims…. The great majority of [whom]… were under the age of 16. Only 11%… were over 21.”

“[T]he problem of male homosexuality is in essence the problem of the corruption of youth by itself [i.e., by other boys] and by its elders. [And thereby]… the creation… of new addicts ready to corrupt a still further generation of young men and boys in the future.”17

What Homosexuals Admit

The 1948 Kinsey survey found that 37% of the gays and 2% of the lesbians admitted to sexual relations with under-17-yr-olds, and 28% of the gays and 1% of the lesbians admitted to sexual relations with under-16-yr-olds while they themselves were aged 18 or older.18

In 1970 the Kinsey Institute interviewed 565 white gays in San Francisco: 25% of them admitted to having had sex with boys aged 16 or younger while they themselves were at least 21.19

In The Gay Report, 23% of the gays and 6% of the lesbians admitted to sexual interaction with youth less than 16 years of age.20

In France, 129 convicted gays (average age 34 years) said they had had sexual contact with a total of 11,007 boys (an average of 85 different boys per man).21 Abel, et al reported similarly that men who molested girls outside their family had averaged 20 victims each; those who molested boys averaged 150 victims each.22

Summary

About a third of the reports of molestation by the populace have involved homosexuality. Likewise, between a fifth and a third of those who have been caught and/or convicted practiced homosexuality. Finally, a fifth to a third of surveyed gays admitted to child molestation. All-in-all, a rather consistent story.

Teacher-Pupil Sexual Interaction

Nowadays parents are labeled bigots for fearing that homosexual teachers might molest their children. But if homosexuals are more apt to molest children and are in a positon to take advantage of them, this fear makes sense. Indeed, accounts of disproportionate homosexual teacher molestation appear throughout the scientific literature.

The original U.S. Kinsey study reported that 4% of the non-criminal white gays and 7% of the non-criminal white lesbians reported that they had their first homosexual experience with a ‘teacher or other caretaker.’ None of the heterosexuals were recorded as having a teacher as their first sex partner.18

In England, Schofield reported that at least 2 of his 150 homosexuals had their first homosexual experience with a teacher and an additional 2 reported that their first homosexual contact with an adult was with a teacher. One of the 50 men in his comparison group had also been seduced by a homosexual teacher, while none of the men interviewed claimed involvement with a heterosexual teacher.24

In the 1978 McCall’s magazine study of 1,400 principals, 7% reported complaints about homosexual contact between teachers and pupils and 13% reported complaints about heterosexual contact between teachers and pupils (i.e., 35% of complaints were homosexual). Two percent “knew of instances in which teachers discussed their homosexuality in class.”25

Of 400 consecutive Australian cases of molestation, 7 boys and 4 girls were assaulted by male teachers. Thus 64% of those assaults were homosexual.26

In 1987, Dr. Stephen Rubin, associate professor of psychology at Whitman College, conducted a 10-state survey and found 199 sexual abuse cases involving teachers. 122 male teachers had abused female pupils and 14 female teachers had abused male students. In 59 cases, however, male teachers had abused male pupils and in 4 cases female teachers had abused female students (overall 32% were homosexual).27

A 1983 survey asked 4,340 adults to report on any sexual advances and any physical sexual contact by elementary and secondary teachers (4% of those who were teachers in the survey claimed to be bisexual or homosexual). 29% of the advances by elementary and 16% of the advances by secondary school teachers were homosexual. In addition, 1 of 4 (25%) reports of actual sexual contact with an elementary school teacher were homosexual. In high school, 8 (22%) of 37 contacts between teacher and pupil were homosexual. 18% reported having had a homosexual teacher (8% of those over the age of 55 vs. 25% of those under 26). Of those reporting a homosexual teacher, 6% said that the teacher influenced them to try homosexuality and 13% of the men and 4% of the women said that the teacher made sexual advances toward them.4

Summary

Whether examining surveys of the general populace or counts of those caught, homosexual teachers are disproportionately apt to become sexually involved with children.

Proportionality Is The Key

Study after nationwide study has yielded estimates of male homosexuality that range between 1% and 3%.3 The proportion of lesbians in these studies is almost always lower, usually about half that of gays. So, overall, perhaps 2% of adults regularly indulge in homosexuality. Yet they account for between 20% to 40% of all molestations of children.

Child molestation is not to be taken lightly. Officials at a facility which serves about 1,500 runaway youngsters each year estimate that about half of the boys have been homosexually abused and 90% of the girls heterosexually assaulted.30 Investigation of those suffering severe chronic mental illness implicates child molestation as a primary cause; 45% of Bigras et al’s patients were homosexually abused).31

If 2% of the population is responsible for 20% to 40% of something as socially and personally troubling as child molestation, something must be desperately wrong with that 2%. Not every homosexual is a child molester. But enough gays do molest children so that the risk of a homosexual molesting a child is 10 to 20 times greater than that of a heterosexual.

Goals of the Gay Movement

The gay movement is forthright about seeking to legitimize child-adult homosexual sex. In 1987, The Journal of Homosexuality — the scholarly organ of the gay rights movement — published “Pedophilia and the Gay Movement.”32 Author Theo Sandfort detailed homosexual efforts to end “oppression towards pedophilia.” In 1980, the largest Dutch gay organization (the COC)

“adopted the position that the liberation of pedophilia must be viewed as a gay issue… [and that] ages of consent should therefore be abolished… by acknowledging the affinity between homosexuality and pedophilia, the COC has quite possibly made it easier for homosexual adults to become more sensitive to erotic desires of younger members of their sex, thereby broadening gay identity.”

In 1990, COC achieved a significant victory: lowering of the age of consent for homosexual sex in Holland to 12 (unless the parents object, in which case it goes up to 15).33

In the U.S. and Canada, the North American Man-Boy Love Association marches proudly in many gay pride parades with the stated goal of removing the barriers to man-boy sex. Note the phrases “oppression towards pedophilia” and “liberation of pedophilia.” It is clear that those who advocate the legalization of sex between adults and children intend to argue that such conduct is a “civil right,” deserving of the same legal protections afforded to other minorities. A large proportion of Americans regard that argument as a mere pretext to giving “sexual predators” free reign to take advantage of vulnerable children.

Conclusion

Not only is the gay rights movement upfront in its desire to legitimize sex with children, but whether indexed by population reports of molestation, pedophile convictions, or teacher-pupil assaults, there is a strong, disproportionate association between child molestation and homosexuality. Ann Landers’ claim that homosexuals molest children at no higher a rate than heterosexuals do is untrue. The assertion by gay leaders and the American Psychological Association that a homosexual is less likely than a heterosexual to molest children is patently false.

The people that harp on about wanting man-boy love to be legitimate can squark all they want. Any man who touches my child would be in danger of visiting his ancestors. And I am quite sure the vast majority of fathers think the same way.

RE: Supreme Court legalizes gay marriage in the United States
Kind of disheartening to see so many guys here barely being able to look past their own noses. If it were just about letting gay dudes fuck each other and do what they want in private without persecution this wouldn't be a problem, but the movement goes way beyond that. Remember, the left never stops at tolerance.

The first problem of course is the fanaticism of the people supporting this, at least actively. Remember that these people want to completely erase history and replace all norms of civilization with nothing but their own degeneracy and their own aggrandizement, and they can very successfully persecute you for dissenting. That's why this is so dangerous - they are being emboldened. It's gotten to the point where these people are now sometimes moving in days to try and make their next gains - and if you dissent you must be destroyed.

The second problem is that this is a stepping stone to other, more socially destructive forms of behavior under the guise of "love." They'll ride the transgender wave next, which is now cresting, in order for us to accept a clear delusion, and some of you might even disagree on the same grounds. Again, if it was simply letting them do what they wanted in private without fear of persecution, it wouldn't be as problematic, but we know that's never where the left stops. They will move on to polygamy after transgenderism, which as I have already noted, is incredibly destructive for a stable society - and its prohibition was one of the bedrocks on which Western civilization was built.

Slippery slope you say? No, because we know that's how these people work. It's been demonstrated on far too many occasions to count, and when the dissenting supreme court justices themselves make mention of this, you know you have to take it seriously. This was the first major, legal step toward the complete, blanket deregulation of personal relationships in the eyes of the law, and there will be consequences.

This is not about LGBT people themselves. Don't fall for that red herring. This is about power and the vision of degenerate ideologues to deconstruct Western civilization for their own gain, and replace it with nothing except their own failings as people.

RE: Supreme Court legalizes gay marriage in the United States
One of the things that is a confounding factor in getting good data is that the sources that should normally be relied upon to make informed decisions are actually some of the most partisan forces in favor of homosexuality (and other deviant behaviors).

I don't want to get too much into my personal life but I've known multiple people who were active and well respected members of the American Psychological Association : Fact of the matter is, the organization is solidly leftist, to the point where Psychologists themselves acknowledge this bias and make noises lamenting the fact, but overwhelmingly are ok with the overtly hostile nature of the APA to anything resembling a conservative or non-leftist position.

Similarly, sociologists are well known to essentially be partisan hacks. Greg Cochcran calls sociology inverse weathervanes.

Recently it came out that Michael LaCour was uncovered as a huge fraud in his research into gay marriage. Knowing how partisan and corrupt the major academic interests into this field are, though, it's hard to believe almost any of their data or proclamations. I'm equally skeptical of religiously motivated data, but it wouldn't surprise me if virtually all research on homosexuality, homosexual marriage, etc in the past 30 years were fraudulent.

Like the Roman Empire, Ancient Greece, Babylon, the Incas, the Aztecs, the Persians, various Chinese dynasties, the United States will indeed collapse.

This is really an interesting topic to think about, I have serious doubts that we will see a collapse in the way ancient societies collapsed. To truly have a collapse like the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, where humanity does not recover for centuries or even a thousand years... I just cannot imagine that happening. A literal Mad Max scenario, equally seems unlikely.

I don't see how there could possibly be such a power vacuum in the U.S. with so many weapons around. Human power is basically all based around violence, and whoever has the biggest guns wins. Thus even if, formally, The United States of America ceased existing, whatever the successor state might be would at least have a huge military at its disposal with which to maintain order.

Look for instance to the collapse of the Soviet Union. The world's largest "country" dissolved and broke up into dozens of states. They had a couple decades of chaos, lots of corruption, but the breakup of the Soviet Union is nothing on the scale of classical civilizational collapses. People may complain about poorer quality public services but that's relatively small beans compared to actually thinking Mad Max is a possible outcome for us.

You could look to Iraq or Syria as a worse case scenario I guess, even then, not Mad Max, though you're getting much closer.

If you're really expecting the worst, I guess Haiti or Somalia could be your worst case scenario, but I don't see how we get there anytime soon.

Our financial power and the dollar's status as the world's currency is largely based around our military power. We can always print more money to pay our debts because whoever you are, you have to take our money because we have nuclear missiles covering the entire planet. China cannot just not accept our dollars as payment, and the fears of hyperinflation have been nonstop since 2008 yet have failed to materialize. There truly has never been a country/empire/world power on the scale of the United States.

That isn't to say that The United States of America is eternal or will last for 1,000 years. But I just don't see a realistic situation where the U.S. collapses and there is a huge power vacuum that goes unfilled to the point that we re-enter the stone age. Our standard of living may drop down to converge with the rest of the Americas, but even a standard of living on par with Mexico is not Mad Max. Yet for there to be true chaos you need a power vacuum that goes unfilled, to the point that a few assholes with some guns and cars could legitimately be the biggest source of power around. How could that possibly happen in a country that has such a massive military?

If you start talking about 100 + years in the future, no one can really predict much with any accuracy, so we're into the realm of science fiction...

--

But now I've started with the "I don't see this happening anytime soon" stuff which is basically a surefire way to ensure that something does in fact happen.

I've just read Rudyard Kipling's short poem God of the Copybook Headings which talks about this in incredibly pertinent detail:

OK just for kicks, I'll keep this up. Warning: rank speculation below.

I don't think the US is going to collapse. I think the US is going to turn into a heavy duty police state that will make the current legal situation look tame. I think very large numbers of white hetero men will be forced to wear tracking bracelets, or more likely, their faces and DNA traces will simply be tracked full-time, real-time, everywhere. I think white hetero men will be denied college entry and job opportunities, will be arrested or fired for making trivial comments, as a matter of routine. All this bullshit about "I'm going my own way" will be so completely meaningless when you can't make any money and are living in the modern equivalent of Hoovervilles. Yes you, Porche. You'll be living in a tent under a freeway onramp somewhere. You won't be able to "go your own way". You won't be able to go anywhere.

Anybody watch Minority Report? That's a good start.

White males will be routinely denied passports. That means you can't travel overseas. Mostly this will because, many of you will have felony convictions of some sort on your record. Once you are a felon, even if it's bullshit, you can't get a Passport. Other countries won't want you anyway.

In some states, however, there will be the opposite. Heavy right-wing religious groups will take over and will bluntly reject the federal government. It won't be a "soft" civil war. No outright warfare, not yet, but instead a concentration of militia and citizen power at the state borders. If you want to get into Texas, you'd better have good reason, and you'd better be able to convince them that you are Christian.

In Europe, Fascism and Islamic warfare. Euros swing much harder than the US so expect to see far-Right Franco-style governments pop up and gain complete dominance in multiple Euro nations.

The exception to all this...simple. If you are rich, none of the above applies. You live in a wholly seperate society, protected by walls of technology and corporate power. The corporatists will be sovereign power unto themselves.

It's going bankrupt this century, and then things will return to, "The strong do what they can, and the weak suffer what they must." Faggots won't last a year in these circumstances.

When the pendulum swings back, it won't be a "swing," it will be more like the clock exploding and the pendulum flies out of the machine and never swings again. America's entire system is running on faggotry, debt, coercion, mass media deception - pure lies.

What made America great came from the Kings of old - Patriarchy, Christianity, and Community Loyalty. The reason America has been able to keep up degeneracy for so long is because America had so much inertia from its upstanding old European traditions which were built on truths of human nature.

So all the degeneracy you see now is only sustained by the once great achievements of our old civilization, and once these things are gone so will our technology, our wealth, our peace and order, etc. Mad max will look downright utopian compared to what's coming to this barren continent.

A few comments on this. First, I don't think that we've been moving left forever. The American Revolution, for example, was a very conservative revolution. Very little actually changed (the average man still couldn't vote, the elites still held almost all power, etc.).

As for what is coming, I don't think it's going to be Mad Max style. I think it's going to be a lot closer (politically) to Medieval Europe. You're going to have at least ten (if not more) independent states, which will vary in governance from democratic to fiefdom. Mad Max is the direct result of nuclear war, which I really don't see happening any time soon, regardless of Iran's bluster. It's really a false dichotomy to claim that you have current civilization on one side and Mad Max on another. There's a very wide middle ground.

On another level, I think the pendulum is swinging back already. Think about how the political climate has been changing in the last 10 years. A lot of the country has become progressively more right wing.

If you're not fucking her, someone else is.

Video of homosexuals admitting on hidden camera their stories of being molested as children and subsequently becoming pedophiles as adults. Note how none of them admit anything wrong with the situation. Adopting a homosexual identity is very often a coping mechanism for dealing with the repressed psychological trauma of having been sexually abused as a child. In other words, instead of having to come to terms with the horror of what happened to him, the homosexual instead convinces himself that he enjoyed the experience, that it was a positive event and that his eventual homosexual identity was an inevitability regardless of his having been molested or not. These people are mentally ill. They should be pitied and offered corrective therapy, not celebrated for their brokenness and self-destructive behavior. And society most certainly should not be giving sanction to homosexuality, much less glowing approval and official recognition of homosexual behavior being equal with normal sexuality.

I think this would happen with or without gay marriage, but the way that the new totalitarians work is that they want you to not realize you're living in a totalitarian state. To this respect, you're given a reasonable amount of leeway until you stick your head out or piss off the wrong group of people. When that happens, they already know everything about your life, and can pin something on you (no one is a saint, and it's not anyone can call them on lies when they control all the media), and destroy your life. Then it's off to the proverbial gulags.

We're basically already there, all it is now is doubling down on this stuff, even more explicit anti-normalcy policies, and even more whittling away at the average person's wealth until they can't pursue anything beyond (a) sucking off the media's tit for mind-numbing circus entertainment and (b) scrambling to pay the bills at dead end jobs.

If you guys are right, and it turns out that homosexuality is even partly a rippling phenomenon of inter-generational perpetuated sexual abuse, then this is the heaviest shit I've yet to discover by this forum. I hope more research into this continues.

Perhaps some of the Russian-speaking members of the forum could check the internet for Russian sociology or psychology journals, to see if they have discovered anything else on the issue. I suspect the Russian researchers won't be suppressed by the cultural Left.

I personally don't believe that molestation causes homosexuality, but I do believe Cochran's theory that homosexuality is caused by a pathogen. The pattern of molested children later becoming homosexual fits into this since a carrier of the pathogen (homosexual) raping a child would seem like a likely means of transmission, but need not be the only way.

I also don't think it's an accident that most historical societies have associated homosexuality with pedophilia. Prejudices don't appear out of nowhere, and it strains credibility to believe that billions of people throughout history would observe homosexual behavior for tens of thousands of years and all come to the conclusion that homosexuality and pedophilia were linked without there being a degree of truth to it.

Why not? It's not exactly rocket science to understand why homosexual molestation turns many boys into homosexuals. The exact same process has been observed and documented with children who are physically abused (they are much more likely to abuse their own children) as well as children who are exposed to drugs (they are much more likely to become addicts).

Children are incredibly impressionable. If you expose them to psychological trauma at a young age, there are going to be consequences that manifest into adulthood. The pathogen theory of homosexuality is entirely unnecessary from a causal perspective. Psychological trauma is a much simpler and more documented explanation, and additionally acts to explain the greatly heightened prevalence of mental illness, drug use and suicide among homosexuals.

I strongly doubt any pathogen cause. If it was, evidence would have showed it crystal clear long ago, such as blood transfusions from gays causing people to become gay (an undiscovered pathogen wouldn't be screened).

It's also not genetic, and it's not a choice. Everything is strongly pointing towards early life developmental causes. I think uncovering the answer to this question is very important. If it turns out that homosexuality is a preventable development, and suitable developmental precautions discovered, the whole cause of the Left on this issue would be seriously undermined.

I agree there's linkage there, but I don't think it's causative. Not all homosexuals are molested in childhood, so at the very least there must be some other cause.

It's very easy to not find things you're not looking for. You would have to do a longitudinal study of young children exposed to blood transfusions by known homosexuals. This isn't something anyone has done, as far as I know. There's also a catch-22: if you believed your hypothesis it would be unethical to perform the experiment.

RE: Supreme Court legalizes gay marriage in the United States
One has to laugh at the outpouring of support from women who aren't interested in getting married "because it's my choice and my career means more to me right now" but are still bending over backwards to show support for gay men now being free to get married in parts of the country they would never want to set foot in to begin with.

Marriage is dead.

It's not about a religious union of a man and a woman under the law with the express purpose of combining efforts to raise successful children. It's now about status whoring followed by increasingly shit sex (if at all) with an increasingly fat wife followed by a visit to the divorce rape killing field.

More than anything this proves that democracy is dead and Scalia sets that out excellently.

RE: Supreme Court legalizes gay marriage in the United States
I wonder if anyone has done an analysis of the economic impact of this? For example, when one gay dies the other will have the right to his social security, insurance, annuities, etc. And they will be able to file taxes as married couples. They can bring other men over on K1 visas. Maybe we could even game this and marry each other for economic benefits or to get a job promotion. I mean, the system now is a joke anyway and there is no law against straight men getting married. Then when you want a real marriage with a woman you just file for a divorce, or move to a country like Russia which doesn't recognize gay marriage.

Rico... Sauve....

Shit's gonna get gayer and gayer at this point. All the corporations are going to jump in (if they haven't already) on this gay propaganda trend and milk it for all it's worth. Expect to see gay propaganda in full force in TV shows, films, and even videogames.

Next up: Trannies.

Remember on Idiocracy how the Fuddruckers sign morphed over time to Buttfuckers? You can count on that happening in real life at some point.

This does not hold water. You have had many baterials and viral infections in your life, and someone who got a blood transfusion from you would not contract them all. Not every pathogen is like HIV which lasts forever.

You can read Dr. Greg Cochran on this in the below links, I do not know if his theory is true, but dismissing it out of hand because of the reasoning you gave doesn't hold water.

Quote:I HAVE a motto," Gregory Cochran told me recently. "'Big old diseases are infectious.' If it's common, higher than one in a thousand, I get suspicious. And if it's old, if it has been around for a while, I get suspicious."

The fact that Ewald has dared to conceive of a big theory for the medical sciences owes much to Cochran's contributions. A forty-five-year-old Ph.D. physicist who lives in Albuquerque with his wife and three small children, Cochran makes a living doing contract work on advanced optical systems for weaponry and other devices. Whereas Ewald is an academic insider, with department meetings to attend and honors theses to monitor, Cochran is a solo player, with an encyclopedic mind (he is a former College Bowl contestant) and a manner that verges on edginess. These days he spends a lot of time at his computer, as rapt as a conspiracy theorist, cruising Medline for new data on infectious diseases and, one imagines, almost cackling to himself when he finds something really good. Cochran's background in a field dominated by grand theories and universal laws may serve as a valuable counterpoint to the empirical and theory-hostile universe of the health sciences.

Ewald and Cochran encountered each other serendipitously, after Cochran decided to pursue a certain line of thinking about a very sensitive subject. "I was reading an article in Scientific American in 1992 about pathogens manipulating a host to get what they want," Cochran recalls. "It described a flowering plant infected by a fungus, and the fungus hijacks the plant's reproductive machinery so that instead of pollen it produces fungal spores. I thought, Could it be?" Cochran strayed from his field to try his hand at writing an article on biology -- elaborating an audacious theory that human homosexuality might result from a "manipulation" of a host by a germ with its own agenda. He sent his draft to a prestigious biology journal, which sent it out to three scientists for peer review. Two were unconvinced, even appalled; the third was Paul Ewald, who thought the article was flawed but who was nonetheless impressed by the logic of the idea. The article was rejected, but Ewald and Cochran began their association.

To illustrate his thinking about infectiousness and disease, Cochran not long ago gave me a tour of his conceptual bins, into which he sorts afflictions according to their fitness impact. Remember that fitness can be defined as the evolutionary success of one organism relative to competing organisms. Only one thing counts: getting one's genes into the future. Any disease that kills host organisms before they can reproduce reduces fitness to zero. Obviously, fitness takes a major hit whenever the reproductive system itself is involved, as in the case of venereal chlamydia.

Consider a disease with a fitness cost of one percent -- that is, a disease that takes a toll on survival or reproduction such that people who have it end up with one percent fewer offspring, on average, than the general population. That small amount adds up. If you have an inherited disease with a one percent fitness cost, in the next generation there will be 99 percent of the original number in the gene pool. Eventually the number of people with the disease will dwindle to close to zero -- or, more precisely, to the rate produced by random genetic mutations: about one in 50,000 to one in 100,000.

We were considering the bin containing diseases that are profoundly antagonistic to fitness, with a fitness cost of somewhere between one and 10 percent by Cochran's calculations. My eye took in a catalogue of human ills -- some familiar, some exotic, some historically fearsome but close to extinct, some lethal in the tropics but of little concern to inhabitants of the temperate zones. This list also showed prevailing medical opinion about cause. Each name of a disease was trailed by a lower-case letter: i (for infectious), g(genetic), g+(genetic defense against an infectious disease), e (caused by an environmental agent), or u (unknown). I read, "Atherosclerosis (u), ... chlamydia (venereal) (i), cholera (i), diphtheria (i), endometriosis (u), filariasis (i), G6PD deficiency (g+), ... hemoglobin E disease (g+), hepatitis B (i), hepatitis C (i), hookworm disease (i), kuru (i), ... malaria (vivax) (i), ... pertussis (i), pneumococcal pneumonia (i), polycystic ovary disease (u), scarlet fever (i), ... tuberculosis (i), typhoid (i), yellow fever (i)."

Of the top forty fitness-antagonistic diseases on the list, thirty-three are known to be directly infectious and three are indirectly caused by infection; Cochran believes that the others will turn out to be infectious too. The most fitness-antagonistic diseases must be infectious, not genetic, Ewald and Cochran reason, because otherwise their frequency would have sunk to the level of random mutations. The exceptions would be either diseases that could be the effect of some new environmental factor (radiation or smoking, for example), or genetic diseases that balance their fitness cost with a benefit. Sickle-cell anemia is one example of the latter.

It's amazing that The Atlantic, as recently as the 90s, published Cochran and Steve Sailer, whom today they most likely would not deign to mention except posisble to condemn them.

I wonder just how many corporations and high profile individuals truly don't give a shit about gay marriage, but their PR and social media managers approached them and said, "Hey, we need to get on board with this."

I'm guessing a large majority.
