RE: Terrorists hold 13 hostages in Sydney chocolate Shop
Extremists exist in all periods from peaceful times to turbulent times. For these idiots to hold innocent people hostage in a cafe is ridiculous, it will only bring a negative image to their cause.

They (isis) are going about it in a way terrorizing people, cutting the heads off of children etc etc. Even if they have statehood, they will eventually collapse as the whole world sees their atrocities and behavior. For example, isis says it's ok to rape non Muslim women etc etc, while you have other Muslims saying that is not allowed. Who is one to believe. The Quran is both sides' point of reference.

I want to see Muslim clerics and religious figures in Australia go there and try to talk some sense into these individuals.

RE: Terrorists hold 13 hostages in Sydney chocolate Shop
There used to be a thing running on the interwebs about Midwestern Lutherans running amuck and rioting with death tolls the way the Moslems do when stories come out about things like flushing Korans down the toilet. Of course the joke is that Lutherans are not likely to riot, let along kill each other in the process. They are stable, productive, and generally civilized.
I would say that native Australians are likewise unlikely to take a bunch of hostages with bomb vests. Like so many other western countries, the elite in Australia though that a population of stable, hardworking people of European heritage was a bad idea, and they needed to import a large population from an utterly foreign culture with tendencies towards bomb vests, etc.

Hence, this story is an excellent opportunity to say "Hooray for Multiculturalism"

There are 13 people who are quite likely about to die in Australia's first ever terrorist attack and all you care about is nitpicking people's posts.

Please grow up.

Manager of the Chocolate shop is saying there are 50 people in the building not 13.

Apparently there are 20+ hostages.

Going to be interesting to see how this ends up.. They're about 400m from where my girlfriend works.

I will say one thing.
This isn't as random as it looks.

If you look the Lidt up on google maps.
Right across the street is the News 7 headquarters.
The block over is the US consulate building

^Channel 7 is the most watched TV channel in Australia, and Martin Place is an extremely busy street mall in the heart of Sydney's city centre with numerous bank headquarters nearby.

I'd bet the gunman is homegrown Lebanese. Half of them are Catholic but they're still the largest Muslim group especially in Sydney. Australian's are very supportive of multiculturalism on the whole (less than 1/3 of native born Australians think we should admit fewer new immigrants, scroll down to the 6th question) but Muslims get no love and this is only going to make things worse for them.

The ABC stream would probably put you to sleep: https://au.news.yahoo.com/video/watch/17...ve-sydney/

The first people in Oz to say "Hooray for multicuturalism" were probably the aborigines.

Hope these Aussies get released/rescued unscathed.

RE: Terrorists hold 13 hostages in Sydney chocolate Shop
OP is simply suggesting here that some Muslim gunmen holding hostages in Australia is a result of multiculturalism. If the terrorists turn out to have been born and raised in Australia, his suspicion will be proved right. If the terrorists turn out to have come to Australia illegaly and then somehow have been granted citizenship or residence permit, his suspicions will be proved right. If there is any way this could have been prevented by more strict border regulations, his suspicions will be proved right. The only way for him to be wrong is that the terrorists sneaked into Australia to do this, kind of like 9/11, in which case it will be just foreign policies that should be blamed. Are we seriously sitting here discussing whether or not multiculturalism is good for Western countries and their safety?

If he's as old as people say he is, it's unlikely he grew up here. Lebanese Muslims didn't begin arriving till the 1980's. It's pretty difficult to immigrate to Australia. It's also pretty difficult to get your hands on a gun even illegally, I wonder how he pulled that off. He would've had to have links to organized crime, thinking specifically of outlaw motorcycle gangs.

Quote:Six years later, in October 1985, Alpha Group was dispatched to war-torn Beirut, Lebanon. The Kremlin was informed of the kidnapping of four Soviet diplomats by the militant group, the Islamic Liberation Organization (a radical offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood). It was believed that this was retaliation for the Soviet support of Syrian involvement in the Lebanese Civil War.[16] However, by the time Alpha arrived, one of the hostages had already been killed. Through a network of supporting KGB operatives, members of the task-force identified each of the perpetrators involved in the crisis, and once identified, began to take the relatives of these militants as hostages. Following the standard Soviet policy of no negotiations with terrorists, some of the hostages taken by Alpha Group were dismembered, and their body parts sent to the militants. The warning was clear: more would follow unless the remaining hostages were released immediately. The show of force worked, and for a period of 20 years no Soviet or Russian officials were taken captive, until the 2006 abduction and murder of four Russian embassy staff in Iraq.

Sure Soviet officials weren't taken hostage/captured but meanwhile in 2004:
Quote:The Beslan school hostage crisis (also referred to as the Beslan school siege or Beslan massacre) started the first of September 2004, lasted three days and involved the capture of over 1,100 people as hostages (including 777 children), ending with the death of 385 people

This would probably be the fourth terrorist attack.

There was the Turkish Consul assassination in 1980 by the Armenians, who also exploded a car bomb in Melbourne in about 1986 or so. Both were Armenian Genocide related.

The first was the bombing of the Sydney Hilton in 1978, which the government are still arguing who actually did it, originally laying blame on some Indian spiritualist group. It's often cited as a false flag attack, since it lead to the creation of the Australian Federal Police, and lead to increased powers for ASIO. Sound familiar?

Diversity is our strength. Has the Prime Minister trotted out the 'religion of peace' line yet?

They got softer since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Also, more human rights activists watching them both from Russia and abroad. This trend is not unique to Russia, though. Everybody got softer except for the terrorists.

Bro, I labeled you a troll based on your comment history.

Giving advice on 2000 trips, when airfare to nepal is pretty much that. The trek is 3000-6000 itself.

Then you wrote "hooray for multiculturalism" at a start of a thread. You expressed your opinion, then refused to explain yourself when asked. Why start something if you're not going to stick with it? That sir, is called trolling.

This isn't the first ISIS related terrorist attack. A few months ago an 18 year old in Melbourne stabbed a police officer to death and injured a fed before he shot and killed him. He'd organized to meet them outside a suburban police station to discuss his passport getting cancelled because he wanted to fight in Syria, and then he ambushed them. He was born in Australia to unobservant Afghan parents, but was radicalized at a Yugoslav mosque.
