Jef Rouner has chimed in. The guy who sent a picture of his young daughter to a pedophile SJW to make him feel better about outed as a predator.

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/...pedophile/

Rouner's argument is that it does not matter how much money the film makes, its all about the toys and secondary products. So basically they spend a quarter of a billion dollars to market toys, books and songs. The left has become so corporatist and soulless.

https://archive.is/3GwCe#selection-1609.0-1625.5

The comment section is smacking down his argument with numbers and he can't take it.

Quote:So awesome! I retweeted this dude's article and mentioned that he didn't take into account that the studio doesn't keep 100% of the box office take, and he blocked me! He apparently blocked a LOT of people for pointing out his obvious errors, instead of addressing the errors. If this were a real journalist and a real newspaper, some official CORRECTOINS on this story would be in order, because, honestly, did he research ANYTHING in doing this story? He just grabbed some numbers and tried to hammer them out to come out the way he wanted, oblivious to the way the actual business works.

So what's he doing now? He's on Twitter, LYING HIS ASS OFF, telling people that none of his critics addressed the actual issues. EXCUSE ME? The fact--the FACT, mind you--that the studio does not keep 100% of that box office is a MAJOR ISSUE when it comes to working out if this film is successful yet. I don't care if I'm blocked by a nobody journalist I'll never see or hear from again, but nobody journalist in question OWES ME AN APOLOGY for lying about me and other critics.

In another tweet, ironically enough, nobody journalist says that "being wrong doesn't make you open-minded, it just makes you wrong". He himself is his perfect example: he is wrong and has a closed-mind, and instead of dealing with contrary facts he just wants to shut eveybody up who disagrees with him. But blocking people on Twitter doesn't shut them up, it's just you hiding from facts you don't like.

I'm glad people called him out on that. The guy knows nothing about how the movie industry actually works and then uses his flawed thinking to justify a huge business flop.

Even if the $159 million was the take home for Sony (the net of $159m gross is probably around $90m) that still doesn't take into account the estimated $100 million they spent on advertising. Those fancy ads with Kobe during the NBA finals were not free.

This site has a good break down on how the numbers actually work out: http://deadline.com/2016/03/avengers-age...201725562/

His argument probably stems from the fact that Stars Wars merchandising has made many, many times more money for GL than the films ever did. However it goes without saying that Ghostbusters and Star Wars are a false equivalency, even if you compare the franchises pre-Paul Feig, Amy Schumer et al.

Here's a guy reading Lesdoggfart's (Leslie Jones) racist tweets and talking about what would happen if a white person said them.

Booyakasha!

Suicide Squad hated by the critics probably will make over 250 mil worldwide just this weekend alone!

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=4213&p=.htm

So Ghostbusters loved by the critics at 73% Rottentomatoes score barely makes 200 mil. with a larger marketing budget and Suicide Squad of comparable production budget makes likely 1 bio. $ while getting a 24% rating.

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/suicide_squad_2016/

They got 24% by critics and 74% by audience.

I guess so far SJW-feminism memes with ageing sluts and manbashing bitches doesn't sell so much for now.

It's actually a reasonable equivalency.

You're probably too young to have ever bought any of the amazing GB toys. The photon pack and trap kits, slime, toys, merch, etc. were incredibly popular back in the day.

You have to understand, after the movie, there was the ghost busters cartoon that ran for 7 seasons. I didn't even know there was a movie when I was growing up since that's the ghost busters most people my age watched. It's a bit like the batman the animated series where the series was better than some of the movies.

I have to think GB made shittons of money for everyone.

It is by all accounts a pretty terrible movie though, which is annoying as I was somewhat looking forward to it. However, you're right, as it shows the power of a film's success ultimately relies on audiences rather than critics....which in the age of agenda journalism, is probably a good thing. That's not to say Transformers 4 is a good film though, just because critics hated it Big Grin

Ghostbusters' foreign box office is a piddly 51 million. That is beyond awful for a tentpole film. Just the cost of getting foreign distributors to carry and market this film probably negates any profit.

It's even worse when you realize that 40% of the foreign box office gross came mostly from Australia and U.K. who are more "sympathetic" to feminist agenda driven films like this.

Even mainstream media pumping it full blast in the anglosphere couldn't save it from being a flop.

There's no way in hell they are going to make this up with merchandising or whatever crack they are smoking. Girls don't play with these types of
action figures to begin with.

Yes indeed.
If it was some random singular comedy. No real problem.
This was supposed to be a massive summer blockbuster of a very well known franchise.
All with the intent of establishing a host of sequels & other marketing opportunities.

As of now. It's no better than your average Adam Sandler film...

So far the movie has only grossed $160 million on a $144 million dollar budget. Putting it somewhere in Fan4stic territory.

Just in comparison, Paul Feig's other movies had budgets of around $50-60 million, and didn't have a powerful brand name like GB, and all managed to gross around $230 million or more, so this isn't a good sign no matter how they spin it. I predict it will still lose money factoring in the advertising costs.

No kidding! When I read Cibo's post, the nostalgia hit me like a motherfucker. We had all that shit. We would run around in the woods with half the kids in the neighborhood ghostbusting dogs and cats. Throwing the trap out pretending to catch them.

That cartoon was almost like a religion for us as kids as well. It was incredibly well done.

When suicide squad comes out here im going to go see it just for this reason, I noticed that even my favorite seemingly non biased youtube movie reviewer:YourMovieSucks Decided to bash this film hard and berate fans from getting mad about how people didnt like the bad reviews the movie got while ignoring the same thing over ghostbusters, hell he didnt even review that movie. So yeah, Im going to see this movie ESPECIALLY because all of the critics are saying its bad when they were all like *oh ghostbusters was SO good*

All this makes me done with listening to movie reviewers now, I cant take any of them seriously anymore.
El Chinito loco 路 2016-08-07 20:16:00 路 #817
This is why I actually liked Ebert's reviews. Despite being a lefty he was very astute in his critique and above all else he had integrity. He could tell you exactly why he reviewed a film the way he did and he was pretty consistent with his views. He was also one of those guys who had an encyclopedic knowledge about film.

With good movie reviewers (there are few left) they will still make you consider their points even if you don't initially agree with what they wrote. Roeper is decent and he was more of a protege of Ebert rather than a contemporary.

Most mainstream reviewers these days aren't really critics they are marketers for studios. Video game reviewers are even worse.

Amen to that.

Video game reviewers seem to have forgotten that percentiles don't start at fifty. The overwhelming sense is that they're reviewing games in the sense of 100% being a perfect game and 0% being a common garden rock.

"Oh yeah, well it's disc shaped and it fit in the machine so that's 50% right there".

Eh, Ebert gave Star Wars the Phantom Menace 4 out of 5 stars because he is friends of George Lucas.

I really don't think that was the case. He likes light hearted fluff like that from time to time. He explains why in his review. Ebert largely regarded SW as children's films and reviewed them from that point of view.

Attack of the clones got 2 stars from him.

All the mainstream media news wrote stuff like "Leslie Jones quitted Twitter in tears,
after an avalanche of assaults and racist harassments against her"under different variations.

But if you actually check her Twitter, she never stopped tweeting, she continues to tweet everyday and she is active on Twitter:

That is why I never buy any mainstream massmedia newspapers anymore since few years ago

It's also full of high fructose corn syrup which is guaranteed to make you gain weight. The original one from the late 80s might have also, since that was about the time sugar was replaced by HFCS in almost everything.

What's misogynist about Suicide Squad, exactly? The enemy is a woman, the lead cunt on the "good" side is a woman, the men are all basically pawns in the struggle. Harley Quinn is sexy in a way too fucking crazy to risk way, and that's all it takes?

I saw it last night. Thought it was alright, but they didn't do enough to build rapport among the members of the squad for me to buy into the climax. It could've used about 20 more minutes in the middle to do that; as is, it felt like the film was rushed to completion.

Edit - I also thought Will Smith was miscast as Deadshot. Will Smith only plays Will Smith, and he just didn't feel right in the role. He wasn't terrible, just... didn't quite fit. A better choice isn't coming immediately to mind, though.
