RE: 1 Year Drinking Wagon Challenge for 2014
After six weeks or so being sober, I caved in at a freshman party. Nothing drastic, drank a bottle of wine and had a steady buzz which helped me tremedously, made out with 3 chicks and have organized dates with all three. While the challenge has been interesting, I just cannot see the gaming benefits for a young guy like myself who can stick to moderate amounts. My detox ends here, but I wish others good luck on their own journey.

Bilbo, thanks for the post. As I said before, I never thought a wagon really made sense for someone your age except in extraordinary circumstances, so that sounds fine. This is a time when a guy can have his drinks with relative impunity, so might as well get them in.

Given what you wrote before about alcoholism in your family, I would just suggest that you watch it as the years go on and never let it get out of hand -- and don't hesitate to put a stop to it if it ever does. Having alcoholism in the family does not mean you can't be a lifelong moderate/social drinker, but it does mean you'll have to be a little more vigilant than most guys.

In the meantime, enjoy your drinks and make the best of it.

Every stupid thing I've ever done was when I was hungover or drunk starting from age 13.

If I could go back and do one thing over I know I would never drink.

Good luck.

Days move slower than I thought, I still don't know what I should do with my life, I quit my jobs, refused another job offer, finished an interview for a sale position and I still haven't figure out what is I want to do(the truth is I want to do fuck all), sometime I feel a little bit envious of those college graduated guys who follow life by the scripts. I know everyone feel this way at least once in their life so I just type gibberish into the screen.

I'm in the same boat man.
But the good thing is that you are keeping all doors open.
I declined two reasonable job offers last week also. I just can't stand the idea of making someone else rich, I rather do something on my own.
Two day later I got a unexpected phone call and all of a sudden I'm abroad again and hustling money. One thing leads into another and I have no idea where this will take me or where it will end.

Go with flow and be patient, keep your eyes open and try to stay sober.
Things will happen.

Being drunk is a double edged sword.
It has great potential of both closing and also opening new doors in life.

Biz, welcome back, I've been wondering how you were doing.

Are you asking about the new start date? It should probably be the 13th which sounds like the day you decided to get back on.

Please confirm that you are back in for a full year. You've done 4 months before, so you know that you can do it.

Anyone here ever blacked out and made an idiot of themselves? This happened to me recently at a friends engagement party. I had a little bit too much to drink at the party, (as well as a bunch of wine at a special dinner I was at before), and acted like an idiot. Makes me so anxious to even think about it as this is 16 year old teenager behavior. Just trying to figure out how to make it up to my friend and redeem my image. Any tips?

Definitely almost a 'scared straight'' moment to remember to pace myself and slow it down.

RE: 1 Year Drinking Wagon Challenge for 2014
Lizard,

I decided on the 12th that the prior night was the last. I woke up still half drunk from a 3 day binge. Was bad.

But decided that day that that was is time for a change. I didn't drink that night, but I woke up on the 13th and it just hit me, the reset button was engaged. I decided to read the book The Power of Now, which has been on my shelf for years and never read. It was the perfect thing to read at the perfect time, got almost halfway through and was shocked at how much it's spot on with my thought patterns.

Too many times. Most of the time it's not as bad as the following day's hangover/anxiety would have you believe.

But an awful feeling nonetheless.

Think about yourself in third person Kdog.
If one of your friends did this, for how long would you care or think about it?
2min? 5min? Not very fucking long and it would be more or less forgotten.

People care less about you than you think and have other stuff to talk about than you making an idiot of yourself.

However, it's a shit feeling yeah.

Just don't try to over redeem your imagine, it would look silly.
Move on like business as usual and don't make a big deal out of it.

Biz, welcome back aboard as of October 13. Please post some updates as time goes on.

I have confidence that you can do a 1 year wagon. You just have to remember at a critical moment (which might be months from now) that you made a decision for very good reasons, and you're going to stick to it no matter what.

I've embarrassed myself, assaulted people (including friends), done very morally questionable shit that was completely out of character, and overall acted like a psycho more times than I can count. My experience is that the majority of people care more about what you're doing and who you are NOW than they do about the past. With some exceptions of course.

Focus on being the person you want to be now and let the past go, especially brief moments where you fucked up. This moment is all you can control. We've all made mistakes, including the people who saw you make yours, and people put way much more thought into their own problems, shortcomings, and daily dramas than they ever will yours.

"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. To be your own man is a hard business. If you try it, you'll be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself." - Rudyard Kipling

After the recent bout of Alcohol poisoning and coming as close to death as I ever have, I think it's prudent for me to join this wagon for a while.

Nah dude, you don't need to be on this thread. Just lick your wounds for a week and learn your lesson and don't do stupid shit like knocking back 19 shots in an hour (or even a night). Pace yourself like a reasonable human being.

This thread is for guys who have been drinking hard in some cases for as long as you've been alive, or for half that time. They are the ones who need a real wagon. You just need to be a little smarter.

I completely understand you, I'll just take a two week hiatus and get back in the game.

Felix, 6 months is an excellent milestone. Good job, and keep it going. And I like your intuition that this was a good time to bump the thread --I feel the same way.

As far as some things going well and others not so well... sounds like the way life usually goes. But if you feel like going into more detail about either one or the other or both, please do.

RE: 1 Year Drinking Wagon Challenge for 2014
Just hit 5 months. Things seem to be organically getting better all the time now after several months of dullness and complacency.

I have no problem not drinking. I'm around it all the time and I'm always so glad I just drink water. It's still a little weird because I'm not at the same level when talking to people (guys with their heart to heart stuff, and girls with the sexual vibe) but it's coming along.

My biggest vice right now is coffee. It's one of the few things I look forward to having but I know it's screwing me up.

Well, the good thing is I managed to cupped my undesirable habits and keep my preferable habits now.

The not so good is I still just haven't figure out what kind of job I should do.

RE: 1 Year Drinking Wagon Challenge for 2014
Fisto, you can keep the coffee, just don't abuse it. Have exactly one cup a day, and never on an empty stomach. The best way to consume coffee is to ritualize it -- have it around the same time every day, after either breakfast or lunch. That way you can still ritually look forward to it and have it, and get pretty much all the benefits with almost none of the downside. Coffee is a vice you can keep but it really rewards moderation and consistency.

You will find that your overall well-being, sleep, and very possibly the tinnitus, will improve if you regularize and ritualize coffee and keep it to one cup a day after a meal.

Otherwise, it's great to hear about your wagon running on a good track, and now the key is to keep it going. Realize that there may still be some rough patches and challenges ahead here and there and just take them in stride if and when they come.

Fell off yesterday. No reason to lie here.

Got thrown out of a club, woke up in a strange place, spent a lot of money.
Total blackout.
Hardcore hangover still at 5pm and unable to get out of bed.

Hugely disappointed with myself, to say the least.

Chaos,

Don't waste any time being disappointed in yourself.

You can see that when you drink, it doesn't go well and doesn't do you any justice. You're better off without it, but you will see the real benefits if you stick to it long enough over time and are patient.

Just restart immediately.
