There is a great blogger on watches who calls himself the 'watch snob'. Worth reading his posts, especially if you are considering purchasing a higher end watch.

He disses a lot of the hyped brands, even ones I admired and considered purchasing

Really, most people buy a watch based on its appearance and opinions of friends. Who really knows how a patek differs from rolex etc. He gives his opinions as a true affocianado. His identity is not known but presumably he's a watch maker.

Movado was pretty much done many years ago, didn't Sampras use to advertise them!

All fashion brands are garbage, Emporio Armani, Boss, Vuitton etc.

Breitling are nice but I would get the Navitimer model which has a history. I think the whole clunky chronograph thing has been done to death now.

Tag Heuer aren't probably high on the list but they are a good "starter" watch. The Monaco model is a classic and of course style icon Steve Mcqueen use to wear one.

Rolex I think are always decent if you sport the right one. I am a fan off the datejust model, my "baller" friend in Dubai says they are for girls. He sports an all gold president.

Omega makes some nice watches, I would stay away from the James Bond model. Like Ali said he is a fictional character.

Yea, omega did some weird shut and made a "james bond" limited edition watch. It had 007 actually printed on the watch face, which is super gay. It's not even the watch that Craig wore in the movie, which was a blue face Aqua Terra, which is actually a beautiful watch. ( of course this only references the skyfall movie). I think previous bond watches were standard seamasters. Prior to Brosnan they were Rolex submariners, which are respectable watches, and actually McQueen wore a submariner as his normal watch.

I get a lot of questions about it, more than any watch I've owned. Bracelets>watches>rings. Not sure where a necklace fits in that equation, but there's something about the wrist being "neutral", to where girls will subconsciously reach to what you have on it and start playing with it. I have no idea why. I have advanced techniques for that situation also.

Like partyonbro stated, always wear something on your wrist, but not both. Too try hard. That bracelet isn't something most brave enough to wear.

The reason I tell you to unplug from Hollywood and GQ is because what their selling is all guys will be wearing. If you want to stand out you have to be creative, and putting in the extra work will forge that unique edge.

I get more IOIs when wearing a scarf with my wool car coat than without. I think it completes the cold weather look. I use the ascot knot, that weird shut where they fold it in half and tuck the loose end through the loop is for girls, also wastes too much of the warmth the scarf is there to provide.

Of course it HAS to be functional. Don't wear it like jewelry. If it's cold out you can get out the wool or cashmere scarf. If you find yourself hiking through the desert bust out a white linen scarf... That's about it. There is little room in a man's wardrobe for nonfunctional items.

I agree with what you are saying. I was drawn to those images, and subsequently the watches those men were sporting. They speak to me.

I have a Nixon white silicone Player and I hate it. Since I've been dressing nicer and upgrading my style I feel like I've outgrown it. I've been going watchless the past 6-9 months and still feel naked without one. Watches here in BKK are all imported though and crazy expensive. Gonna wait until I go back to the states to grab something.

I love the gold and blue Rolex Submariner, but way out of my price range. I think a good rule of thumb is don't buy a watch that you can't afford to lose. If I had a Rolex and lost it I'd cry for a month. I learned that lesson when I was like 18 and got into a fight. Took off my Seiko (which at the time I thought was the dopest watch ever) and put it in my pocket before I blasted some guy. Turned into a multi-person scuffle and I didn't realize my watch had fallen out of my pocket until later that night. Gone.

A hot one isn't a bad idea. They look to be going for ~10k on eBay, which is way out of my price range. Hot one could probably be had significantly cheaper. Don't know anyone in that game though that I could trust isn't an undercover or snitch.

It looks cool but I think any watch over 40mm looks goofy when actually on your wrist. That IWC definitely dominates his wrist.

I think it depends on the size of your wrists, if they are too small you won't be able pull it it off. I tried it on a couple of years ago and it didn't look right on me unfortunately.

Those aren't bad, especially in that size. Nason's aren't just about looks, but fit. I've never put on a better feeling boot. They fit like they were custom fitted to your foot. The boots do run big, so I believe you'll be ok in a 14.

Another amazing fact: I never sprained an ankle in Nason's.

A watch is so integral to my style that I didn't even think of it as an accessory. I bought a mechanical for 200 bucks about four years ago. Clear glass back and cutaway in the front to show the gears. I'm quite used to getting "nice watch, is it real" as an opener. Guesses on price usually range between 1k to 10k, which shows you how little the average person knows about watches.
