Greens are your friend. Beets are great for the wood and celery.

I should eat more fruit, but the fruit they sell has no seeds and tastes like chemicals where I live.

Morning wood is a great sign that things are working well.

Probably, if there are ways to measure woody consistency, then that would be good. I think I had a woody all through my highschool years, but after going into my upper 40s, it surely does not seem to come as easily.

For example, in my 20s, there were times of sex 5 times a day (I think even in my 30s), but currently, in my 50s, if I can perform a couple of times a day I am doing well, and if I see my gf - which might be over a three day period of time, I have to work various techniques to keep the woody coming - which sometimes just doesn't seem to work - even though I am turned on by her..

And this ability to woody can change with amount of rest, exercise and diet, and likely a good thing to measure health.

I personally have a different way of thinking that you, rudebwoy, at least in terms of the value of meat in regards to good nutrition. Likely there are aspects we could agree upon, such as the dangers of too many carbohydrates (at least the junk food aspects), but then there are also theories that if you eat too much meat without fat, then that is not good for you, either because if you eat too many proteins there is a Gluconeogenesis issue (which means turning the excess protein to sugar).

I personally consider that eating meat with its fat to be the best (I say, "don't trim the fat,"), and mostly I came to these conclusions into my mid-40s and after reading a lot about differentiating fats and about good fats versus bad fats (mostly the artificial ones - partially hydrogenated ones). Furthermore, , and trying to cook with natural oils to be good, such as coconut oil or animal fats, and not any of the oils that say partially hydrogenated on them...

My problem with red meat is because of health reasons, I have issues with high blood pressure and meat doesn't help the situation.

With all animal products, there is an issue with parasites and worms being in fish, chicken and beef. The same parasites will sit in your stomach and feed of the food you are eating, this leads to a few health problems I could do without.

Yes, I eat fish and chicken but I make a conscious effort to have at least 4 meat free days per week.
I tried the vegan thing way back and it isn't easy to keep up.
I hardly eat dairy products because that creates mucus and I don't like having that feeling.

Please don't turn this into a big debate, I have done the research and it isn't a question of being right or wrong. It is a personal choice which I find is working for me somewhat.

Actually, we could be delving into a bit of off-topicness (even though a lot of these matters can be related to older guy issues), and I did attempt to allow for individual variation in my response to you because I am certainly of the sense that guys have to attempt to tailor their diet, exercise and sleep practices to their own ways of thinking and perceptions of their body's response to various tweaks that they might make with the passage of time.

There are some things that I have become more convinced of with my own passage of certain age thresholds, and likely are not disagreeable for other guys, even though some guys might have been able to stave off some of the same physical issues that I have had, or maybe I have been more lucky (or had some better practices) that caused some good outcomes in my own state of health.

One of the BIG deals does remain insulin resistance and a guy's ability to recover from inflammation - that could come from a variety of reasons, whether dietary, over exercise, going out on a night of drinking or not sleeping enough (which may relate to other kinds of life stresses). Thoughts of these kinds of issues becomes more relevant with aging, because there are likely a large number of us who engaged in some practices in our teens, 20s and 30s, that we genuinely we thought to be healthy or at least I used to kind of think that whatever did not kill me would make me stronger, and I became less of a believer in that principle after getting into my 40s and having some health issues that were not apparent earlier in my life.

For example, about 8 years ago, I became a bit more rigorous about figuring out my health and energy situation, which included diet, exercise and sleep changes (or at least efforts in regards to each of those), my diet part did involve cutting a lot of carbs, but I started from the obviously worse carbs (high sugar content, processed and bad oils) first, so there were a variety of immediate improvements, yet in recent years, I had been reading about the benefits of having some resistance starches in the diet, so that knowledge caused me to experiment towards allowing more carbs into my diet, which also can cause a bit of a carb creep (which seems to have happened with me).

I guess part of my point remains that each of us may be continuously tweaking and even changing our perspectives of what seems to be working for us.. and maybe what we believe to be the reasons for some energy level ideas (such as having a woody in the morning) going in the right direction or not.

You make a lot of good points in your above post, but you don't really say how you treat fats and oils in your diet or perhaps the approximate percentages and types of fats and oils.

I'm not a dietician. These things will largely have to be decided by you. I don't know what foods you like or tolerate. I don't know how your body processes these things you ask about. I know you're asking for generalities and not specifically for you, but my point is, you should have a pretty good idea how you eat and what will work for you. It's not as strict as you'd imagine.

What I do and what works for me and has worked for others who have asked for my advice:

Don't make it more complicated than it is. I can tell you that for certain. Don't do that. Don't over-think it. Don't look at the millions of BS sites trying to sell you something or convince you of some weird sorcery nonsense. There is no need to invent new mathematics to figure out what to eat. Just eat normal, clean, food.

1. I do not count calories.

2. I do not do "macros".

3. A protein is a lean meat that you bought and prepared. It's not a ham sandwich or something you got at the gas station. Steak, lean ground beef, chicken, or fish (sometimes pork, I'm not scared of lean pork)--how much? I have no clue. It depends on how hungry I am, of course. For me that's usually a 6-9 oz steak or maybe 1.5 chicken breast fillets, something like that. Sometimes I eat a few eggs.

I also usually have a protein shake with my meal.

4. A carb is whole grain rice, whole grain pasta, or some sort of potato. Like someone else mentioned, I too, love bread, so sometimes that's my carb. If you must have fruit, then that could be a carb, but I don't eat that stuff and I never drink fruit juice. How many carbs? I couldn't tell you for sure. I do consciously limit my carbs if I am trying to cut weight and definitely if I don't get a good workout in or am unable to work out for some reason. Other than that, about a fist-sized portion usually works for me.

5. How much fat do I eat? I have no idea. I do not intentionally consume fat, it's more like a by-product. I get it in cooking oils (low temperature cooking--olive oil, high temperature cooking--coconut oil), cheese, eggs, avocados, almonds, walnuts, salad dressing (usually olive oil, vinegar, and pepper, but sometimes I'll splurge on a little ranch). I like peanut butter--It goes in my protein shake. Lowfat milk with a high fiber cereal. Trust me, you're not going to have any problems "finding" fat if you eat a varied diet. I also take 1800mg of fish oil/day.

6. Vegetables: I don't care. You can't really eat too much. You'll get sick of them before you get enough. If you eat a reasonable portion of meat, eat a reasonable portion of carbs, fill the rest with vegetables. Eat as much as you want. I like beans, so I usually have some kind of beans with every meal and usually eat an all-veggie dinner salad. I'm also a big fan of broccoli, mustard greens, kale, corn, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, and mushrooms. But, the more colors the better. All those different colors have different functions and properties.

7. Drink way more water than you think you need. I drink almost continuously all day long. Invest in a Nalgene bottle and carry with you like it's your job. This also helps to keep you from feeling hungry. Stop drinking water one hour before you go to bed because you don't want a piss call to wake you from your sleep. Uninterrupted sleep is very important in this style of diet. It's where your body does it's magic.

Sleep maintenance: You're gonna have to figure this out on your own, too. I sleep almost 7 hours/night. I'm in bed at 22:00 and I'm up at 04:45. Even on the weekends. Alcohol will dick up your sleep and it's bad for you. Don't do it.
One hour before bed, the phone goes on silent mode and onto the charger face down. The TV is off. Get yourself a DVR if you like late-night TV. No TV in your bedroom. Just get rid of it. If you're in bed, you're sleeping or fucking, not watching tv. I do a very light stretch--nothing strenuous, nothing lengthy. Then I clean up--shower, brush my teeth, etc. Go to bed. Lights off. If you're not sleepy you can read a bit--have a low-power lamp by your bed. Don't use the overhead light and definitely not a light you have to get up to turn off. I also use soft foam earplugs and have all the ambient light from outside blocked out. No bright digital clocks. I turn the air down at night. The room is cold, dark, and silent (until my dog moves and screws that up, but for the most part, he sleeps soundly all night, too).
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

It's really that simple. I say all this assuming you are working out. If you're trying to be healthy and not working out it's like trying to have sex with your clothes on.

I don't do a lot of cardio anymore. Just 2 times/week. Focus on strength training! It's much more fun and making gains in the gym is far more satisfying than riding a stationary bike. If you're putting up weight, you're going to lose fat--I promise--especially if you're doing IF.

Stop weighing yourself every day. All those numbers and shit are just gonna be a distraction. Weigh yourself once a week at most.

Do not compare yourself to other dudes in the gym! Do your own shit. Compare yourself to an earlier version of yourself, not to others.

Record your workouts. If you're not writing it down, then you're not really serious. Don't try to remember what you did last week. Don't go into the gym not knowing what exercises you are going to do or not knowing the amount of weight you did last week...

And finally, don't let where you are today prevent you from going to where you want to be later on. Everybody has bad days. You have to fight through that shit and re-engage it at your very next opportunity.

You must have discipline.

As soon as you let weakness start creeping, it's infectious. It starts with the snooze button, then it's a "cheat" meal or eating outside your window, then you skip "leg day," next you skip workouts, then you're chugging back brews in the evening, eating fast food, and the spiral goes on and on. You have to be stubborn and just make the decision to be healthy and don't waiver.

Hope that helps!

I was in full boner beast mode by the end of that and dropped a pant size.

I have always looked after myself to the point of obsession, If your not the type of person to do this, I guess things will be very different for you as you age.

Not trying to talk it up but to add perspective, I would say Im in the top 10 to 5 % of guys for my age looks and fitness wise. Its great, very powerful motivator for me. When I was 20 I was way outclassed, competition is fierce at this age. Guys I knew from my past that way out competed me and girls that were way way out of my league I still know, well, father time has been very cruel to. A guy that was the shit in high school looks a good bit like Winston Churchill now. lol.

This is all vain pretentious shit I know, but that is very much part of who we are as human beings. Personally as a single guy with no kids never married Im in a great place, but I do know I need to start acting soon to secure a quality mate and kids. And I do have many, many regrets.

Don't sweat it too much. You would probably be a prized catch in Colombia for the foreseeable future.

Back then it actually used the accelerometer in the iPhone to detect sleep patterns by putting the phone under your mattress, or on a corner of your mattress. It then took about two nights to dial-in on the amount of movement in your bed setup to understand when you were asleep.

Now Sleep Cycle uses a microphone to record your sleep noises, and it does filter out fan and other noises. However, you can change it back to accelerometer mode if you want.

Ok, I'll bite. Porn kills your desire for real women. Go live on a farm for a month and never touch your dick and then come back to the city and see how you react to the first 4 you see in the street.

Try reading this thread, cut or dramatically reduce porn consumption. After a week you won't need any extra stimuli to increase you sex drive.

RE: Older Guys (40+)
Watching porn is the exact opposite of what you should do. Stop watching porn and stop fapping. Go on at least 30 days of neither. But permanently is better.

At the same check your testosterone and very important your estradiol levels. What are they? If T is low or estradiol is high this may be your problem. Do you have other symptoms, lack of ambition or drive at work, weight gain, mild depression, other endocrine problems like high blood sugar or pre-diabetic. And another symptom that is an indicator and is more controversial, do you have low cholesterol. When I say low cholesterol I mean under 200. Remember cholesterol is a very important component in the building of your steroid hormones. If you do not have enough of it or are taking statin drugs you may not have enough.

Also look at your diet, remove sugar, carbs, and most importantly any type of unsaturated fat, so any vegetable oils, canola oils, and the worst is soybean oil. Which is in about every processed food. Soybeans are highly estrogenic. Start consumption of healthy and necessary saturated fats such as coconut oil, butter, animal fats, olive oil (not cooking with it).

Finally, take a look at building your oxytocin. This is harder than the other things because the best way to build oxytocin is with prolonged intimate contact with a woman. Kind of a catch 22 situation. But the building of oxytocin is the strongest factor in increasing your sex drive.

I was able to increase my sex drive and increase my T levels and drop my estradiol and lose 28 pounds and never took a single injection of T. And I did all this while under the care of a doctor that specialized in testosterone treatments. I am in my mid-fifties and feel better and hornier than ever. It can be done

RE: Older Guys (40+)
I am at work right now, and I have to use my phone to write, but I want to get these thoughts out now otherwise I'll just criticize Myself into silence. The statements I'm going to make me seem very low value, however, I see them as fundamentals that I and others who are introverts forget quickly.

The first one is, get around people, just get around them, it could be at a lunch cafeteria at at a school, it could be at a McDonald's, it could be at a Starbucks, it could be at a local bar even if you don't drink, order a Coke, or order a Coke and a beer, put the beer on the table and drink The coke if you don't drink. Just get around people, don't perform if you can't, they have an electricity that an intro introverts soul can feed on, it can automatically raise your mood and well-being, please trust me on this , I have been a serious introvert and hermit at times and have had the experience of my mood being raised by being around people so many times now, that I consider it an indisputable formula.

The next one is related to health. I'm noticing a lot of dizziness lately, and what I'm thinking is that I absolutely must do a cardiovascular routine, such as running, or running in place, or something that is seriously elevates my heart rate and makes me breathe hard for 10 to 20 minutes a day. I think the dizziness is happening now because I am older and the veins or my heart or something related to my anatomy is shrinking from years and years of gravity, just like A persons neck will eventually fall forward from the effects of gravity, I've almost feel like my veins or whatever feeds the brain blood and oxygen, those pathways may be shrinking, and I feel like cardiovascular exercise Will re-open those pathways and make feeding the brain the blood and oxygen that it needs a lot more probable.

These two statements may seem incredibly obvious to many on this forum, but I know from my personal experience that I have read many good things and agreed with them in my mind, but did not put them in Into practice in reality.

Life is serious now, I am mid 50s and cannot stop thinking about my mortality. I noticed people are beginning to pass away now. In other words, I'm at the beginning of the end. I don't mean to sound melodramatic, but this is the truth that I feel.

Zep, first, thanks for the honest thoughts.

I work on a computer and have had the tendency to slide into introversion occasionally, such as for a few months, every few years. I have followed advice on this forum to get out and lot and just interact with everyone, baristas, joke with the hostess and at a restaurant, act funny and cocky, work on inner game so that my identity matches these actions and I don't seem like I'm trying. Last night I met some chick at a cheap chain steakhouse and I spent five minutes joking with the hostess that I was on an awkward Tinder date that she might have to rescue me from. (I actually did a first date make-out in the chicks car, had bad logistics for a bang)

If I do not perform some kind of very intense heart rate activity on a regular basis, and get solid sleep, then I develop orthostatic hypotension (dizzyness upon standing) and high blood pressure. I personally enjoy roller blading/skating, rock climbing (haven't done in over a year, tbh), skateboarding, ocean swimming, some lifting, hard fucking, and other things. If I don't stay active I get depressed and feel like shit. I skipped a big workout this weekend to go pistol shooting, which was fun but didn't get my heart jacked and I can tell now that Monday morning has rolled around. BTW, I fucking hate running.

This is your life, no one is going to take care of it for you. To maintain cardiovascular health you require some regular intense activity (and don't read this to say you should be running marathons). If you enjoy the activity then you will not even realize you are 'exercising'. I just spent some time in the Caribbean and did tons of activity, no 'exercise' and came back feeling like a ninja. Now within a week of being back and not exercising I was loosing that blissful feeling and had to go do some of the aforementioned activities that are a necessary part of my routine when in the US.

Now, I need to fucking bench. I lifted a lot when younger but I really need to maintain my muscle mass and can't seem to get back into a routine of lifting and have fat on my chest that I am so sick of. That is where I"m falling down.

Statistically speaking every guy in this thread is either in the beginning of the end, or further into the end, and surely to make this period of our lives enjoyable, there is a need for both sound mind and sound body. Perhaps the body part is more difficult because it is going to inevitably decline, even in spite of efforts, yet mind and body remain connected in terms of any guy's ability to keep his mood up during periods of declining energy.

I do agree that it is good to keep up some activities that put you around people - whether hobbies or just finding a way to get out there and mingling. Exercise can frequently be a way to get your body energies up, but it is not always an easy way to meet people, whether in the gym or some other activities.

Surely, one of my activities of salsa dancing (for more than 16 years now) has been a pretty decent way for me to get around people, yet sometimes it can be good to NOT overdo it, too. I do see some guys and gals who are in the dance scene who should NOT be there on some days, because they cannot even fake being content with themselves, so their negative energy tends to be contagious, just like positive energy can be contagious, so if you don't overdo any of these social activities, then you will likely allow the negative energy to roll off your back.

By the way, I have gone through phases in which I tentatively conclude that salsa dancing is enough exercise for me.. and maybe combine that with the exercise from sex -- but in the end, both dancing and sex tend to be quite insufficient in the necessary exercise either to maintain or to improve (unless a guy is really really out of shape and the maintenance level is really low). In the end, both cardiovascular and resistance training seems to be necessary, and even helps in the performance of dance (energy) and sex (which also sometimes can require a decent amount of energy and in-shapeness).

If a guy is really out of shape, then it is a lot easier just to add a couple of days a week (perhaps one day resistance training and another day cardiovascular) than to attempt to do too much at once and not be able to keep up the routine, and as strength and endurance increases, then it even becomes more desireable to add exercise days. Regarding hating running, I have never been a great fan of running, even though through the years I have done it so much (as a go to exercise) because it is so portable of an exercise. You can walk, and walk fast (like power walking). Increase and decrease your pace and even throw in a few sprints, which can be quite exhausting, but gets easier as you get used to doing these things - even though there are going to be up and down days, even if a routine is kept.

Are you dehydrated? Especially later in the day, as you age you may need more water. That will cause dizziness.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed I make it to at least 50 before I start talking to myself in public. So far only memory, hair, joints and digestive system are starting to malfunction. Well, the hair for the last 15 years.

You can take aspirin in low doses if you're concerned about stroke and circulation. Apart from other benefits, like reduced inflammation it thins the blood. Don't take if you have stomach issues though.

RE: Older Guys (40+)
Sometimes I get such a kick out of myself and my confidence, and sometimes it seems that confidence comes with becoming more elderly - even though there certainly are some downsides to "elderly" in the event that a guy is NOT able to sufficiently keep up his physical strength (and of course, as a given, physical power is not the ONLY thing that gives power to a guy in the eyes of a girl or the rest of the community, which is a guy has to have achieved a certain level of financial success by the time he reaches a certain age - especially older than 40 years in order to be in the ballpark of "power.")

With my last few girlfriends, I have had this tendency to use an expression with them to inquire about scheduling, and I will say something like "What time you coming over for ___________ ?" With the blank being some euphemistic term for sex (I don't want to give away my "trade secret" word which changes from time to time.)

In the beginning, frequently the girl will object and say "I am not that kind of girl" blah blah blah... but most of the time, after repetition, she just goes along with it, and really the implication that a significant reason for "hanging out" remains that she has "duties" to perform.

One time, about a year ago, I accidentally sent such text to my mom - whoops.... the use of a euphemism did allow for plausible deniability - even though I doubt that my mom is even that dumb to have not been able to figure it out. hahahahaha

Man, my energy levels are hella low! I thought it was the Low T, but i've been on TRT & Vitamin B injections plus Vitamin D supplements for awhile and not really feeling much energized. Someone suggested it's the Intermittent Fasting and not enough calories to sustain work-outs and daily energy expenditure. Any suggestions on what to check next?

Statistically speaking, that is true. Yet we have all known younger people who who were actually close to the end and didn't know it, as they met with early deaths. None of us know how long our time is. If you're 40, you might have 40-50 relatively healthy years ahead - or you might not. One thing is for sure, I'm very grateful for each day now I'm over 40. Seeing the sunrise or sleeping with a young woman - even if she's no "9" - is a joy and a privilege. Most of our ancestors never made it this far.

I think you missed the word "statistically" in JayJuanGee's post. You can always, with enough aggregated data points, point out a case to the contrary, e.g., an outlier. Hence, statistical mean/median, has deviation/variance, by definition, built into it.

Schedule a good blood test panel as soon as possible to diagnose a potential cause of the symptoms (especially if they lasted more than a couple weeks) instead of trying things by hit or miss 'procedure'. There are many potential causes and it actually makes little sense to seek medical advice on the internet forum (even if all the people here were medics). You may have low iron level (of which consequence is low energy, lethargy, tiredness) and quite a frequent cause of such symptoms but as I said there are hundreds of potential causes of abnormally low energy level and it may have nothing to do with iron. Just go to see your GP first.

True, true. I've been working with my TRT Doc, addressing it incrementally through process of elimination, but I plan on working with my PCP as soon as my new insurance kicks in.
