If that book surprised you guys it will be interesting to see your reaction to my assigned reading in my AP Lang class-- http://katiehamilton25.blogspot.com/2012...heory.html
and other such feminist critiques of the scarlet letter.

Roosh's brother needs to do the minimum needed to get the lowest grade he's willing to accept in school on these kinds of assignments.

The bigger picture is that the readig selections are garbage.

The Great Gatsby? How about The Not So Great Guy Who is Alpha in Making Money but Beta/Omega in his Oneitis for a Worthless Vapid Woman?

Of Mice and Men. A good book but my female teacher never went into any detail as to why Curley wore a glove filled with vaseline. Also, why was his wife flirting with ranch hands and letting a big brute like Lennie stroke her hair. Possibly because her husband had a soft hand.

Death of a Salesman. Sorry Miller in this shithole that America has become being well liked is more important than education and smarts. Will Loman was a salesman, he knew what was up.

The Sound and the Fury. Sorry teach, there is an explanation for why Caddy is in love with Dalton Ames. (He's an Alpha Cad.)

Barry Lyndon was a PUA as well.

Bang 18th century Europe.

Yes, he does. It just takes a while.

The book starts with Huck being condescending towards Jim but as he gets to know Jim, he realizes the humanity in Jim and begins to question why people think of slaves as non-human. It had to start with Huck being insensitive and immature, though, so we could see how he changes.

One profound passage has Huck realizing that Jim has feelings about his family, like the rest of us. This was a pretty bold statement to make in an era when most people thought of African-Americans as little more than property. Slavery had only officially ended two years before the book was published in the US. The concept of African-Americans as people who deserved freedom was not widely shared. In its time, all of this was heavily controversial.

Back to the book: later on when Jim is captured in Arkansas, Huck frees him (so much for Huck not doing a damn thing for Jim). Huck does this despite thinking he'll go to hell because at the time, churches taught such things were a sin. Huck would also have been breaking the law.

By the time the journey ends, the two have formed a bond beyond the bounds of race. Huck didn't "sell Jim down the river."

The novel is banned for one reason: it uses the n-word. Jim is referred to as Ni**er Jim. This is the way blacks were referred to in that era.

I can understand thinking this view paints whites in a negative light. It does. But the point was that people can change themselves and the way they see others -- Huck was a metaphor and I think he still stands as a good one.

Thanks for that. Well said.

"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. To be your own man is a hard business. If you try it, you'll be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself." - Rudyard Kipling

I'd be curious to know where this summer reading list was conceived. To my knowledge, this novel isn't on a Common Core suggested reading list. Was this generated at the classroom level, grade level, school level, district, etc.?

An increasingly selfish side of me thinks that the more men who read this type of nonsense, the lesser my competition will become.

If you're interested Uncle, I could generate a quick High School reading list of masculine novels that are completely age appropriate and equally eye opening. IIRC your brother is 15?

He doesn't even know who his teacher is yet. I'm pretty sure it's based on the county curriculum instead of the teacher selection. It seems like all incoming seniors have to read the same books.

It's more important that your brother knows how to think than it is what information he's exposed to. Assuming he's got the masculine scientific and reasoning mind then he'll power through this book without gaining more than a grade.

From what I just read online, the author Kate Chopin was heavily influenced by de Maupassant, which is not a bad place to be.

If this was on the dreaded summer reading list, it's hard to judge without seeing the rest of the list. Maybe stuff like The Naked and the Dead is on it.

Reading lots of stuff of all kinds is a good thing. Fictional protagonists do not have to be morally admirable.

RE: Look at what they're making high school boys read
I can identify with this.

As a senior, just last year, we spent months on 'The Handmaid's Tale' by Margaret Atwood, a dystopian novel that explores 'patriarchy', 'oppression' and is a scathing critique of religion and traditional values with regards the role of women (note the buzz words) - the tutor, a raging feminist, had selected the book for us to do herself. I doubt her selection was based on the literary excellence of the novel, it was more likely to do with the chance to spout some feminazism and bring yet more man-hating into the curriculum.

Fortunately, and much to her displeasure, I and the four other guys in the class made a point to vocalize how shit the book was every lesson, and those guys aren't necessarily red pill. It just goes to show that even regular guys recognize the extent to which this crap is pushed upon us from an early age - it is ironic then that the guys most successful with women see it for what it is from an early age, too.

Ahhh i remember reading that book for AP Lit.

My teacher hated me because i boiled down the entire book as a woman who didn't like her privileged life in the 19th century and was content with throwing it all away.

The best part is when she walks in the ocean. Stupid stupid book. There isn't much man hating in that, just a woman whining about her boring her affluence is. Basically hamsterism from the late 19th century.

Tell him to compare Edna to a modern spinster who abandons her children (who will now grow up motherless in the early 20th century) and is never able to satisfy her hamsterism. Hopefully he won't have to ready "Their Eyes Were Watching God". Horrible books. At least she walks into the ocean.

High school kids should read Harrison Bergeron over and over. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of their teachers and administrators didn't really get it.

In my school we read Plato, Aristotle, Homer's Illiad, Machiavelli, St. Augustine, Kant, Voltaire and on the lighter side we had Shakespeare, Chaucer, Byron and Dickens among others. In my spare time I read Marx and Lenin. I went to a Catholic school and the clergymen instilled in us the virtues of the Greek and Roman classics as well as pointing out that learning Latin was a vital stage in the building blocks of learning a modern European language. I'm sorry I never took Latin, Greek or Hebrew courses that were offered.

RE: Look at what they're making high school boys read
DId anyone post the Wiki summary yet?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Awakening_(novel)

It's a book about a mom who abandons her children and husband to fuck around with some alpha:

With the summer vacation over, the Pontelliers return to New Orleans. Edna gradually reassesses her priorities and takes a more active role in her own happiness. She starts to isolate herself from New Orleans society and withdraw from some of the duties traditionally associated with motherhood. Léonce eventually talks to a doctor to diagnose her, fearing she is losing her mental faculties. The doctor advises Léonce to let her be and assures him that things will return to normal.

When Léonce prepares to travel to New York City on business, he sends the boys to his mother and leaves Edna alone at home for an extended period. This gives Edna physical and emotional room to breathe and think over various aspects of her life. While her husband is still away, she moves out of her house and into a small bungalow nearby and begins dallying with Alcée Arobin, a persistent suitor with a reputation for being free with his affections. For the first time in the novel, Edna is shown as a sexual being, but the affair proves awkward and emotionally fraught.

"The Male Gaze" looks like it probably has some good research and if you can ignore moralizing and bias are and careful to question assumptions, you might find it interesting. Classroom discussions are likely to be unbearable, however.

True that. In the USSR, although women were elevated (were in the workforce and had access to education, welfare and contraception) they still knew their place in society as home givers and mothers. They and the Soviets despised the feminists like Sontag and Jane Fonda and Western Feminism especially from the US as degenerate.
