There's better out there but it isn't a terrible book. Adultery is a constant in literature and especially in modernism because it places the central agon of a work in a person's interior so you can draw out a lot of complex introspection from someone's inner conflicts.

Yes, adultery makes for great drama in books. But that's not the issue. Here, the issue is that the feminists' take on the main character's actions in "The Awakening" represent "rebellion" rather than irresponsibility and dereliction of parental duties.

From Wikipedia:

"One of the main issues that nineteenth century readers had with the novel was the idea of a woman abandoning her duties as a wife and mother. As this was so strictly reinforced as the main purpose of women’s lives, a character who rebels against these social norms shocked readers."

We're not talking about merely sleeping around here -- we're talking about leaving your kids. Feminists behave as if women are the only ones with responsibilities and obligations. If a male character had done the same thing in a classic novel, their entire take on this book would be "See, this is why we needed child support laws!" or "He should have been jailed!" not "yay rebellion!"

So the issue isn't adultery, it's why feminists feel the need to champion it while crying to the judge when men do the same. As Roissy said, feminism is about expanding women's sexual freedom while criminalizing men's. The feminist reading of this book is a good example of that in action.

Whether getting them into bed or selling them literature, you can play women like fiddles and get them to dispense like vending machines with the right input (thanks Trace, for the metaphor).

This shit's like mad-libs.

Quote:In the [time], [the protagonist and any accompaniment] spend(s) [the duration] in [location], an idyllic [description of location]. Away from [her normal, easy life where everything is provided for her], [protagonist] releases herself to her deepest yearnings, plunging into an illicit liaison that reawakens her long dormant desires, enflames her heart, and, eventually blinds her to all else.

Written nearly [some amount of time] ago, [novel] is the compelling story of an extraordinarily modern woman struggling against the contraints of [make-belief constraint #1] and [make-belief constraint #2], and slowly discovering the power of her own sexuality. [Protagonist]'s search for her own individuality touches the hearts of women who've learned the value of [vapid neologistic value #1] and [vapid neologistic value #2] and her story is now regarded as a classic in American fiction.

Let's try this with 50 Shades of Grey:

Quote:In the late noughties, Anastasia "Ana" Steele spends her college-years in Vancouver, Washington, an idyllic college town. Away from her hometown and the watchful eye of her parents, Ana releases herself to her deepest yearnings, plunging into an illicit liaison that reawakens her long dormant desires, enflames her heart, and, eventually blinds her to all else.

Written nearly two years ago, 50 Shades of Grey is the compelling story of an extraordinarily modern woman struggling against the contraints of societal slut-shaming and male sexual pressuring, and slowly discovering the power of her own sexuality. Ana's's search for her own individuality touches the hearts of women who've learned the value of coming-of-age and self-actualization and her story is now regarded as a classic in American fiction.

Reading this, I realize that American women are suffering from some kind of Ennui like condition where they will never be satisfied. This why they eat so much.

Women don't really want to be satiated. They crave the craving.

Andrew WK said it best- something along the lines "Women want to want."

This is the key to game.

You just keep dangling the toy in front of the cat but never let her get it all the way. Just a little taste here and there to wet the appetite, but never give the magic away.

Satisfaction is the enemy of pleasure.

What do you mean by the 'Left'? I'm what you would describe as a Communist and there is no way I would subscribe to this feminist claptrap. Reading the passage made me want to puke.

In my school we read Plato, Aristotle, Homer's Illiad, Machiavelli, St. Augustine, Kant, Voltaire and on the lighter side we had Shakespeare, Chaucer, Byron and Dickens among others. In my spare time I read Marx and Lenin. I went to a Catholic school and the clergymen instilled in us the virtues of the Greek and Roman classics as well as pointing out that learning Latin was a vital stage in the building blocks of learning a modern European language. I'm sorry I never took Latin, Greek or Hebrew courses that were offered.

Any one caught reading feminist rubbish from post 1960s was singled out for ridicule.

So you're an economic Marxist instead of a cultural one. The cultural Marxists are ruining the US. They're still on the Left.

True that. In the USSR, although women were elevated (were in the workforce and had access to education, welfare and contraception) they still knew their place in society as home givers and mothers. They and the Soviets despised the feminists like Sontag and Jane Fonda and Western Feminism especially from the US as degenerate.

Jim NortonFan is probably one of those extreme Right Wing, Republican Tea Party types who think that Obama is a 'communist'.

You could know for yourself if you read a few of my posts instead of trying to troll me.
