It's usually a foot in the door for the insane benefits you get as a public employee. If you are in college and want to go that route, get an unpaid internship with your favorite level of government, make connections, learn the hiring system and then work 20 hour weeks for the next 25 years.

Companies need to get rid of all these do-nothing middle managers. Then they would have money to pay interns.

Most public companies are, they don't give a shit about boosting the unemployment rate, only profits. Technology is even reducing the need for upper level managers with enhanced reporting and more detailed analytics. Scary world we live in, its not just the bottom rung getting the axe. I see highly trained and educated people getting the ax far too often. If I could find a way to start my own business I'd have done so already.
