An integral suppressor/barrel for the 10/22 takedown model. Ruger made a number of 10/22 rifles back in the day in a similar configuration under the designation AWC Ultra II.

I've always been interested in these because the anti-"silencer" part of our local gun legislation defines a suppressor as "a device designed to be attached to a gun to reduce the amount of noise it makes when fired".

However.

Technically speaking in all Australian states the barrel is taken to be "part of the gun" in a way the stock for example isn't since most guns could technically be used without a stock but not without a barrel.

So again, technically speaking anyone able to legally acquire a 10/22 could theoretically apply this barrel to it without breaking the anti-suppressor law.

I'm sure you'd end up in court one way or another and they'd yank your license "just because" but you'd be able to stand tall knowing that you were technically correct.

edit: Looks like you'd have to tac-weld all the removable bits in place for that to be legal.

If so, better to wait on a can until we know what's going on with the Hearing Protection Act, which would deregulate suppressors and ultimately lead to a sharp decline in suppressor prices. I'm not super hopeful, because congress is a bunch of fucking pussies and Scalise was shot (really conveniently) right before the SHARE act--which HPA is part of--was scheduled to be heard. But we'll see. They haven't even rescheduled the hearing and it's been several weeks, which is why I think congress is shitting the bed for the 9 millionth time.

I've entertained thoughts about getting a rifle (preferably something that's easy to find ammo for) and taking it to a range now and then, shouldn't be too hard even though my state isn't very gun-friendly. But it's low on my priority list behind making money, developing better discipline, and other things I've yet to sort out.

This book recommends that a .22 firearm would be quiet essential in SHTF type scenarios. Being in Canada, most of the guns in the book wont be available to me, but he praises the GSG brand of guns, which can be found here for ~$5-600 in the .22 LR variety.

He also doesnt recommend Soviet surplus type guns for these scenarios as their ammo wont be good quality and can corrode.

I plan go get my gun license the next month. At the moment I own a .22 bolt rifle. With the license I can own a semi auto and pistols.
Home defence is a legal reason to own a firearm.

My plan at the moment is to get a .223 bolt action rifle because I want a bigger one. And a semi auto in .223. For the bolt action rifle I consider the Mossberg MVP Patrol. In the Mossberg you can also put the AR-15 magazines.
So the choice for my semi auto is a rifle in .223 and where I can switch the magazines to the Mossberg.

As it seems an AR-15 type is the most common semi auto at the moment. But there are plenty of models out there.
What kind of semi auto alternative or what kind of AR-15 do you consider? I don't want to blow my budget and I see most stuff is in the 1.500 € to 2.000 € range. For the equipment I don't need much. I need a dot and something with a little scope for a longer distance.

I remember shooting the G-36 in the German Army. It was very smooth. It had a dot for close distance, a 2.5 scope dot and you could aim for longer distances till 800 m. All build in one scope.

Any recommendations?

The Mini 14 is not cheaper then an AR 15 and there are some issues with the classification. Hard to get a permit for the Mini 14.

I'm completely ignorant of European gun legislation so I can only offer advice in rifles from a tech perspective.

I'd rather have a G36 than any AR, but even if the G36 is legal in your country, it will certainly be much more expensive than an AR. Are Warsaw Pact military surplus firearms legal where you are? Rifles such as SKS, Mosin-Nagant 1891/30(bolt action), STV 40, and especially the Czech VZ 58 rifles are all quality and inexpensive. The Russian 7.62 x 39 and 7.62 x 54 ammo is also cheap. If any Kalashnikov family rifles are legal for you to buy, definitely think about getting a quality ex-DDR or Russian AKM or one of the newer AK 100 series rifles. The Swiss SG 550 is quality in .223, but it's also expensive. If it's legal, try a Kel Tec Su-16 (not expensive) or Robinson Arms XCR (more expensive than an AR).

They're very good. I've gotten to handle and shoot both the rifles produced for the Czech/Slovak militaries and the ones for the civilian market. Looks like an AK but it's superior engineering to an AK. Lightweight and accurate. A skilled rifleman would be able to easily engage targets at 300 meters plus, not so much with most AK platforms. Plus it only weighs about 5-6 pounds empty. If I got to pick and choose my equipment to carry for military service, I'd choose a VZ 58 for my main firearm.

The Czechs export a semi-auto only version called the CZ 858 to the Canadian civilian market. So there must be something similar for other markets.

If you're looking for home defense, get Taurus Judge. A rifle is not the best tool for home defense.

Not knowing your budget or uses for the rifle, but seeing that you are in Austria with her mountains and likely game that lives there, I would suggest LMT 308. LM308SS is what Brits adopted as the designated marksman rifle.
Shoots 308/7.68 NATO, and barrel change is is as easy as undoing two screws. Barrels come in all 308-based calibers--243, 260/6.5, 7-08, 338. You can customize the rifle for competition, hunting/varminting, plinking, whatnot.

Your plan for an MVP/AR15 combo is realistic and wise. A lot of gun buffs are .308 fanatics but the .223 is perfectly adequate unless you're planning on doing patrols in Afghanistan. Moreover I would rather be in a team with a guy that's run 10,000 rounds through his .223 than the guy who could only afford to do a third of that shooting due to ammo costs.

Ballistics matter but in the end, only hits count.

My experience with guns is commonality and proven reliability are king. This is why I still choose an older Glock pistol over the newer Sig no matter the hype.

Parts and aftermarket accessories become more expensive and increasingly difficult to find the newer/more-obscure a gun is.

What do the local cops use? What does the local military use? Go in that direction.

And @MOVSM: The Taurus Judge is a great gimmick but a rubbish gun for anything other than killing snakes.

In a house accuracy doesn't matter, and it's not unwieldy. The other guy can't grab it by the barrel. And it sends out 3-4 bullets.

Do you have one? I've tried one at the range and it's like trying to aim a 6pack of beer. I'm not sure of the rationale behind it as a self defence gun. If you don't mind that kind of recoil then a 10mm pistol can support a torch/laser combo, a decent holster, holds more rounds, is more accurate, has a better trigger and can be reloaded far more easily in stressful situation in a fraction of the time.

Valid points, but the ammunition improved quite a bit since the box-o-truth did their test. There's a bullet/slug shot with buckshot, and there are much more powerful 3" shells.

This is designed for a situation in a civilized country where 5 rounds are enough to repel an intruder, and where you are probably not invaded by a mongol horde. Consider, a proper 12ga combat shotgun has 6-8 rounds in the magazine.

In Germany and Austria you can only have Semi Auto.
Home defence: I don't expect an intruder in my home. Even if so, I have to look the gun in a safe or something that I have to open with a key. Also when I shoot someone who is in my house I will face legal consequences. Home defence is more a code word for SHTF scenario when I need something reliable. And something that I can bring to the shooting range regular.

Shotguns are also illegal.
