I wanted a scout ever since I started playing Counterstrike. The reality of the gun is this. It's designed (with that scope mounting) for an extremely limited kind of shooting. I don't remember where I heard that from.

I remember the scout for being "weak" because it could only kill with one round if you got a headshot. On the other hand being stuck with it on servers where they banned the "AUG" and the other rifles would hone your sniping headshot skills. The AUG was a one shot kill wonder.

Dammit all this reminiscing makes me want to fire up steam and start sucking at CS again! I was the one with 100 deaths and 15 kills.

The .22 really shines when you bring a suppressor into play. With good ammo and shot placement it will kill anything up to human size with barely a whisper. Beyond that you can use it to "send a message" that someone is not welcome in the immediate vicinity.

It's cheap practice as well, and if things get bad you can put it in your kid's hands while you pick up something a bit bigger.

If you want to figure out how much the gun will cost then compare the marlin in your country vs the the American rrp and then compare the American rrp on a 10/22 and scale it up appropriately.

Folding stocks are nice but for genuine portability you might want to consider a takedown model that splits easily into two pieces. A threaded barrel on a .22 is also an absolute necessity.



Of course when it come to portability you could just cut to the chase and buy a .22lr pistol.

Yesterday I took a handgun handling/safety class at my local range. I grew up in the suburbs in an extremely blue area of the US - it's the type of culture where people are typically afraid of guns and generally see them as murder weapons carried by black (and perhaps Hispanic) gangstas in the inner city.

It was $80 for 3hr and very worthwhile. 2 hours of classroom time followed by an hour on the range, firing 50 rounds with a Smith & Wesson M&P .22LR. The classroom time was spent learning basic safety principles, anatomy of handguns, how to load, unload, and clear a gun, basics of grip, aim, stance, and breathing. For the shooting we did 2 handed and 1 handed (left and right) and moved the targets from 15-25 ft. My grouping was good, but I was mostly off low and to the left which means I was moving my hand too much instead of just the trigger finger.

I highly recommend this to anyone who has a similar background to mine. The fear and demonization of firearms is really irrational and there's no better way to see how this is true by handling them in a safe situation with experienced professionals. The idea of someone being "anti-chainsaw" is absurd yet people are lauded for being anti-gun. I feel like I learned a lot; I really enjoyed it and I expect I'll go back to work on my marksmanship and try some larger calibers.

No country I know of has similar gun laws as those in the US. Hell, a significant portion of the US itself has crappy gun laws.

I suppose there are some countries where you can get some guns and carry them legally, but every one I've looked into had a ton of restrictions/barriers/expenses involved.

Switzerland and Czech republic have pretty good gun laws. In fact, I'd say they're better than California and new york.

Also France isn't actually that bad for getting a gun assuming you get a range membership. You can't carry it but its within the realm of possibility to get an AR.

In Asia, the Philippines I think have decent gun laws. It's a bit hard to info good info on them.

I'm not sure why anyone would want to.

To organise it would be expensive, time consuming and utterly pointless. The only trophy animals we have here are introduced species that would be better hunted on other continents.

I dunno, Australia is like Mother Nature's freaky test lab. I could see collecting all the weird animals for mounts. Some of the stuff you guys actually have is weirder than the hoax animals people come up with in the US.

Hunting for food (or mainly for sport) can get to be incredibly complicated and expensive depending on location. A large portion of my diet is fish and game that I have harvested for myself, but at this point I do it for reasons other than primarily food gathering. For example where I live (Pacific NW, U.SA.) it goes like this:

First you purchase your firearm, obviously price varies depending on what you need,want, and can afford. Last rifle I bought was a lower end Remington 778, that and the scope set me back about $400. Your firearm can be a big upfront cost but if you plan on hunting regularly, long term it becomes the most affordable piece of the whole situation.

Next, you must pay for the required documents/privileges and these vary by state. For those in my state it first requires the purchase of a hunting license which is around $35. This license basically gives you the privilege of applying to hunt. Big game tags are limited and distributed through a lottery system, you apply and maybe you get a tag maybe you don't. Each application comes with an $8 application fee. Generally speaking you want to apply for every tag possible to increase your odd of being able to hunt something. This year I applied for antlerless deer, Buck deer, elk, antelope, bighorn sheep, and mountain goat which cost me a total of $48. At this point you would be in for close to $90 disregarding the price of the rifle with no actual guarantee that you would be hunting. This might not seem too bad but keep in mind that it can take years to draw certain tags; antelope for example takes the average person 13 years to draw meaning that on average that person will pay a little over $100 in application fees before drawing a tag. So then if you actually draw a tag (this year I got Buck deer and elk) you must pay for it. Tag prices vary but they run about $35 each. This year (once again disregarding the cost of the rifle) I am in it for around $150. It's pretty easy to do the math and see that in a few short years you end up paying more in fees than you do for the rifle.

Now for the actual hunt itself you have extra costs, gas to drive, food to eat, ammo, etc,etc. These costs vary but can add up to a staggering amount, and you must keep in mind you may not even harvest an animal (I have only managed one deer in the last five years). If you do harvest an animal you must decide if you will pay to have it processed by a butcher or cut it up yourself. Butcher bills can be in the $100's depending on what cuts of meat you desire, but doing it yourself can get pricey if you don't own the necessary equipment.

My point is that depending on location (I have lived in States where hunting was considerably cheaper) hunting is not a way to get cheap, healthy meat. It is a way to get expensive, healthy meat if you get lucky. My advise to anyone new to hunting is find a mentor who is willing to show you the ropes before you start spending the money on what is essentially an expensive hobby that you may not even enjoy or have the time to dedicate to.

To plan a trip to Australia for the sole purpose of hunting might be all of those things, but to go hunting as a tourist, not at all. Any well repped, decent post count RVF member is welcome to come and hunt on my property for the time and expense it takes to write a PM.

Got a Remington R-25 GII (AR-10) for hunting big game and it comes with no muzzle apparatus and the fluting ends a couple inches from the end of the barrel so it can be machined and affixed with whatever kind of brake, compensator, suppressor, or hybrid device I want.

Anyone have any recommendations on what would be the best tool to put on the end of the barrel for hunting large game?

I'd just leave it as-is if it's a hunting gun.

You're already getting recoil reduction compared with a bolt action because it's semi-auto, a brake/comp would just be obnoxious, you don't need to worry about muzzle flash, and a suppressor would unwieldy in most situations and not that beneficial in any case, except to protect your hearing somewhat if you otherwise didn't have hearing protection. It's always cold when I hunt, so I just wear my electronic muffs all day.

Use the money for something else you need for hunting, IMO.
