The answer is (as always) that it depends.

Most arguments you hear against it come from three different camps:

Why wear that combo instead of a suit?

Why wear a jacket when you’re clearly going for comfort by throwing on jeans?

How are you doing it to actually make it look good?

So let’s dive in and approach the issue from all three angles.

Did he just copy everything off this thread?

I would rock this in the summer time if I was going shopping downtown or to an outdoor Sade concert or something.

Or, maybe walking through a casino in Vegas.

Reminds me, I need to go to Miami!

I like this. Again, if it was a casual event.

Except for the shoes, they look tacky and out of place to me.

So far that can pull it off:

1. Lapo - Billionaire fashion icon
2. Tom Ford - Fashion designer and fashion icon

Pretty short list.

Also, Tom Ford looked sharper in the signature black suit than he did in the blazer and jeans.

Ha, point taken G, just playing Devils advocate.

I think the moral of the story is that it not quite what you do with fashion, but how you do it. There are exceptions, but as we can see there are ways to make this look dope and ways to look like a complete jackass.

Suit jacket with jeans? No

Blazer or sport coat with jeans or chinos? Yes

Most every picture on here where the guy is wearing jeans, he is wearing either a sport coat or blazer.

The lines between blazer, suit jacket, and sport coat, which were traditionally distinct, are becoming less distinct nowadays, but so is the line between what is considered masculine and feminine in the mainstream media.

Coincidence?

Unless something REALLY catches your eye and it looks super slick, I say go with classic looks.

It comes down to swag. Clothes should fit the personality. Not every guy can step into a custom and pull it off. Nor jeans/blazer. There's no cookie cutter approach that will work for everyone.

And then there's venues. I love jeans/blazers, and custom suits. But do I wear either all the time? No. Walking around a small town in the South wearing either will get you nowhere. Sometimes just jeans and a tshirt is needed. There's a skill in staying one step ahead on what to wear over others, so you need to learn it, and your wardrobe has to be very diverse. But it's money well spent.

I don't know who this dude is? He is probably some famous fashion expert but I'm not liking this look. It looks like his legs got dressed to go re-organize his garage but his upper body got dressed to go to a health club singles mixer. I do like the jacket. But, the green mock turtle neck looks like the one my grandpa used to wear in the 1990's!

Ozwald Boateng.

I have been by his shop on Savile Row.

He looks sharper in a full Custom Suit than in a blazer and jeans:

That first suit is dope, would love to have that. He wore a similar one on the cover of GQ with a white shirt and thin, knit, black tie. Whether he looks better in the suit or not isn't really relevant though. A jacket and jeans is a look that if done appropriately can look very stylish.

I must say, Tanner broke it down brilliantly. That dude knows his stuff, big fan. Need to hit him up for a consultation.

Anyone notice how short these jackets are? Critical if you're going to do this with jeans. Most dudes mess the length issue up pretty bad. It's harder than it seems; I was guilty of this for long time before I finally figured it out...

Suit jackets are too well cut and formal to wear with jeans, they don't look right. 99% of the examples in photos of people doing that looks off.

However a sport's jacket is an entirely different beast and not cut in the same way as a formal suit jacket. Materials also are more flexible and colours too. They are usually cut shorter too which makes a difference to how it looks. A sports jacket and jeans is practically all I wear:

Jacket's sleeves too long. Is that a polo shirt underneath the pullover? Why have you covered the whole collar with the pullover?

Lets breakdown Vorkuta's look..

In my non-expert opinion, I would say that this look works because of how all the fabric and textures match. The denim jeans, wool sweater, wool jacket, and wool hat all seem to go together smoothly. And, it all fits properly.

I like the brown leather "man-bag", seriously, we have to carry stuff around also, much better then a backpack.

And, it's a shorter length "sportcoat", not a suit jacket. That's what I learned from this thread.

I heard Hungary is cool.

My only suggestion would have been to use a different color sweater, but the look is still good. I can't get away with wearing those hats. Props.
