Yes, I wanted to get his opinion on this whole "jeans" thing. There was a controversy at work about people wearing jeans. I voted "no jeans", most people didn't care. The cowboy is the boss and he said -- "no jeans on company time, this aint a ranch"

But, I admit, I'm biased, I don't like jeans. I think denim is a cheap looking material.

Denim isn't created equal. Have you ever wore a pair of raw selvedge (not salvaged) denim? Most people have no clue what good denim is, and those who thibk thest do believe it means 7 For All Mankind. It doesn't.

Check out the Self Edge store on SF and you will gain a whole new appreciation for denim.

+1. Also check out APC, Edwin, and Dior denim as well. You get unique fits and designs since the denim contours to your body and you can acheive some amazing designs after washing. You simply cannot knock denim if you haven't tried the raw(selvedge) variety.

If you don't know what you're doing, trying to pull off a look like this can go tragically wrong. Mixing clashing patterns/colors and pulling it off well is next-level fashion. I'm not on that level.

I like this look a lot. The suit with the waist coat is class and the Fedora just gives it a timeless cool look to it. My only gripe is the tie,I don't think it's the right shade of brown. Still,a classic head turning look overall.

Quick tip: never orphan a suit jacket. It either goes with the suit pants it belongs to or not at all. The fabric does not match well with jeans.

RE: Wearing a suit jacket or blazer with jeans
IMO the most important aspect of men's fashion are to be comfortable in what you're wearing (you won't catch me in skinny jeans). After that it's dressing to fit in, but at the same time make a personal statement. Where I live, most people when they go out where jeans or khakis/chinos in the warmer months. With the exception of certain places, I rarely see slacks and it's even more rare to see someone with a complete suit. If you wear a suit to a lot of places where I live; you will look nice, but out of place. Although you can look great with slacks and nice shirt, it just makes more sense to pair jeans with something semi-dressy where I'm from and I would imagine a lot of other places as well.

I think what makes the jeans and jacket/blazer combination look weird is fit. Most of the more awkward pics in the thread show guys wearing ill-fitting suit jackets. Even if you're bigger buy, to pull off the look your jacket should have a tailored look to it. Speaking of fit, it also looks downright sloppy if your jeans don't fit right (they are too long or "bunchy" looking).

Where is this?

Why do you want to "fit in".

G - great contributions to this thread. Here is how I have looked at things and would value your input.

First, I agree about about not wearing jeans with suit jackets but I do wear jeans with some blazers. I don't look it as dressing down, per se, but dressing up. Let me explain - let's say the typical male "going out uniform" in a major city is jeans and run of the mill striped long sleeve shirt. So instead of wearing only my nicer dark jeans with my thomas pink shirt, I put on the charcoal grey blazer over it to "dress it up" a touch. So is your view that I need to take it one step further and get some slacks instead of the jeans and swap out the collared shirt for the v-neck? (as you mentioned in a previous post?)

Or just take it one step further and "suit it up", a la a Tom Ford look?

Great questions.

I see your theory.

But I think this falls under the "tallest midget" theory of dressing.

However, like I have said a few times, I think people should wear what makes them feel good.

I would still argue though that the only times someone has posted a picture on here of sport coat and jeans, the person would have looked better in slacks.

Really Lapo was the only guy on the entire internet that we have seen that can pull it off.

Quote:Or just take it one step further and "suit it up", a la a Tom Ford look?

Tom Ford dresses smooth as hell.

It is strange because he is iconic for dressing how an Alpha Straight Male should dress. And he is gay.

Such is life these days.

Got it. To quote Tom Ford - "Just like girls need to learn to be comfortable in heels before they go out in them for the first time, a man should try wearing a suit throughout a normal day. I do most things in a suit—and sometimes even in a tuxedo—and so I’m really comfortable in one."

Time to go shopping.

Was looking around and saw some interesting combinations

I guess a cute dame under your arm always helps

Lapo again

Though as I stated before I believe a big difference in whether to wear a blazer jacket with jeans is dependent on being able to differentiate which fits best below

RE: Wearing a suit jacket or blazer with jeans
This is actually my go to look and I think I've perfected the recipe. The key is to keep it simple, this is how I do it:

1) Black blazer. I got mine at Zara. Fits great, was less than 200 bucks new. I get compliments all the time. I could go back and buy the matching pants any time I want for 80 and have a dope suit.

2) Dark wash blue jeans with no shine on them. Surprisingly hard to find. I splurged on mine and bought the AG Adriano Goldshmied matchbox style ones (that's his slim fit cut). His washes are superior, that's why his jeans are so expensive. Best blue jeans I've ever owned, totally worth the 165 bucks I paid for them. They're classy and edgy, you can dress em up or down depending on the circumstances. Don't go the true religion route with their cheap washes, unless you wanna look like Charlie below)

3)White slim fit dress shirt or gray slim fit dress shirt. I snagged a bunch of John Varvatos USA brand (that's the younger slightly more affordable line than his John Varvatos collection line, which costs an arm and a leg) on sale at bloomingdales for 40 bucks a piece. They're usually 100. I've noticed that bloomies will always blow these shirts out at least once a year. Look out for them at your local bloomies. They fit great, have a perfect semi-spread collar and launder great. Just iron em out and you're good to go.

4) Black or brown chukka boots. I prefer chukkas, but any loafer, boot, dress shoe you like will do. I bought mine at Aldo for 75 bucks on sale. Keep the style simple. Go with a rounded toe for a classic, masculine look. Square toes and pointy ones look like monkey shoes on me, but to each his own.

This is how to do it right (although I'd still go darker with the jeans):

This is how to do it wrong :

Just a heads up that Tanner just posted up about this issue:

http://masculine-style.com/a-jacket-and-jeans/

Quote:Of all the styles a man can choose, this is the one I see getting the most discussion. Most of it comes from a pretty simple question. ” Is it appropriate to wear a suit jacket with jeans.”

The answer is (as always) that it depends.

Most arguments you hear against it come from three different camps:

Why wear that combo instead of a suit?

Why wear a jacket when you’re clearly going for comfort by throwing on jeans?

How are you doing it to actually make it look good?

So let’s dive in and approach the issue from all three angles.

Yeah, but lets be fair; Torino is a pretty sleepy town and you just can't cop your rocks anywhere- let alone speedballs (no Ferrari jokes). I'm sure ol' boy could have arranged time with 24 year old Dolce and Gabbana-looking transsexuals if he were so inclined. At any rate, Lapo more than made up for it by directly changing the course of an NBA game... not knowing the rules and knocking a ball out of bounds in a 4 point contest. No jacket, though.

Cool.

Who is that guy?

Is he a member of the forum?

He obviously read this thread, he posted two pictures I put up.

He might be the second guy we have see that can pull it.

So far that can pull it off:

1. Lapo - Billionaire fashion icon
2. Tom Ford - Fashion designer and fashion icon

Pretty short list.

Also, Tom Ford looked sharper in the signature black suit than he did in the blazer and jeans.

I'd be more interested to know, why would one choose jeans at the first place? After getting my first pair of dress slacks I only wear jeans out +2 <>-2 weather, since everything is muddy as hell.

Dress slacks are more comfortable, stylish and look so much better.

It's funny that you found that picture of Tom Ford, years ago I watched an interview with him and that's who I initially got the look from. I was like, that's how you look casual but serious at the same time.

He may be gay, but he can still teach straight guys a thing or two about how to look right.
