I somehow missed the lightbulb disscussion when it came up.
When incandescent light bulbs were banned here a while back, I had intended to go and buy a lifetime supply from an electrical wholsaler that I knew had them in boxes of 100 but I never got around to it.
Not that it would have mattered, they'd worked out the secret to giving them a pre-determined lifespan by then anyway. I'm going to tell you a true story...
My Aunt's house was built in the 30s or 40s. She bought it in 1971.
I remember her telling me about the light bulb in one room of her house which had never been changed since she had lived there, while the rest had blown countless times. She was convinced that the quality of bulbs had steadily declined over the years, that the modern ones were even worse, that it was a scam and that one light bulb was proof.
When she died a few years ago and I was cleaning out her house, the very last treasured possession I took home was that light bulb.
I still have it in my house today, and that bulb which is at least 46 years old is still working perfectly right now.
The Centennial Light is the world's longest-lasting light bulb, burning since 1901. It is at 4550 East Avenue, Livermore, California, and maintained by the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department.[1] Due to its longevity, the bulb has been noted by The Guinness Book of World Records,[2] Ripley's Believe It or Not!, and General Electric.[3] It is often cited as evidence for the existence of planned obsolescence in later-produced light bulbs.[4]

You can buy LED bulbs now that will, allegedly, last for a long time. However, they are very expensive. I just bought a dozen or so and spent well over $100.
I asked my grandfather that day if he thought there was a nefarious planned obsolescence with modern bulbs. He thought it was more so that newer bulbs are not built nearly as tough or expensively as older bulbs. He said that if they made older bulbs like that today the cost would be nonsensical.
I also want to point out that the Centennial bulb has long lost its ability to provide useful illumination. Last I read it was as strong as a nightlight.

Not to derail this thread of the lovely topic of venting about shit that pisses us off, this is actually pretty damn interesting from a Capitalism aspect:
There was some sort of "cartel" or inner circle union of industry tycoons who decided to make products that would deliberately fail after a given amount of time to generate continuous business.
This is something I've always known about but never read into the history of it.
I hate that I can't turn off these motherfucking "popular highlights" in my Android kindle app. Oh, it says I can. There are instructions on the internet telling how to do it. But when I actually go into the settings menu, the option isn't fucking there.
I don't give a good god damn what a bunch of window lickers thought was worth highlighting in a book. I don't like the distracting fucking clutter and I want it to go away. But because whoever coded this app was a window licker par excellence himself, he left the option out of the UI.
And along the way, bad UI design in general makes me want to choke developers. Humans have to use this shit and humans aren't mind readers, for fuck's sake. Learn your goddamn craft! UI is a well developed field, you shouldn't just make shit up because you're too lazy to crack open a book on the subject. Thinking you don't need to bother standing on the shoulders of those who came before you is how you end up with shit like this:
Whoever wrote this app can go fuck himself with a rusty fence post.
...
Also, I just figured out how to do what I wanted. Huzzah!
My rant above still stands. The option should absolutely not default to "on", I should be able to turn it off from within the open book itself, and there's no excuse for the shitty non-intuitive multiple menu system that fails to properly separate concerns. It's not Mass Effect UI bad but it does suck. 4/10, would start looking for excuses to fire the designer.
If you ever wanted a daily example of women and their solipsism, look no further than a woman driving a vehicle.
We all deal with their idiocy on the roads, but yesterday I was almost ran over coming out of the gym walking back to my car.
I was pretty visible, she was not on her phone...she was just lost in her own world. She didn't even slow down or attempt to stop to let me cross in front of her. No acknowledgement, no "I'm sorry, I didn't see you" type of wave. Nothing. Stone Cold. She would have hit me and dragged my body for miles without a second thought.
My sister-in-law once said that she gets in her car and then kinda spaces out and next thing she knows she is at her destination. Unbelievable.
I hate those shitty little vaccum cleaners that don't use bags. You know the type; the ones that all the shit gets sucked up into a little compartment, and then when you clean it, that part pops out and you're supposed to tap-tap-tap it on something to get rid of the soot and dust?
WHERE THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO DO THAT, ASSHOLES!?
That dust and shit gets EVERYWHERE the second I open it!
I hate certain family members of mine trying to impose their own political beliefs onto me. I get it; you watch Richard(Rachel) Maddow, you like CNN, you think that anything more right leaning than huffpo is fake news, and you think Trump is Hitler. But honestly:
So do us all a favor, and just shut the fuck up! Real Talk.
For calling a creepy homosexual militant a "poof".
WTF.
Last time it was for telling a Muslim fanatic immigrant to go home to his own country.
It really IS photonegative fascism in Britain.
I also read that my football "club" (now a "soccer brand" but once a proud working class non profitmaking organisation owned by the fans) officially blames homelessness on "homophobia" in large part.
Just scum. I'm ashamed to be British when this shit gets peddled.
I'm guessing this is also the angry rant thread also.
I'll play your game.
I fucking hate people who ride ass on the highway.what the fuck is wrong with you people ?!?!?
Also I fucking hate GROWN men that are not able to look me in the fucking eye when I speak to you or walk past you.whats so hard about that? It pisses me off and it also tells me you can't be trusted. Following that ,I hate it when I can't get a straight answer from a grown man.especially that's a decade plus older than me .i expect you to be able to look me in the eye and give a a yes ,no whatever the fuck. Fuck "not trying to hurt feelings" ,no one has time for that shit.

I can't stand the Trump= Hitler comparison any more. It always comes up on poker nights with poker friends when we play a game called "Hitler" where you get 3 cards and 9's are wild. Until he starts banning the other political parties, puts badges on people and sends them off to camps, SHUT THE FUCK UP! Then again, their politics is pretty much "Fuck Republicans in the ass!" since they're mostly left-leaning independents and libertarians.
I hate how some places vote the exact same way for decades and there is no decent opposition or a change in hands. Where I live in Buffalo, NY, Democrats have had the mayor's office since the 1960's and it looks like the current mayor will win again.
I hate how internet research on products is getting harder and harder. Every fucking search I do is dominated by obviously paid sites and shills, and often quality products who don't take part in these aggressive "marketing" routines are buried dozens of pages back.

The weather is ok here, it got warm to 50 degrees. The city is OK, there are some new improved parts and some not so much. A reporter from another news station or paper saw that not everyone is benefiting from Buffalo's "renaissance" and reported it. Mayor Urkel (seriously, he looks like a grown-up Steve Urkel) had a hissy fit and then put up stats to make himself look good.
Not to mention they got food trucks just here a few years ago when cities have been having them for a while. My friends in the city pretty much said Buffalo is a good decade behind the rest of the major cities in the country. It might take a generation for Buffalo to be great again.
The local politicians are trying to see which industries can make the place great.

I hate that I break eye contact while in conversation, but even worse, I hate why: because the people I'm talking to can't focus their thoughts and communicate effectively and efficiently, or I'm having to hit the brakes on my own thoughts so they can keep up.
I also hate the avoiding eye contact when passing. But I think it's less of a problem to seem cold and aloof than to stare all googly-eyed and have the other person think/realize you're a psychopathic loon. (The Germans I used to work with would address this by habitually bellowing "Mahlzeit!!" at each other when passing in the hall. Which is funny, unless you're not a German, in which case it's worse than the googly-eye psychopath stare.)

If I need advice on proper use of the language in future I'll be sure to axe you.

I was rear-ended last fall by a distracted woman driver, naturally. Didn't notice her tailgating me (and that's of course a failing of mine), and as I slowed down she went full speed into the back.
We weren't hurt, but the car ended up being a total loss. It was less than a year old.
It hurt a lot seeing her disassembled at the body shop, on the way to be scrapped. You were a good ship, gone long before your time. I'm so sorry...
...that BITCH did this to you!

People who tailgate you in the rightmost lane because they have an exit coming up in 7 miles and want to do 85 mph straight to it, but won't pass you like a normal person because too lazy/lack confidence/think it's impossible to get a speeding ticket in the rightmost lane.
People who, instead of speeding up on a highway on-ramp to successfully merge into moderate traffic, instead slow down to 25 mph and try to turn onto the highway like they're turning out of the grocery store. Good work, get us all killed idiots
I hate cancer-trolls on social media who scour the web looking for some whack article that says, say, some nobody researcher somewhere has determined diet soft drinks or e-cigarettes or processed wheat or too frequent masturbation definitely 100% cause cancer and treat it like this is God's truth, even though hundreds or thousands of other studies have been done and never shown anything conclusive.

Where are you buying them? I picked up a two-pack of 100 watt equivalent LED bulbs at a discount retailer near me for about $5. 4 foot LED fluorescent tube replacement is about $8 at Target.
The tube was GE, it's possible that the bulbs aren't very good quality and won't last, but so far I've been impressed with them. The light is very warm-looking and not harsh, once they're under a shade I can't distinguish the output from an incandescent.
I don't get why anyone would long after incandescent bulbs. Fragile, hot, wasteful, burn out constantly. I won't miss them.
(02-17-2017 08:55 PM)ShotgunUppercuts Wrote: I fucking hate people who ride ass on the highway.what the fuck is wrong with you people ?!?!?
Totally agree. Why do people do this? If you want to go faster it's not hard to switch lanes, and this stupid behavior just increases the chances of an accident. Totally pointless.
Somewhat related, I hate how half the cars on the highway have their high beams turned on all the damn time. I never saw this before I came back from Japan about three years ago (after moving there in 2011.) Driving a relatively low car, it's really infuriating, but probably annoying even to people in trucks or SUVs. The fact that half of cars on the road have those awful LED lights that are brighter than the fricking sun just makes it worse. Drivers have no courtesy anymore.
Working for women, if they are having a bad day, you are having a bad day and thats just tough shit.
You just never know what the fuck you are walking into every day.
I always got on grand with my male bosses and co workers, I just dont seem to gel well with women in positions of authority or in the workplace in general.
Its always a bloody minefield, I should have done a trade instead of a degree.
