Should i do G's version of 100 push ups (and pull ups etc) and then do convict conditioning after I've gotten to 100 pushups etc, or should I do convict conditioning from the get go?

Just doing them inbetween sets is useful. It is easy to get there if you are doing little and often. Pressups are also very good for posture.

RE: hundredpushups
Started 3 Weeks ago, started with Week 3 of the program since I did over 21 reps on the diagnostic test.

I failed, so I started back at week 2.

Now, just finished week 3. What I wasn't able to do at first, now
I can do. On to week 4!

Pro tip: Drink water before and between sets

RE: hundredpushups
For amusement: last year I did the hundredpushups.com program and did 50 in a minute for a fitness test; this year all I did was several days of "100 pushups in whatever sets feel good" (so 5x20, 4x25, 3x30+10, whatever) and never once went to failure; got 55 in a minute (not a stunner, but not bad for a 40+ dude). So for reps, I'm a fan of never going to failure; this seemed to work much better and was a good deal more enjoyable.

You will get a bit of definition in your arms, chest, and shoulders as well as a tighter core. It is not a supplement for a full body routine like squats, deadlifts, and pullups would be but you will notice a difference. It requires a lot of muscular endurance which will give you a toned look. Big guys that can rep 225 easily would not be able to crank out 100 pushups. That being said, I'd still rather be able to rep 225x10 than do 100 pushups.

I look a lot more toned than big after completing this program, but I don't have access to a bench so this is the next best thing. I'm doing the entire program again with diamond pushups.

RE: hundredpushups
I am now at 95 consecutive push ups and 45 one armed push ups. This is my method:

day
1. used 90% every 3 hours.
2. used 90% every 3 hours
3. used 90% every 3 hours

make 3 days break and repeat

for example my last 3 days had these max stats:

day
1. 65
2. 75
3. 95
----
and after finishing the pushups for the day I make the one armed push ups. I don´t know why but it works great.

I am using the same method for bodyweight squats too.

This is the only way I do them now. Most I've ever gotten was 40

RE: hundredpushups
I have done this program twice. The first time i wasnt very consistent and couldnt go past week 4. Then I started respecting the rest time limits and thats when I really got better.

Got to 100 around the end of week 5, then left it for a while, and just now im starting over again.

Benefits have been a bir more of definition and endurance. I did not notice any big gains in size, but then gain its not a "get big" challenge, its a "lets do 100 pushups in a row" challenge.

RE: hundredpushups
I don't believe for one second that you can't get big from bodyweight exercises. It's really all in how hard the effort is.

Doing pushups shouldn't take more than about what, 1 second each? So one set of 60 pushups is one minute. You can't expect much growth from doing literally one minute's worth of exercise. Do 5 sets, for a total of 5 minutes = 300 pushups. Or do 10 sets. If you're really pushing your body hard, you'll grow quite a bit, I'm sure.
If you can do those, try different, harder ones. Clap your hands. That takes a lot of power to get off the ground long enough to clap. Tell me you can't grow by doing 300 or 400 of these a day. Right. Do one-armed pushups. Same with any other bodyweight exercise. Use your body's leverage to make things harder. Try doing a planche pushup or a front lever.

Will you get Arnold big? Doubt it. But who is really aiming that high? It's strange that guys who have never worked out will pay $100 a month for a gym when they could do exercises for free that will give them a great body that girls love a lot more than Arnold's.

Gymnasts have awesome bodies by doing super high reps. That goes against the common gym philosophy that high reps can't get you big. Cyclists who have never been to the gym have huge legs by doing thousands and thousands of 'reps' on their bicycles. I'm absolutely convinced that you can get plenty big doing stuff that requires your muscles to work hard. Jogging, no. Jogging doesn't require your muscles to push hard.

And even if you are a low-rep advocate, you can't argue that someone who can't even do 20 pushups needs to work out with weights. LOL

RE: hundredpushups
100 pushups is a noble goal, but if your max is more than 10-15 pushups with good form (without increasing resistance with weights / elastics etc), you're going to be building more endurance than absolute strength / explosiveness, and size.

You can increase your endurance by doing more reps of an easy exercise (mainly slow twitch fibers) or by doing harder exercises to increase your absolute strength (building fast twitch fibers). Building your endurance doesn't increase your absolute strength as much.

If you're traveling, have no access to equipment, you can still change up your workouts so you're building strength and explosiveness. As an approximate rule of thumb, you should be doing exercises where you can't do more than 10 reps - this way you're building absolute strength, rather than endurance.

Try the following progression; if you can do 10 or more reps, make it more challenging:

Regular pushups (hands ~ shoulder level) --> move hands lower toward belt and outwards (think similar to dumbbell flies) - you reduce the leverage to make them more challenging. You'll need to turn your hands outward with your arms
Same thing for diamond pushups - start with hands at shoulder level, move downwards toward belt

The book Building the Gymnastic Bodies is a fantastic book on body weight exercises, including push-ups. Of course, I do not condone illegally downloading the book regardless of how easy it is to find as a PDF - find it at http://www.gymnasticbodies.com/

This.

I incorporated Coach Sommer's wrist exercises for the beginning of workouts and I can't recommend it enough

It's so easy to create imbalances only focusing on certain movements where you end up losing mobility or creating needless injuries.

Here's one that should be obvious but always surprises people when I show them:

Today I did 101 push ups. The last time I had this high number it was some 20 years ago. It took me quite some time to reach this goal. I am 40 years old and 70 kg. Nice feeling.

100 dip
100 squat

Another one is 5 chin up , 10 push up,15 squat = 1 round . You have to do the more round in 20 minutes .
The first time I did 24 round, the second time I did 30 .

I think a log training thread would be interesting .

This coupled with a mile run or half mile swim is an ideal workout. Include an occasional low rep heavy weight bench press.
