Mike could you suggest a smoothie/juice that could help redress the balance, or just go with anything green and it's good?

You need to get more alkaline.

A lot of guys like the Kale Shake.

Getting more greens (the dude's recipe is good) should help reduce the acid reflux.

There's a lot of bro science when it comes to ph and it's hard to quantify or study with consistent results. Myself, I prescribe to the theory that the more calorie-dense food you consume, the more acidic your digestive tract must be to process that food, which is a potential issue with lifters or active people that need a lot of calories.

Your instincts are right.

What some call "bro science," I call "first hand experience."

People say that alkaline-acidity is a myth and that your body will balance its ph.

I say, "Go on a 3 day juice fast. Tell me if your body feels less 'hot' and 'acidic.'" Every time, it will.

Greens just make the body feel different. That might be not quantifiable in a lab but it's verifiable by anyone who juices greens.

There are a lot of sick, unhealthy doctors and "scientists" out there who think the know something about nutrition.

If they know so much, why do they look like shit, feel like shit, have low energy, and look their age rather than look several years younger (as I do)?

RE: Health: Juicing
Reminds me of the last doctor I went to (I'm not going back).

It was my first time with him since my employer changed health insurance plans. It was a full physical. He asked me,

"Do you exercise?"
"Yup"
"What do you do?"
"Lift and stretch"
"No cardio?"
"No"
"Why?"
"It's useless to me"
"But you need to get your heart rate up."

I just started laughing right then and there and stopped answering him. Clearly the guy has never done a squat or deadlift in his entire life, never had that pounding in his chest and felt his whole body on fire from a heavy lift. The fact that he could ever think that lifting doesn't get your heart rate up was about the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

"...so I gave her an STD, and she STILL wanted to bang me."

I don't own a juicer, only a low quality blender I clearly need to upgrade. However, I think someone here with a juicer and a strong stomach should volunteer and do an experiment with drinking large amounts of pure onion juice, and report back.

Check out this article:

Quote: Think of a dirt-cheap vegetable you can buy at every greengrocers and supermarket. Put it in a juicer, give the juice to rats for three weeks, and watch their testosterone level rise by 314 percent. According to research done at Tabriz University in Iran, fresh onion juice raises testosterone levels as much as substances like nolvadex or clomid.

Who knows, raw onion juice could be the next zinc or ACV...

If only you knew how bad things really are.

Thanks for sharing this. I like to experiment with health stuff and I love onions. Going to do this for at least a week, separate from my typical celery/apple/carrot/ginger juicing. I'll report back.

I calculated it out and I need to drink almost 8 ounces of onion juice a day to match the 1g per kilo given to rats. Instead of my armpits smelling like raw onions after working out, hopefully I can walk around all day smelling like grizzled old guys who smell like raw onions.

I'm a man of action. Juiced 3 pounds of yellow onions. Got around 24 ounces of juice from it. Day 1 complete... downed 8 ounces. Didn't have a problem drinking it.

I think it's working. I benched 600 pounds and beat up 7 guys already. Smile

Just made a decent shake using my Vitamix: 1 large red onion, 2 bananas, 2 whole limes, 2 oranges, and 2 kiwis. I'd have to say, it tastes pretty good.

RE: Health: Juicing
I messed up the onion juice conversion... I calculated 1 gram per pound instead of per kilo of bodyweight. I only need to drink 3.5 ounces.

edit: Doing more research on this and reading about the HED (human equivalency dose). http://www.longecity.org/forum/topic/183...l-studies/

Puts a damper on things since it's not a straight conversion. I'd need way more than 3.5 ounces to get the equivalent of 1g per kilo for rats.

I think I'll just do 4-6 ounces a day to see what happens. Not like I was expecting a 300% TEST increase anyway. Just want to notice a positive difference.

Hmmm...reading that it looks like the formula actually reduces the amount you would need (?) Unless I'm mistaken. Rat Km is 6 and adult human Km is 37.

It seems to say you take the rat dosage (1g/kg) and multiply it by 6/37 (0.16) to get the HED. Then multiply the HED by your weight in kilos for your personal dose.

For a 100kg human this would be 16g which isn't that much.

Blending up nothing but watermelon with a little water is killer. Great for the summer, the lycopene helps prevent sunburn.

Feel free to throw in any other fruits. Watermelon Papaya Strawberry Banana whatever.

You're right... and that's what I thought (and it looks like). But I was reading elsewhere where we're wrong, somehow. I gave up trying to figure it out and I'm just drinking 4 ounces a day. Even though our math is correct, I think we're wrong because 16g (.56 ounces) of onion juice is nothing and I'm sure I already eat somewhere near the equivalent of that with my eggs each day and I don't feel like I'm dripping with testosterone from it.

I did the conversion a while ago and came up with 3.5 ounces. Thought, "No problem."

Thought it'd be easy. I was OK the first two days and then vomited it out thereafter.

I could drink the juice with ease. It just wouldn't stay down.

If your stomachs can hold it down, it'll be interesting to see what happens.

I got my replacement blender in the mail. I've started juicing again.

1 bunch of kale
3 carrots
3 stalks of celery
3 cucumbers

Is there anything else I should add to my main drink? I think I have a decent amount of greens in there. (I eat fruits separately or blend up frozen berries w/my protein shake).

Maybe some tomato or cauliflower to add variety to the amount of nutrients.

Good to know, and thanks for trying... BTW Mike, about how much raw onion would you say it takes to get 3.5 oz of juice? I'm thinking maybe it could be blended with some tomato juice or something similar to make it less harsh.

How much juice depends on your juicer. I got 1 ounce for every 2 ounces in weight using a Hamilton Beach juicer. Onions are about 85-90% water so a masticating juicer would get more juice out. If you want an easier way to get some onion juice, pour 3-4 ounces of it in a soup.

Are there significant health benefits to using a juicer (say Omega) vs. blending the exact same fruits and vegetables in a Vitamix?

For instance, I blend this every morning, would I be healthier juicing it?

1 1/2 cups water
1/2 head organic romaine lettuce
2 stalks organic celery
small bunch of spinach
1/2 organic apple, cored and chopped
1/2 organic pear, cored and chopped
1/2 organic banana

Keep in mind that we are on the Internet, so guys will ferociously debate this stuff.

But in my view, juicing or blending (or both) is great:

Juicing or Blending?

I have a high speed blender (BlendTec) and an Omega juicer. I do smoothies and juice.

Juicing is a good because you absorb more nutrients. It also gives you digestive system a break.

But...blending is great, too.

I don't think one is better than the other.

Bit the bullet and bought a Hamilton Big Mouth juicer (though it's not the 67650, it's like the 67605 or something). It should be here Wednesday since Monday is labor day.

I'm not a huge fan of eating salads and raw vegetables. Is it possible to just drink any and all salad vegetables that should otherwise be eaten? Is there anything that shouldn't be juiced?

One thing that I want to try calibrating and making is a mega testosterone booster juice that has all kinds of anti-estrogens (celery and broccoli supposedly have these) along with t-boosters (pomegranate and onion) and see if my voice will drop an octave or if my beard grows thicker. That would be cool.

From what I understand there is no problem with juicing vegetables. However juicing fruits is not a good idea. It will spike your system with sugar. The fiber in the fruit prevents this from happening.

I could definitely tell the difference when I was juicing fruits. You can feel the spike.

So I tend to keep with juicing vegetables. Fruits I blend with Nutri-bullet. Thought I'm sure any quality blender will do the trick.

My favourite is:

Organic Baby Spinach
Blueberries
Bit of cinnamon
Couple tablespoons of peanut butter.
The rest either milk or nut milk(almonds and/or walnuts)
