RE: Review of Medellin, Colombia
If you are staying for more than a few weeks, then I don't see why things have to be different. Like I've said before, you have some advantages because of being foreign, but some downside to it. Getting one night stands playa style is not the norm, but it's not impossible. In my opinion, if you have tight game and you sell yourself as somebody with a lot of value, there's no reason why an American can't date a 9+ in Medellin from the wealthiest families.

Btw, the no-gringo rule is half true. Most places in Barrio Colombia and in Rio Sur won't let you fly solo and try pickup inside. There's even a chance they bounce me out too, but it's less if I speak to them. If you are foreign, there's no argument, they say no and it's over. But if you come with a girl already, it's all open doors.

What is the half truth?

I have seen gringos get kicked out of Chipichape Mall for cold approaching women....does that mean some malls have a no gringo rule?
I never cold approach a woman here that I can't make eye contact with.

In Cali there are clubs where you can't get in without women....the truth is they are doing you a favor....absolutely no point in going to some clubs without women....takes women to play the game....only way to pick up women is with a woman.

A mall? They approached in a mall? They were asking for it, nobody goes out for girls in malls here. They did it out of safety. Not saying they are criminals, but it meets the profile of a "Fletero", somebody who approaches people after they go out of the bank and drug them to get the money. Malls are known in this city to be the safest place to get money out of the ATM and to do such movements. If any person starts approaching people in a mall for no apparent reason, the first thing security assumes is that you are some kind of con-man, or at worst a Fletero with Escopolamina in a bag.

RE: Review of Medellin, Colombia
solo & Volk both bring up good points. My "Medellín Reality" certainly wouldn't apply to everyone, I suppose. I lived in Colombia 3 years, speak solid Spanish, and it's not unusual for me to drop a grip of cash going out. I also had a decent social network to bounce around in.

I think the club thing goes in lots of places and isn't exclusive to any city. There a clubs in the states that hold single guys at the door while they're trying to raise the ratio of females to males.

Luckily, I haven't been kicked out of a mall (yet) for trying to pull ass, but there's always the next vacation. lol!

WEDO, as well, tapped a good observation. Even the chicks that say they will only date such & such can get rolled up by the right dude.

RE: Review of Medellin, Colombia
From what I've heard and seen it's not about them not letting gringos into clubs as much as it is not letting gringos into clubs without girls. I went to a spot in Las Palmas that told us we couldn't come in because we were two guys. A buddy of mine also said that the owners of some clubs didn't like gringos coming in and swooping the women, but if you show up with your own it's all good. And if you were to show up with your own, plus some extras, you'll be welcome with open arms.

I'm gonna give ya'll another update soon, just a little late now, about time for bed. That last couple days have been some what interesting.

RE: Review of Medellin, Colombia
OK, a brief update on Colombia. Where do I start??

So Saturday, I call the real good looking girls back. I had a hell of a time talking to my girl in Spanish over the phone, so she passes the phone to her friend who speaks English. Now I know how it is to be on the other end of that call, cause I could hardly tell anything of what the English speaking girl was saying to me because of her accent. What I got out of it was they were staying in Envigado. Apparently my room mate talked to her the same night and the girls where in Lleras, wanting to meet up. I didn't get that out of the conversation, so whether she was bull shitting me or not, I'm still not sure. Meanwhile, the first girl I banged while I was out here is calling (twice), and I avoid her calls until I find out what's up from the other girls. Once I assume the two better ones are flaking, I fall back to plan B. I call the girl I originally banged back, we'll call her CG1, and set up a date for the night.

I assume the upscale Colombian girls are flaking (We'll call CGs2) so I set up the night accordingly. I tell CG1 to come over at 9:30. Well, about an hour after I tell CG1 to come over, CGs2 send me a text, inviting me to this spot by Rio Negro. At this point, I already had written them off as flakes, so I decided I would stick with the original plan of going with CG1 to the metro cable on sunday, so I tell them I'm busy.

CG1 comes over. I end up taking her out to dinner and having a couple drinks with a friend of mine and a friend of hers. This was a little tough because her friend didn't speak english and my friend didn't speak Spanish. She had been trying to get me to go out on a double date all week so I agreed. Well, our friends date didn't get along so well, but I thought, "my bad dude, we'll send her home, go have fun, and I'll take CG1 back to my spot." So I tell CG1 that I'm tired, let's go home in an hour (This is about 12:40). She agrees. About 5 minutes later while we're walking to the next spot she stops me and says,

"When you go home, I think I'm gonna go hang out with my cousin."

I respond, "Oh really? You're gonna go with your cousin?"

She asks, "Are you mad at me?"

I say, "You come and eat and drink with me, I pay for everything, and now you want to go hang out with your cousin?"

"You know this is my only day off where I don't have to work in the morning. I thought you wanted to stay out late tonight."

I remind her, "Look, I'm tired, I want to go back home. You live here, you can hang out with your cousin or go out any other Saturday, I have one week left in town."

CG1 "But tomorrow instead of going to the metro cable, we can spend all day together doing whatever we want together, you want to do that?"

"I don't think so, so you gonna leave?"

CG1 "Yes, but do you still want to hang out with me?"

I reply, "We'll see."

I give her a kiss and the cheek and tell her by. She replies, "That's all you're gonna give me? A kiss on the cheek?!"

"Yep, chao chao!"

That's the last I saw of her. My buddy said he saw her later that night and she was on his dick. Of course she was, she was pissed I held my ground and wanted to try and make me jealous. The next day the girl post pictures of me and her on facebook.... Unfriended.

I realize now I should have just gone with CGs2, but flaking wasn't the worst thing either. I decide the next morning to text them and invite them to a pizza party the old room mates friend is throwing. After I invited them, I realize all the room mates friends are old pervs and that the only girls they have are whores and pre pagos, which these high class girls will know what is going on right away and think they are scum. At first I decide we should tell the girls the party is canceled. I discuss it with both my room mates, since the one is going out with my girls friend and the other is the one who invited us to the party. But the old man tells me it will be cool and there won't be any hoes, just the gringos with their "real girls." So I decide fuck it, if it's a bad scene we'll eat pizza and bounce out. I was surprised, everything went well, and there really were no hookers there, and we ended up being the last at the party with our girls, plus we chose a table in a some what secluded area from all the old pervs (It was a great location btw in the middle of Lleras on a second floor patio, which we had exclusively rented for just our party, we looked like ballers). We ended up staying a good 2 hours after. The music was loud and it was hard to talk to my girl. Things didn't seem to flow as well as the night before, but still, my girl gave me signs of interest (For example, the roomate asked her where she wanted to go in the world, she knew I was going to Ecuador next week and said Ecuador is one of the spots she wants to most visit. If you have met anyone from Colombia, especially a high class girl, they almost laugh when you tell them they are going to Ecuador).

My room mate on the other hand was doing a great job of blowing it with his girl. At one point he was getting too touchy feely before building intimacy, which he knows nothing about, and his girl said to not touch her so much. My girl turned to me and said, "I think your friend is mad because my friend just told him not to get so close." I told her, "Nah, it's all good, I don't think he's mad." After that he sends me a message saying, "Please stop talking to my girl, if you need a dictionary you can ask for my phone." He said this because I asked the girl a couple times how to say certain words in spanish because I couldn't relay what I was trying to tell my girl. That pissed me off. I was respectful and waited till there was a pause in the conversation and everything to ask. I find out later he text the old man room mate who was with us and said, "Please leave." I didn't find this out til the next day when he told me about it. We both decided the kid was a dick and had some insecurity issues, and i told him today how I felt about it. I told him he was blaming other people for his social awkwardness and that he needed to improve himself. When you're in an environment like that, its best to show you can hold a conversation rather than be jealous and try and be a introvert. Yes I agree the interaction would have been easier without the 5th wheel, but he went about it the wrong way. When I discussed it with him today, he said, "I never told the girl that." I told him, "I know you didn't, but regardless, the girl can sense your insecurity, even if you don't tell her." Dude is just a fucking herb any way you look at it. I agree, it could have been easier, but play the cards you are dealt. He argued, "But you guys were talking about American football and I couldn't join in on the conversation, i don't know anything about it, and you took over the conversation." I say, "Well, that was your chance to say, 'We don't play American football in europe, what's up with ______." If you don't know, ask questions, get involved with the conversation! It's not my fault you are socially awkward. Not like these girls know a damn thing about football either! I told him he was blaming other people for his short comings. He said something to the extent, "Well, if you were my friends I wouldn't have to compete with you." Which trust me, if you're my boy, I'm gonna try and make everything as easy as possible. But this fucking guy makes it impossible to make it easy. He is just so awkward! And after his dip shit comment, who wants to help him out anyways? I even told him that to his face!

Either way, I still think I have a good shot with my CGs2, but I need to set up a date without the herb room mate. I'm gonna try and make it happen tomorrow. I know his girl doesn't feel him, and seriously, he kills the vibe. Every 5 minutes his girl is looking over, making faces to my girl about how much of a weird o he is. Trust me, I'm not being a hater, wish you all could meet this dude.

Besides that, I played a poker tourney last night, I have to say, a lot of Colombians have no etiquite and have no idea how to play poker. They basically play off luck, when they loose they throw a fit. At my table, it seemed like it wasn't a problem to flip your cards over after you fold while the hand is still live, because it happened multiple times and no one said anything about it.

One more thing I wanted to point out... A good amount of gringos here are grade A herbs.... I've had over 5 occasions where another gringo has come up to me and said either him or his friend would like the girl I'm hanging out with's number (after I leave), and hasn't had more than a 5 minute conversation with her. At least half of the 6 people who asked didn't speak a word to them. Basically I guess they wanted to get the girls number and say, "Hey, I'm intlpalyboys friend, you know, the gringo you banged? I know we never talked, but do you want to meet?" Seriously, I couldn't believe these herbs had the nerve to ask me (Or on other occasions, ask my friend) to give them the girl I'm working ons number because I'm leaving next week. I see why girls look at gringos here as jokes. This place has been tapped out. I mean, if you come with some good game, it can be a gold mine, but a majority of these dudes out here are a straight fucking joke. I'm not saying that as a hater, but come on... You are really gonna try and leach off my girls and I don't even know you? None of these dudes I've had more than a 10 minute conversation with. Last week, I had a gringo come up, who I was conversing with through out the night, and say to the girl I was with, "Hey, we have free wine down the street, wanna come?" Right in front of me. You know what though, I don't even pay attention. THat night, the same guy tried talking my girl up, but I knew I had her, and I knew my game was on point. I knew none of these dudes were a threat. I let them talk, and try and play their herb ass, "Come hang out for free alcohol" game. I never interupted and I never paid attention, you know why? I knew I had it on lock! If you have that ill game and you know what's up, there's no reason to worry. She'll always stay with you no matter what. I was confident, and I knew this herb mother fucker had no chance. That right their will shine through over all these leach ass gringos. They have 0 game and brag about their pre pagos they pay $4o to come spend the night. Fuck the flaky girls, the most annoying thing in Colombia is the leach ass gringos who ruin it for everyone and make these girls flaky. I don't blame them one bit. BTW, one of these dudes is the same dude that owns a club in Barrio Colombia with the "No Gringo Rule (Though he's a gringo himself!)" He basically doesn't like gringos going to his club trying to pick up, which I assume is because he is intimidated. What a fucking HERB. Also, some of these dudes are thinking these girls are pre pagos, sorry, I don't roll like that homie!

RE: Review of Medellin, Colombia
Damn I just realize that post makes me sound like such a hater. But that's just how it's been, and regardless I'm still having a great time. I'm just rolling with the punches. To be honest, I'm loving it. I've been in some weird situations but I really feel like I'm making the very best of them. I actually like it here, and hope that post doesn't discourage anyone from coming here. I'm not saying it sucks here at all. You just have to separate yourself from the herbs and you'll be good. And yes, you do need some decent spanish to be successful here. My best advice: 1) Know conversational Spanish. 2) Dress nice, not like a good majority of the gringos here. 3) Try and act like you're interested about the culture and not just here to bang hookers. Just those 3 easy things will put you at a pretty decent advantage over most the gringos. Thing is, this place has so much potential, but it seems like gringos have tapped it out. I've had some great nights and met great women, but as someone stated above, it just sucks dealing with all the other gringo bullshit. Now I see what he means when he says he killed it (Not that I'm saying I killed it, but i had a good time and met a handful of good girls, much easier than Miami) and still doesn't like the place. You really have to experience it yourself. It's honestly not so hard to meet girls here, but all the bullshit that comes with it just isn't worth it. Do yourself a favor and go to Brazil...

RE: Review of Medellin, Colombia
I was gonna say, "sounds like they think you're hanging with hookers," but you hit it right at the end. Looks like you've landed at what I referred to as the "epicenter of the asshole earthquake" earlier.

I always cringe when approached by another gringo or europeo in Medellín. Almost all of them are exactly as you described. I can count on one finger the number of times I met a cool American that didn't come there with me--and that's having hung out there over several years. The level of obnoxiousness of some of those guys is stifling. I generally try to avoid eye contact with other gringos and if they roll over and try to start a convo, I'm usually pretty short with them. If I'm with a girl, I won't even bother at all. If I'm solo, I may entertain a few minutes of conversation and see if they are cool, but with that one exception, it has never been the case. Inevitably, their spanish is atrocious and I end up being a walking fucking Speak & Spell. And there's not much worse than translating some obnoxious shit I wouldn't dare say in the first place for some total fucking toolbox who's trying to pick up ass. Lame.

Keep the reports coming in IP! This is fun. Do you have friends in Guayaquil or are you rolling solo over there? Quito has some cool places, but there is no place in Ecuador even remotely as cool as Colombia. Have you considered going to Cali or Bogotá instead?

RE: Review of Medellin, Colombia
Damn bro, sounds like we have the same view of Medellin. I feel like you've been hangin' with me this whole time...

My thing is... I was planning on staying at least a couple months, but me and my girl got back together. I decided I wanted to work out our relationship, and if I stay in Medellin, I'll just get in trouble. If I planned on staying any longer, I would definitely find a place where I was living with Colombians. At this point, I'm not making much of an effort to meet anyone else as far as guy friends go. I have a week left here. The one Colombian I had contact with can't meet up til later this week, which I'm gonna meet up with him, but at this point it's too late to form any social circle.

I decided I'd meet up with one of my best friends who I haven't seen in almost 3 years. He's been living in Peru and has to leave the country to renew his visa. I told him to meet up with me in Guayaquil. From what some friend I've met here say, there's not much to see, so I'm gonna travel the coast of ecuador once I get into Guayaquil. From there I'll travel to Lima with the homie and see some sites and go home.

I wish I would have saved some time and money for Cali or Pereira, but unfortunately, I didn't. I hear good things about lots of other spots in Colombia. Guess, I'll check them out next time. I feel Medellin wasn't the spot to go to. Should have listened to my boy and checked out other spots first. But I'll be back some day. Thanks for the insight dude, +1!

Thanks, Man. I've enjoyed your posts. Makes me all nostalgic and brings back fond memories while sitting here in AFG. lol!

Save up some more vacation time and if you and your girl go separate ways again, I'll be going down for vacation in June/July. We could get an apartment in La Provenza and tear it down. Won't have to worry about any weird-o's fucking up our program.

Freddy,

I'm very fond of Medellín, in spite of some of its shortcomings. I have been looking for property there for a couple years and will probably retire there. The climate is perfect. I hate cold weather. Bogotá is really fun, but it has a climate similar to Seattle. It can get chilly and tends to rain a lot. Cartagena is fun, too, but in the summer, the heat can be unbearable and I'm not too keen on Costeños (the people that live there). They talk with such a heavy accent that they are very difficult to understand and get used to. I had a Panamanian girlfriend one time come to visit me there and when I picked her up at the airport I had to translate the taxi driver's spanish to her and she's a native speaker... So, I wouldn't recommend it for learning spanish.

You really can't go very wrong as long as you avoid the Costeños, in my experience. If I were going there to study, I would go to Medellín. After that, I would go to either Cali or Bogotá.
Also keep in mind you can get private tutoring really cheap, too, if you want to augment your studies. How long will you be there?

I'm getting to Colombia in May and looking at staying 6 months but I've been reading that if you enrol in a university course and get a student visa you can stay as long as the course goes for so that's another option as well as i may want stay longer than 6 months. I think I'd like to make Medellin my home base and then take small trips all around the rest of Colombia. I will def look into private tutors once I get there.

That sounds like an awesome plan. And it looks like you'll be there when I go back down for vacation. Maybe we can link up...

I wish I could help you with some info on the visa thingy, but I've never had to deal with it. If you run into any snags, hit me up and I can direct you to a lawyer in Medellín that deals with immigration/visa issues who works for a realty company. It's one of the "perks" for investing in property there. They'll set you up with dual passport or long-term visa after you've bought a home.

On a side note: anyone have any clue what the advantages would be in having a Colombian passport? Every Colombian I know has had major difficulties traveling abroad with that thing.

Maybe Volk will read this and weigh in on the subject.

RE: Review of Medellin, Colombia
IP, you should really be avoiding Parque LLeras or bounce quickly when you meet with your girls. There are too many good places in Medellin that don't have that concentration of no-game desperate gringos. I've been spending more time in Rio Sur lately and before that La Strada when it was more popular. Going to Deja Vu up the hill is fun on the weekends and they are better at face control there.

I've had better times bar hopping with my girl on 33 or 80. You can also hang out at Parque Envigado. It's a really laid back atmosphere there. One more thing, be a bit careful about going to Rio Negro with a couple of girls you met in Lleras. I'm sure your girls are good but you still need to be aware of your surroundings here. There was a band that would meet guys in Lleras, drug them (scoplamine), and steal from them. There were arrested but released.

Did you play poker in the Rio near San Diego? It's a 50 mil buy-in and the Colombians can't play worth shit.

InternationPlayboy, I totally agree with most of what you said about the gringos who come to Medellin in that post.

But the quoted portion is flat out incorrect.

Let's please just leave it at that on the internet, in the interest of our friendship, and talk about it more offline.

Quote:On a side note: anyone have any clue what the advantages would be in having a Colombian passport? Every Colombian I know has had major difficulties traveling abroad with that thing.

Maybe Volk will read this and weigh in on the subject.

Colombian passport? The only thing that would be worse is having an Afghan passport. You need a visa for almost every country in the world, including places like Serbia, Albania and, wait for it...El Salvador. Seriously, we need visa for a shithole like El Salvador. HOWEVER, and a big however, two of the few countries that don't ask us for visa is Russia and Singapore. The main reason I can't travel much is this passport.

One funny story : One time I lost a small bag in Prague with my passport and 10 euros. They gave back the passport but not the bag (it's old and stained) nor the euros.

About the poker, poker is not a big thing here. I don't have a clue about poker myself, and almost nobody really does. It's like blaming Canadians for having a bad soccer national team.

By the way IP, sorry I haven't been able to call you, I'm having medical problems lately. I hope it gets better soon so I can hit you up for a beer before you go to Ecuador.

Jaja... That's what I thought. My ex used to call it her "AIDS Passport."

We went to Paris one time and there was actually a separate line for Colombians. No one else. Just Colombians.

When I lived in Cartagena, I used to play poker 3 or 4 times/week. It was bad. I saw, on several occasions, locals going all-in with pair of deuces. I was floored every time. You could never know when someone was bluffing because they would go all-in on anything.

He's right, my bad. I got confused about who owned the club. The guy that owns the club actually seems like a cool dude. I thought it was another guy who owned it.

I know, I hate it. They play sloppy as shit and then when you go up against them with a solid hand they get lucky. They have 0 edicate as well.

Thanks for looking out. I'll try and check out some of those spots before I dip. One of the girls actually lives in Envigado. The casino I played at was Portofino in La Strada. It was only a 30k buy in plus unlimited rebuys. my room mate is trying to get me to play a game at I think the spot you are talking about. I can't remember the name, but it's the biggest casino in town right?

RE: Review of Medellin, Colombia
@WEDO, Many thanks, I wont actually be back till the end of the year or possibly beginning of next.. Good to get a few jars and exchange stories. e-arguments are very rarely reflective of personalities.

I am more then happy to concede that I may have been overaggressive in stating no foreigner cana go with a top tier girl. But you will have to be exceptional and on point in every way, Keyboard warriors living in their moms basement need not apply.

But, all things being equal, ther I have no doubt in my mind that majority of Paisa's would go for a local guy.

But it has to be said, you and Dulcecidoa are the exception. To the extreme. For better or worse, Colombia, and in particular Medellin attracts the worse sort of people. Most long-termers, particularly in poblado, are a bit loopy to say the least,.

@Dulceacido When I hear girls use the line the line “ Local guys are too machismo” it does bring a wry smile.

While I am sure there are exceptions, this is one of those things, which is a girls says and does another. The closest equivalent to the western girl transalation is “ I am done with bad boys.”

It’s complaining for the sake of complaining, most of them wouldn’t have it any other way. If you try and white knight them, they will trample all over you and within days, be back with the “machismo guy”

@internationalplayboy. Sounds like you had a blast , really enjoyed reading your field reports. Honest andd forthright.

It’s not hating if it’s the truth.. I didn’t want to say it because I have already painted a negative enough picture as it is.
But yeah, it’s all fun and games when you first come out since it’s “we’re in the same boat together”

You then quickly realise that they are spouting ill-informed rhetoric and it’s only by going out and burning yourself repeatedly you find the real deal.

I really wish I had this forum as a resource the first time \i came here.

But what’s worse is the bitch cockblocking moves. I have never seen it so bad from ttravellers as it is in Medellin..

These horn dogs are on a mission to get some paisa love, come hell or shine and if they ccant get any, you sure as hell aren’t
The second they’ve had a few rejection and seeing a brother doing well,. A bulb literally explode sand they start doing dumb and loud. Nevermond you spent half the evening schooling them.
The worst I got from locals is a quiet word in the ear that the girls is spoken for or at worse, gripping the girl and directing her away.

But thease, boys………………

Avoid like the plague. The only thing worse is the “lleras-expats”, but that’s another story entirely and can be summed up in one word

Bigbootyluvr

I am no gentleman

RE: Review of Medellin, Colombia
BTW, I hit up the metro cable Sunday with another forum member. We went on the less popular one because he had heard it had the better view, plus it's closer to where we're staying. The metro cable goes right over the populares (Colombias version of favelas). We're checking out the other, more popular one tomorrow, I'll let you guys know how it is. Here are some pics....

Wow. Didn't know you can't approach in malls in Colombia. I was gonna try it when I was in Cali. Someone on the forum said they approached in malls.

'My buddy said he saw her later that night and she was on his dick. '
Really? Shit Colombian girls like to play games.II really don't like that. How can you stand it.
